I accidentally misspoke when I said "...never having really caught on with the public...". I should have added "outside of Norway" - it's always been popular in Norway - as it should be everywhere. This is a wonderfully moving piece with Grieg's genius in every detail, and this performance is magnificent.

Could you tell us who are the authors of the used paintings?

@tomaxuser - Adolph Tidemand (1814-1876) & Theodor Kittelsen (1857-1914), both from Norway.

Despite being only rarely performed and never having really caught on with the public, this remained a composition of which Grieg felt most proud. Percy Grainger called this his favorite Grieg work. (One of the biggest obstacles for Grieg's songs is that too few great singers knew - or know - Norwegian.)

Unfortunately, this has been called a folksong. It is not. It is a setting of fragments of a folk poem (a ballad collected by Landstad) to Grieg's original music. It describes a man's plight on being bewitched and enthralled by supernatural forest beings. Grieg wanted to expand this to a large-scale choral work but could never locate enough of the folk poem.
