If people don't believe this type of thing is possible, then they are ignorant. Read up on some of the creepy and absolutely atrocious things that have happened on this planet in the past, and think just for one second how possible it would be for something like this to happen. Quit just assuming people are paranoid and take a moment to consider the possibility. I assure you we've all taken the time to think about the possibility of the world being a perfectly safe and happy place full of love..
And look how Google also managed to split people into 2 factions.I have nothing against Google, BUT...what and how they save on their servers..stuff that almost never gets deleted (hopefully unless you cancel your account) is really creepy. I mean, just add your contacts to Google (because it's so easy to recover and so handy)..and then whenever you delete all your contacts, you can easily get them back, since they are stored for 30 days on the server. Emails, autosave, search autosave...hmmm
I think most people are really missing the point. It's not about what Google, or Facebook, or MySpace, etc, are doing with your information as they receive it, or about your boss intercepting an e-mail of you talking dirty to his wife, it's about the potential of what could be done with all this stored information in the future. As human beings, we have a funny way of waiting until the levee actually breaks and then realizing it's too late to do anything about it.
@YukonTrooper exactly...it only takes a law or Google taken over by someone with hidden intentions (if not already done) and it's all theirs: your contacts, your emails, your photo albums, your search history, your calendar, even your exact location. How handy that it's all there in one place. So, like you say, nothing to do with Google, only with the potential future implications of having such neat features.
this is lame. you talk like you think, google was one person who likes to read your email, and will spread gossips about you. This is just a big database, where ads are associated to words automatically, nobody gives a damn about your secrets. If you can't see this, you should not go near computers :/
@jaysicks Is not like they will spread gossip about you, but the system they could compromise your data in a private network, this means if you use chrome and google, you could very well fucked up by your system administrator if you have anyyhing private to protect, plus google have been already hacked by chinese, we should be aware of how much information google is obtaining from us and how they use it for comercial benefits.
Every mail system can be compromised and every email provider has the ability toi record your data. Seriously man, I trust google over any other provider out there. You think Microsoft and yahoo aren't tracking your data as well? And my previous argument about the ssl was a response to the video saying that ANYONE can sniff your traffic, this is not true with SSL, then only google can see your data, but hello, they kind of have to see your message to be able to send it.
@sunthief79 Not true they don't need to read the message in order to send it, they don't need to, but you won't understand at all what's going on and how this affects your privacy in many ways or mine. @ for msoft, use the tool on hotmail, you'll see a huge difference between one and another.
@Dimitriox About the sysadmins, how other browsers protect against ajax features? And I think it is the same with other sites, that use ajax. (plus I don't think, that I ever search something inappropriate on my workplace, where sysadmins on the watch.
@Dimitriox About google storing my information, my opinion is, that I doubt they store so much raw data. So they don't see that "xyuser" searched "privacy" on 20th April 2009... but they see that privacy has been searched by 98765432 people in 2009.
If my english knowledge is correct, than it is called aggregation.
@Dimitriox Well of course, they CAN see one particular data, if they really want, but I really really doubt that they'd do it. One, I'm sure that they have strict rules, who can access what kind of data inside they workers. Two, it simply not worth it. They benefit from aggregated data, not from individual. So I'm not sure they would keep source data after they went to the datawarehouses.
If you are that concerned about your privacy, you should not use any email service in that way. You have to learn a encryption program (like gnupgp), encrypt your message and then send it by email or post it in a web page, because the only person with the right key is the one that will be able to read it. In general, is there any difference if your email get read by a program (like spam filters of adsense) from a privacy point of view? I don't think so, as long no human is the middle of it.
@hellothere7654 - No, you can use one you pay for. (Read the rest of the message.) I have an email service that I pay for *and* I have my own domain which delivers my mail to an email client on my desktop.
My emphasis on commercial was because I don't understand why so many people think that things like Gmail are free. They aren't. They are ad supported. You have to give something up to get something.
These issues are easily fixed by using a POP client to connect to GMail. No adverting in Outlook or Thunderbird last time I checked. You can't really complain when you have options!
Point 1: Sending anything over the internet not encrypted is easily exposed to people seeing what you are doing.
Point 2: Saying they are doing something at work they shouldnt be is obviously wrong.
Point 3: Google offers SSL that you pay for, if you are worried about it. PAY FOR IT. THis is a free service.
Point 4: Googles Chrome is beta, its not full production. Therefore some things will be overlooked. Using it as a fully functioning browser is retarded.
Point 5: Everyone knows any online service has rights to everything you have in your email. Even hotmail and yahoo mail do this.
