Landry: best ever? Nope. Top 5 certainly, but he didn't win NFL titles in half the years he coached like Lombardi did. I would imagine they'd be coaching a heck of a game in Heaven, though. Good man. Great man. Heck of an all-time roster. But God's team? The Cowboys don't even play on God's grass!
Id say he was the best coach ever. He lost Super Bowls by a total of 11 points. He still holds the record for most postseason wins as well as the record for 20 straight winning seasons.
He drew up the 4-3 defense, still a standard in the NFL 50 years later. Created the multiple offense. Created the offense of the 21st century back in the mid-70s with the shotgun formation's mainstream use. Landry's innovations shaped the NFL today. What other coach can say that?
@marquette When Landry and Lombardi parted ways from the NY Giants...Lombardi kept using Landry's 4-3 Defense. andry scrapped Lombardi's offense and created his own& it took him to Legendary heights.He built a dynasty.He became an icon.And He made the Dallas Cowboys into the most recognized and succesful teams in pro sports history.
Take away the first few predictable losing seasons as an expansion team, as well as his last couple in the late 80's.. you have an unmatched coaching record.
@playmayker88 I will never rip Landry. Fantastic coach, and even better man. But Lombardi took an expansion-quality team and made it a champion in 3 years, won 5 in 7 years, and 3 in a row, along with a 90% postseason win percentage. THOSE are all unequaled coaching accomplishments. Landry was probably the best innovator ever, but Lombardi was an even better motivator. Cowboys have 8 titles to catch up to the 13 Packers' titles, making THEM the most successful in NFL history, not Dallas.
@marquettefootball (pt1) I can respect what youre saying. Just that the way I see it, and yes Im a Dallas fan so I'll concede some bias, but I think I have a strong case. Being a motivator is one thing, but to devise intricate schemes on both def and off that become mainstays and shape the league for years to come is another. Lombardi won with Landry's design. And 2 plays in 2 years from the 1 yard line with seconds to go vs. the Pack, could have gone either way for a world title. (contd)
@marquettefootball (pt2) The close losses to Lombardi in the late 60's wasnt a matter of being out-coached. In fact, Lombardi had the surperior talent vs a Landry team just getting off the ground and had just begun winning, and it was still anyone's game. Titles mean a lot, I know. But when u see such consistency over time, along with innovations and taking 2 entirely different teams into 2 diff super bowls in the 70's, then another diff cast in the 80's to 3 chmp games..(contd)
@marquettefoo(pt3) even the 85 team that won a div title which was made up of low quality guys overall. Everyone has their own opinion bout the greatest coach i guess. I just think Landry is underrated and under celebrated as 1 of the greats.We always see the images of Lombardi&Walsh but I can count on 1 hand maybe 1 finger how many times an NFL intro was shown with the Landry image.I just think he doesnt get his historical limelight like the others. Probly how he would have wanted it tho right?
@playmayker88 We're both admittedly biased. :) Lots of NFL films have Ice Bowl Cowboys saying their team had more talent, and Landry's quoted as saying that Lombardi's coaching was what developed what it took to beat Dallas. I'll argue Lombardi as #1, but when it comes to putting Landry on the NFL coaching Mount Rushmore, I'll join you the lobbying effort. I'd stick those two with George Halas, Paul Brown and Bill Walsh.
Well said. They dont make em like Vice and Tom anymore. Didnt the Giants have a Dream staff with Lombardi as OC and Landry as DC? Nobody at that time realized the greatness on one sideline, but looking back at it now... wow!
@marquettefootball From stories I've read, their head coach Jim Lee Howell did realize it, because he could be spotted reading the paper while Lombardi and Landry were devising game plans.
While we should always pay respects to the man in the hat...you definitely should not pay any sort of homage to TO. He was not a Dallas Cowboy. He was Jerry Jones wet dream that was a nightmare. I wouldn't want that guy anywhere near the star now that he is long gone.
1960-1990 was the best team in nfl history!...coach landry and the boys!...after that, um, well, hardly legends...but tom, you will always be the best ever and so were the REAL cowboys that YOU coached...
@Hunterbourne14 That's a compliment.

Awesome! Do another one and mix in some pictures of the American flag, Roger Staubach, John Wayne, Troy Aikman, etc.
