yes. I went natural after I had my baby. I said the same thing "I'M TIRED." And you know what? My hair is growing! I also diet and started working out because I'm not happy with my body and the only person who can change it is me. I am so happy you are not a part of the mental slavery...you're so beautiful too.

I think women know when they're not attractive or pleasant looking. Some just don't want to admit it or change things. They would rather go around feeling badly about themselves than trying different looks to find out what best suits them. There are so many differetly styles, but not a lot of bw want to venture away from "the ideal" magazine cover girl look, and that often times doesn't work for them at all. However, I think your style works for you very well.

growing up as young black girl its easy to adopt hollywood's ideals of black beauty because they (and the media) have controlled our image for so long. I'm glad we agree, more or less. Understand the reason I stopped listening is because all these self-loathing-to self-realization stories are numerous as much as they have been publicized. (Yours being no less uniqely special to yourself.) I just wanted to add a deeper insight to this other than just "learning to love oneself". For many women, would you believe, even this is not enough.
I appreciate the extra insight. But why is another account of self-loathing to self-love a bad thing? Maybe it's tedious to you to listen to, but the point is that a negative became positive, and it seems a little condescending to deride that message. "Learning to love oneself" isn't enough, I agree, but it's a good first step. If we can get more women to this point, THEN we can worry about the next steps.

Oh dats what's up. Fellow Brooklynite. when it comes to the whole Big Girl issue. Yeah there r pretty much a lot of girls who are pretty heavy, but that's an issue of acceptance, I guess. Not saying that being heavy should be accepted, but it's a matter that won't be fixed over night.

Also most overweight people eat poorly bc they are poor, those people can't afford fresh produce( it's expensive). Plus in poor neighborhoods..what do you see, establishments like KFC, Arby's etc. Most poor people do not have access to the gym. All you see is ABC store, fast food places. But like in my neighborhood, there is a 24hr gym, nice hospitals, doc office, dentist, plastic surgeons, neurologist. Nice eating etsb. nice super markets, golf course.
There is a Powerhouse the original at eason and woodward three blocks south off six mile and a brand new ymca downtown near broadway and woodward. There are bally's and ther is the great outdoors. Try pushup, situps, jogging or walking the dog. That's free.
Fresh produce is expensive? Ummmm....I was watching a documentary on obesity, and they were showing this black family of 7. When it came time for them to eat dinner, everyone got in the car, drove to wendy's, and got a meal (oh and of course they all supersized it). Now let's break the prices down...7 people...on average a meal at wendy's is about 5 dollars...that's a total of $35 a day...and they did this about 5 days out of the week...comes up to about $175 a week...$700 a month...
Let's not forget that they have to eat breakfast and lunch, they can either choose to go to fast food places for those meals too or sometimes make them, but I'm not even going to go into the math with those options...so you mean to tell me that they cannot take the $700 a month and spend it on healthy options...excuses...excuses...brown rice, fish, chicken, broccoli, whole wheat, apples, what is so expensive about that. I mean damn, I've always heard eating out as expesinve, but eating in?
Oh and then there's the whole I dont have time to cook excuse...ummm...let's see...you get in your car, drive to a fast food place...wait in line because there's a million car there...order your food...wait another 10-15 minutes because they have to make your meal and everyone else's which includes your heart attack with a side of hypertension...oh and make sure it is supersize...and dont forget the diet diabetes...
you finally get it, then you have to drive back home, add the commute to and from the fast foold place, traffic, and traffic lights...and you pretty much wasted 30 minutes that you could have used to cook a decent healthy meal...
I said readi it again...poor people don't (most) have the transportation to get to markets like Kroger, F.Lion etc. They buy canned foods over fresh bc its's cheaper. Poor people do have a limit monetary wise. Eating badly=bad health, having medicaid is not accepted by most Docs bc it take long for the Doc to get their payment. I said all of this in my other comments, this makes 2 times
Only in America, can you be poor and overweight, in other countries if you are poor, you are malnourish, so I dont accept excuses...Americans dont know how good they have but they find a reason to bitch about everything. Dont buy canned food because its overprocess, but frozen vegetables are a better option, you have to make due with what you have and trust someone can make due with $700, just for food, a month.

