I know alot of metalheads especially the extreme guys who hate this genre, because they see it as these bands dumbing down metal to make it more mainstream accessible. Thoughts?

Groove metal is thrash slowed down with more emphasis on the beat, some of Metallica's earlier work such as For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Thing that Should Not Be and Leper Messiah could be considered groove. Two bands that perfected and could be considered the originators of the sound are Pantera and Prong.

@Jonesyntube That's wikipedia's definition but if you really listen to the music it's not necessarily slower but it uses dotted rhythms where as for the most part thrash just uses straight doubles. You're right some Metallica and Megadeth songs could be called groove but it has a lot to do with the time these things came out.

Groove metal's got to be the heaviest metal subgenre (along with doom). It's like pure heavy metal with crushing riffs yet so meaningful and melodic. Death metal may be heavy as fuck too, but groove bands have balls and tons of groove to their music.

Lamb of God is definitely groove metal IMO. Listen to their song structure, tempo, and feeling compared to other metalcore bands; there is a definite difference. Of course, pantera will always be the best groove metal band but I think LOG is a close second.
