  • Larry Jones is one of the few trainers who respects his horses and treat them right. He is a good man.

  • all of you who made negative comments:

that happens to be my grandfather your talking about. learn a thing or two about horseracing before you make ignorant statements.

    thanks.

  • I wonder if this man loved and cared for his charges so much why one ended up with two frount broken legs. An injury like the ones she suffered took time to get to the point were they would brake. Did the owner and trainer not notice what was happening? Over looking something like this caused a beautiful athletic to be destroyed. Shame on them for allowing her to run.

  • You make no sense! Put your money where your mouth is...start adopting ex race horses, like I do. Then you might know more about horses!

  • a human runner can break his legs by running in a race too. Larry Jones is one of the few trainers that I support. Eight Belles was perfectly sound before the race. Just like one misstep for a human can result in a torn ligament, the same goes for horses. It's not that hard to figure out, but I guess for your tiny brain it is.

  • *athletic

you and your statement is ignorant.

  • As far as Horse racing, I don't care for it. But I really like Larry Jones, he loves his horses and treats them really well. He cried yesterday when Eight Belles died, and had nothing but praise for her. You don't see that type of reaction with the horse owners. I am a Vet tech and own horses myself. The most delicate places on the horse is it's gut and it's legs! They did the right thing by putting her down, infection is a little different in horses vs other animals. -LVT

  • He can say that he loves his horses, but he puts them into races first and foremost to make money. I would think that their are better ways to show your love.

  • just shut up! they believed that Eight Belles deserved the chance to run for the roses, and she did! she proved the doubters wrong, that fillies can run with the boys! Eight Belles clearly loved running, its in her blood. Larry Jones obviously loved that filly, she was given a chance to run and she did. She kicked 18 colt's butts!

  • to the SNOBS who isolate themselves even from their own family when tragity strikes and ship them off for strangers to bear the brunt. it's called wound management, any moron could do it, you must have just over priced horse healthcare, where a little shot of Kevorkian is cheaper. i saw a woman running animal hospice type place where the dogs with paralized hind legs got up and running on a type of wheeled cart. Glad well dressed hicks wish to remain 'commonwealth' they're not fit for statehood

  • A barbaric sport that showed its compassion by killing a horse when it no longer could make the owner any money. This has to be stopped. Pushing these animals so hard is simply inhumane and all for a greedy bunch of bastards. Screw you all!

  • Couldn't make the owner money? What are you, retarded? She broke both front ankles, and broke the skin, meaning infection. Even if, somehow, they couldn't saved her, she would've lived her life in excrutiating pain. Is that how you view "humane" treatment?

These horses love to run, whether you like it or not. If they don't want to, they don't have to. Ever heard of Zippy Chippy? He stopped in the MIDDLE of races. No horse HAS to run.

Rest in piece Eight Belles. Only the best die young.

  • Believe what you want. Horses don't run full speed on dirt in the wild for the length of the race. Same for greyhound racing. It is unhealthy for them to run full speed like that and it's just one step above pit bull fighting for $ or cock fighting. sick.

  • You're 100% right. I guess these people can actually talk to the horses and ask whether or not they want to run. I'm sure it has nothing to do with getting hit with a stick if you don't run. This joker actually said that the horse was glad to put her life on the line for him. I'm sure the horse told him this firsthand.

  • You are right. See, as people age, some of them acquire more insight. Call it wisdom if you want. Some, however, just prefer to make excuses and justifications for their actions until they eventually believe it themselves. This is one of the mechanisms for eliminating the guilt that SHOULD be associated with this "gentlemans" sport. "My horse was glad to run too hard and lose her life to try earning the owner countless riches so they could continue their excesses!"

  • Sorry..but you are wrong! I have 22 Thoroughbreds...they race each other out in the pastures...(no human involved)..it's what they do best..RUN FAST! SO your point is pointless!!

  • BarnBrain,

Then why do they put jockeys on them and have them whip their asses while they run, yelling into their ears to run faster? hmmm?

  • I make more money than you do...that's my point!! :-)

  • your ignorant

  • Such a tragedy :(

  • Good to see Larry Jones in the Derby again. Likeable guy with a great sense of humor. Hard Spun was great last year. I'm not too convinced this filly can become a Derby winner though.
