Hermon Wouk ,sure, did it with precise measurements, that can't be simplified by any other accounts, love it and hate it at the same time , because it did happen this way. The only 2 actors I thought were somewhat questionable in the casting were of Ralph Bellamy playing FDR, becasue Bellamy was actually almost a full TWENTY yers older than FDR was. FDR was 57-63 during WW 2 and Bellamy wa in his late-70's. Also thought Berkoff wasn't a good Hitler, especially the way he spoke and would drag out his sentences. The other actors fit their parts well.

@RJY4356 Would agree with your cast comments there, Stephen Berkoff was a very poor Hitler especially in comparison to Bruno Ganz in Downfall. Ralph Bellemy was ok but as you say too old, as sadly was Robert Mitchum, Pug Henry was early 50s in the books Mitchum was early 70s here and looked older, no surprise considering the life he led. Still a good series though and without doubt the best ever theme tune.

While I thought this series was ok, I was never a huge lover of it. My brother thought I really liked it and gave Winds of War to me for Christmas, and then War and Remembrance as a birthday gift. I have both on DVD. Very expensive gift, never had the heart to tell him that I never really wanted them.

This epic miniseries is an all-star extravaganza, spectacularly produced by Dan Curtis. If you want to feel as if you've personally experienced World War 2 this movie is as close as it gets to the REAL thing. It captures its audience in the 1st 2 minutes of "The Winds of War" and doesn't let go throughout the duration of "War and Remembrance." Herman Wouk was an American Naval Officer in World War 2, so he knew the war 1st-hand and put it in his classic novels. I recommend watching it.

This miniseries isn't perfect. Some parts are miscast.  The back story is overly melodramatic and detracts from the historical re-creations. After later films like "Schindler's List", War and Remembrance's treatment of the Holocaust seems simplistic. Nevertheless, this is an important historic work - the first time the Holocaust was depicted in detail on American television. The musical score remains one of the most moving ever written. For these reasons, this series should not be missed

The novels these shows are based on are incredibly powerfull.Herman Wouk has become one of my favorite authors. He also wrote a similar set of books based on the foundation of Israel. None of these characters are in it.

His strong Zionism shows through in this series.

They said the book was just too big to be made into a miniseries, but they did it, and did it amazingly well. The casting was perfect, whereas the casting of "Winds of War" had some flaws. Jane Seymour's performance was masterly, the Auschwitz scenes graphic and harrowing, and the final scene pierces the heart. I need to get this on DVD someday.

I have both the winds of war and War and Remembrance and they are the best mini series to be television and miniseries like Lonesome Dove, and Roots are excellent also. TV has become almost unwatchable the only show that I like that is on TV today is Lost.

I am unsure of your specific region codes, but if you have netflix, I can tell you that the series is out there. I just finished watching it from the winds of war to war and remembrance. I think the US may be reg 1, but alas I am not fully sure. Hope this helps!

Winds of war is the preceeding TV show to war and remembrance. In Winds of War they told how WWII started, and the show goes to the middle of 1941, while War and Remembrance goes

from the middle of 1941 to the end of Hitler in 1945.

I agree with everyone, as this was a great, great series. I was a kid when my father watched it and all I remembered was this epic and powerful ballad. Many years later, I wanted to find the movie to watch,and thanks to wonderful people like yourself who had a fondness for this series, all I had to do was hum a few bars and voila, got the title. WAW is definately the best WW2 doc ever made, or will ever be made. And definately one of the top 5 documentaries ever. I think it's the best but others can be argued equally. Ken Burns' Civil War also comes to mind.

There are only two opening themes that can give me chills and bring me to tears - this one and the theme from North and South (you can find it on YouTube). This music was written by Bob Cobert who also wrote the music for the 60's series "Dark Shadows" (which was another Dan Curtis production).

This mini-series, along with "Schindler's List", should be compulsory learning in schools so that no one remains ignorant of the Holocaust.

I was 14 and a half years old and racked with the most excruciating tooth pain ever, in fact at 29 years nothing has come close including breakages migraines and food poisoning, anyway there I was with my mouth soaked in clothe oil at about midnight when I discovered this program on bbc 2 1994, and was gripped, I now only have to smell clothe oil and it feels like I am caught up in the greatest human tragedy ever.

You can easily set it on DVD from ebay or amazon. As of now, each of the trilogy (Winds of War, W&R I and W&R II) will cost you about $60, though if you watch ebay closely, you can get a better deal. I have all three DVD sets. This was my favorite TV or movie piece of all time and to me that $200 or so is cheap to have this classic.