Oh I knoW americans are greedy, lol I was abt to mention the econ crisis. Even though these lenders let Americans get loans they couldn't afford. Lots of foreclosures, nice houses too. My mom sells real Estate, and I've been in a few houses that were put on the auction block.
My mom and bf are both in real estate and man the market is horrible, luckily my mom made great decisions, so she's not so bad off. But if you have money it's one of the best times to dabble. If I have time this summer I will be taking the class.
I lived in the country for a little bit, and we had a huge garden, so many vegetables, we shared with the neighbors. idk we have to watch what we eat bc so many things are in food now. I found there was mercury in Coke zero.
My neighborhood is a lot like yours, but there are fast food places all over, the only different is they are cleaner, nicer, and with better service. If you live in any major city there will always be fast food joints all over the place.
If I'm not mistaken the last time I checked it was Miami, and I live in Miami, well Ft, Lauderdale to be more precise, so like I said just because you live in a major city doesnt mean that there arent supermarkets or other places besides fast food joints to eat, people just have to make healthier decisions.
In this other city that like 10 min from me, all you see is fish fry seafood places, ABC stores, check cashing places vs. the nice neighborhoods..nice hospitals, golf course, plastic surgeon, 24hr gyms, parks. I wasn't saying major cities like nyc. I'm talking in certain areas of the state, urban areas..seems like most of those areas have poor quality places.
I understand what you are saying, but I was trying to get you to see that eating out is more expensive than eating in. I know urban areas have crappy food. But that doesnt mean that there are not healthier choices, people have to decide to be healthy and stick to it, there are options, one is never without any options.
And you know the funny thing about is, while taking a class on nutrition, I learned that one of the reasons west indians, even while being poor, get their vitamins and nutrition comes from the fact that they eat a lot of rice and beans, and with rice and beans you pretty much get everything you need, so again that's a healthier and cheaper alternative to the fast food which I call death.
Among other things, they live longer because they eat healthier, less meat, more rice, vegetables, etc. same thing with west indians. Being west indian, I was astonish at the fact that American's main dish were always meat orient, vs. being a side dish. In my household meat have always been a side dish.

As a BM who has been intrigued by the Gender conflicts in the black community, I've viewed hundreds of videos (made by both men and women) about issued they felt continue to poison the black community. There are black women who have natural wavy/curly long hair. I am one. If I choose to wear a weave or perm my hair that's my personal preference. Like India Arie said, "I do whatever feels good to my soul". Many black women starting straightening their hair long ago with pressing and heat to make their easier to manage. It had nothing to do with how it looked, but it hurt their head when they combed it. I know just as many white women who wear weaves. They just don't broadcast it. God help us.

It had nothing to do with how natural hair looked? Seriously? The whole point of pressing combs, relaxers, ect. was that our hair was BAD, unmanageble, and not attractive. I can understand that you may choose to do what you want with your hair but you can't change history to make your point.
I worked in a salon for 3 years and half my bosses weave clients were white. I know all about it. You have wavy/curly hair? Great! I'm sure it's beautiful just the way it grows out of your scalp. You wanna relax it? Do you. But many black women don't know HOW to care for their natural hair because they've grown up believing it to be "unmanageable". If you can't take care of it like a white woman can, then it needs to be altered. There's something inherently wrong with that.
Why would she criticize a problem that she "did" have? wouldn't that make her a hypocrite? We should learn to seperate the two, criticism and truth have different meanings. She's telling the truth in this case. That's our problem, when someone is explaining what needs to be done by way of helping you it's not accepted.

I think women know when they're not attractive or pleasant looking. Some just don't want to admit it or change things. They would rather go around feeling badly about themselves than trying different looks to find out what best suits them. There are so many differetly styles, but not a lot of bw want to venture away from "the ideal" magazine cover girl look, and that often times doesn't work for them at all. However, I think your style works for you very well.

And unless we (young black girls) get constant reaffirmation to counteract the lies they feed us, then this is what happens. Also most overweight people eat poorly bc they are poor, those people can't afford fresh produce( it's expensive). Plus in poor neighborhoods..what do you see, establishments like KFC, Arby's etc. Most poor people do not have access to the gym. All you see is ABC store, fast food places. But like in my neighborhood, there is a 24hr gym, nice hospitals, doc office, dentist, plastic surgeons, neurologist. Nice eating etsb. nice super markets, golf course.