Point 6: Googles advertising is not as distracting or annoying as other sites. But it is very good at engineering what you type. Surprise, So do the other search engines. How do you think they make money?
point 7: Auto saving of emails should be an option, but really anything you do on the internet can be found out /hacked Use it with this in mind.
@cheekieweekie it doesnt have to be. we just need to work to enact policies and technology that serves OUR interests rather than those of corporatations or govt
Also you can turn off the optional text adds in gmail, where is that feature on every other free webmail company out there??? Can someone say agenda??? Wonder if this guy works for hotmail...... I'm starting to think non-profit, mean private contributions..... Do a little more research before you slander companies!
And Chrome is still BETA!!!! Get over yourself. Of course Google wants to make money with advertising, what other company doesn't do this, at least they aren't freaking annoying flashing ads. Also Hotmail sends out spamming signatures to the bottom all your emails now. Your argument is so flawed I'm so annoyed that other stupid people are going to be convinced by this bullshit.
This is such a load of shit. If you want gmail to default to SSL then just set it up int he settings. ALL email is sent insecurely! If your browser crashes and you move computers you will still have your autosaved draft. That's the Whole fucking point you idiot. If you are so worried about your "network admin" looking at your emails, then set it to be ssl by default. You are fucking idiot and spreading bullshit propaganda.
@sunthief79 if doesn't matter if you have SSL activacted as keystrokes goes to google, this is not propagand this a fact, if you don't have anything constructive, do us a favor and go fuck yourself.
@sunthief79 YOU missed the point. While its nice to have such google "features", many people do not understand the corresponding loss of privacy or what the company's real intentions are. Regarding SSL: Google has had this SSL functionality for ages, SO WHY DON'T THEY HAVE IT ON BY DEFAULT.? The user shouldn't have to manually "turn it on"! Its comments like yours that will cause us to lose what little rights and privacy we have left if we don't watch out for stuff like this!
Companies do not use SSL by default because it causes a lot of problems for people. Sometimes corp environments do not have the ports open except for 80. If I was designing the system I would also NOT have SSL on by default. Every other online mail system also does not have SSL on by default. If u look, hotmail only has SSL when you send your password on the login screen. So again, why is GMAIL picked on. If you are concerned about Privacy, stay off the Internet!
@charterviewer 9/11 happened because the United States is always fucking with people that in first case never did anything against them. Now use your brain and ask yourself what the fuck is the united states doing in the middle east and why they were there in first place the first time, why in the fucked world they would mess other lives, and lets not talk bullshit, our goverment killed americans in our soil in the massacred of reno.
The funniest part is that Google's ad relevance is virtually nil. Let's say I write an e-mail that says "Stop Coal Now." Know what I get? An ad for "clean coal," the antithesis of what I'm writing about. As long as the algorithms are THAT inept, I'm not losing sleep.
Every byte you send over the intertubes is read by THE GOVERNMENT.
You have NO expectation of privacy in the U.S. The right-wing killed the 4th Amendment. And THEY can put you in prison, not just give you an ad.
1) Gmail is free, not hosted on on any private network and therefore the expectation of privacy is zero. Other than the lack of SSL (which is not the case) you can't expect privacy on a public domain. Security, yes, privacy, no. 2)Most companies don't permit the use of private email accounts on company time or network. If you do so, you're asking for it.
Of course data is stored on Google's servers. It's called webmail for one. The emails aren't downloaded to your computer. That's why you can read emails from any computer. The emails are STORED ON THE SERVER. Who cares. I trust Google. I don't trust Consumer Watchdog. Besides, how else is autosave supposed to work? Save emails on your computer? If they did that, you'd complain that Google is taking up your HD space with you knowing. Just shut up.
For starters, the use of the word "read" throughout the video is misleading (unless you believe there are actually people reading gigabytes of e-mail). "Processes" would be much more accurate (and wouldn't scare people as much).
"But Google opens every e-mail Alice sends him and uses it to decide what ads to show Bob"
Not quite; Google only shows ads relevant to the text displayed on the screen (i.e. it doesn't "pre-open & read them", it only processes what's visible at the time).
I knew all of this when I signed up for Gmail a long time ago. Of course all info is sent and stored on Google, this is how all Google products works. The info about the ads in Gmail was discussed a couple of years ago. This is not new info here. If you want real security info, see Steve Gibson and his and Leo Laports Security Now podcast.

Alice doesnt want anyone to know what she is saying except for Bob.
Did Alice send it from a work computer?
Did Alice shred (not delete) her written msg on her machine?
Would Alice have told Bob what she wrote in her msg if they were in a cafe?
Does Alice give out her name & adress to reserve something at a store?
Oh and sending a private mail to your bosses wife! How do you know she isnt getting up and leaving her system on? Go get some common sense!