Fresh produce is expensive? Ummmm....I was watching a documentary on obesity, and they were showing this black family of 7. When it came time for them to eat dinner, everyone got in the car, drove to wendy's, and got a meal (oh and of course they all supersized it). Now let's break the prices down...7 people...on average a meal at wendy's is about 5 dollars...that's a total of $35 a day...and they did this about 5 days out of the week...comes up to about $175 a week...$700 a month...

And you know the funny thing about is, while taking a class on nutrition, I learned that one of the reasons west indians, even while being poor, get their vitamins and nutrition comes from the fact that they eat a lot of rice and beans, and with rice and beans you pretty much get everything you need, so again that's a healthier and cheaper alternative to the fast food which I call death.

LOL...I had a horrible experience once in a restaurant with chicken, and I sweared on my life that I would never eat it again. Even the thought of it makes me want to vomit.

I've had it, it's really good...well atleast in my opinion. I was first introduce to veggie burgers by a friend of mine while in high school and it was so good, I couldnt turn back.

i hate those, lol. i only eat those black bean burgers, they taste more like real meat. there's another brand that has tofu bacon, bologna, etc. it tastes exactlylike the real thing. forget the name.

lol @ ketchup. i think it depends on the brand. the brand i get is from whole foods, i think its 'deli' something, i forget. But i got the Boca brand it does taste different. maybe b/c its mostly veggie and not been or tofu protein. but i prefer i guess, the tofu and mushroom burgers, its all in what u like.

Yes, it does... Ok, girl, I need to just say. that this was a damn good video. I couln't of said it better myself. We control our lives and we do need to stop giving a rat's ass about what others think. If we do that then it'd be a better world. For everyone. Not so hard so much more peace and tranquility. sigh morenabella13 .....another elder black person who deflects what someone says because they are younger than you. Understand that age doesn't always equate to wisdom..believe that. There are old fools everywhere who have learned nothing from life(not meaning you). Besides....the age group that SWP's videos are mostly geared to probably doesn't apply to you anyway. A lot of the issues he talks about aren't in the older black population so I wouldn't expect you to see what he's saying.

lol...well, i dont consider myself and elder just yet, being that im only 36 years old. but i do have a few years on SWP, & his immaturity shows to anyone who can see. SWP is not only at a disadvantage age wise, but also maturity/experience-wise. (in reference to his being able to exercise emotional maturity). He hasnt lived long enough to know the nuances of the things he discusses. his world view is VERY SMALL. You can speak your truth...but HOW you speak it shows more than what you say.

As a BM who has been intrigued by the Gender conflicts in the black community, I've viewed hundreds of videos (made by both men and women) about issued they felt continue to poison the black community. One of the top ten I've heard is weave. Weave is a badge of insecurity and discontent with yourself. Be proud of your natural features and natural hair. Great vid and keep up the good work.

Why would a WW be upset about BLACK men putting Latinas in rap videos when 99% of rappers are BLACK MEN- not WHITE MEN! There are black women who have natural wavy/curly long hair. I am one. If I choose to wear a weave or perm my hair that's my personal preference. Like India Arie said, "I do whatever feels good to my soul". Many black women starting straightening their hair long ago with pressing and heat to make their easier to manage. It had nothing to do with how it looked, but it hurt their head when they combed it. I know just as many white women who wear weaves. They just don't broadcast it. God help us.

It had nothing to do with how natural hair looked? Seriously? The whole point of pressing combs, relaxers, ect. was that our hair was BAD, unmanageble, and not attractive. I can understand that you may choose to do what you want with your hair but you can't change history to make your point.

I worked in a salon for 3 years and half my bosses weave clients were white. I know all about it. You have wavy/curly hair? Great! I'm sure it's beautiful just the way it grows out of your scalp. You wanna relax it? Do you. But many black women don't know HOW to care for their natural hair because they've grown up believing it to be "unmanageable". If you can't take care of it like a white woman can, then it needs to be altered. There's something inherently wrong with that.

Why would she criticize a problem that she "did" have? wouldn't that make her a hypocrite? We should learn to seperate the two, criticism and truth have different meanings. She's telling the truth in this case. That's our problem, when someone is explaining what needs to be done by way of helping you it's not accepted.
