  • im guessing this is the choppy idle? i want to get this cam for my 72 GMC truck and didn't know if it is the rough idle or choppy idle that sounds better.

  • @jeremy63able Yes this is the choppy idle.

  • what kind of exhaust setup are you running?

  • i just bought the whole kit and everything with the timing chain set and all, will my new 5.7L 350 from ATK Engines sound like this even though the exhaust stops underneath the car halfway? its a big exhaust too, 3in. . I'm worried though ill have to get a smaller exhaust and that'll be even more money out of my wallet :/

  • @denisaaj It should sound close. What compression is your new engine? When I had this set up I was around 9.5:1. The thumpr cams like compression so I would say if your engine has at least 9.0:1 you should be fine. I would agree that your exhaust is too big. You need to step down to a 2 1/2" exhaust which will give you more back pressure. Oh and if your cam is a flat tappet be sure to use BREAK IN OIL not regular oil.

  • Can I install just this cam? Or do I NEED other parts as well? I have a 88 c 1500 5.7 with a 4 barrel 600 carb headers and intakemanifold. Someone please get back with me on this ! ! !

  • @thatguy3139 Yes you will need more than just this cam. Stock springs won't work. Part # 981-16 from comp are the valve springs you need. Also change your pushrods to comps part # 7372. Or you can buy the cam kit with all of this stuff plus a timing chain set. Thats the cheaper way to go and you are guaranteed to have the right stuff. Also it is mandatory to use BREAK IN OIL on flat tappet cams. Don't use regular oil you will regret it.

  • @thatguy3139 im buying the 279 thumpr cam for my old 350. after talking with several knowledgeable builders, you can use stock pushrods, #7372 are 7.800", same as stock pushrods. and if you absolutely had to you could probably get away with stock valve springs, but you will have valve float up top. basic terms it would run, but you will lose power in upper rpms cuz your valves will float. best bet to just buy the 981-16 springs from comp for $65 and put them in.

  • @old70chevy Your right the 7372 pushrods are the same as stock but they are made of better material and would hold up better to higher rpms. I wouldn't trust stock springs at all cause if you float the valves it would cause serious engine damage.

  • Comment removed

  • @cdrummer316 yea theres no way id use stock springs, i was just telling the guy who asked if he NEEDED the parts, it would be dumb not to, its $65, keeps you from headaches later.

  • hey man sounds so sick. just wondering how much HP to the rears? and how much would you say cost you to build this motor just an estimate. thanks man ;)

  • @Bishn0zle Don't know never had it ran on a dyno. My guess is around 300hp. As far as cost it depends on how you build it. If you cut corners on the bottom end like cast pistons, stock crank & rods then probably around $2000-2500. If you spend a little extra on pistons and get forged with some I beam rods from eagle and an eagle cast crank rated at 500hp then I would say around $3500. Also depends on what brand heads you buy. You can save alot or money by sticking with flat tappet cam

  • @cdrummer316 oh cool as man. did you build it yourself? i love these cams man

  • Do you haul with it

  • @Thecarguy24 No. This cam wouldn't be good for that.

  • damn thats a clean truck, nice work!

  • Using flowmaster 40's?

My truck sounds identical, but I have a smaller cam because I didn't want to have to buy a stall converter. Which sucks because I have one now.

  • im buyin the same, but its goin in a 312 (305 bored .040 over) im hoping mines gonna sounds as good as that. i love it

  • Hi

What Thumpr Cam is it, exactly? Is this the 299THR7?

    Thanks

    Cory

  • @montecarlo409 279TH7.

  • Beautiful truck man, nice job!!!!!

  • @cdrummer316 what mufflers are you running?

  • i love the truck man great job its beautiful but its too quiet. maybe it was just the video.

  • im not much of a chevy fan but man that is a sweet ride.

  • im not much of a chevy fan but man that is a sweet ride.

  • I have a old school 63 impala. I currently have a short water pump. The options on a long water pump must have slipped my mind. I'll have to see what changing that will offer me. The 283 that I pulled out of it original ps pump don't line up right on my 350 block that's why I'm asking. Nice looking motor you have. Clean compartment too.

  • If I noticed right. You don't have power steering correct? I'm asking because I'm running the same 1st generation block and also have the same high mount drivers side performance alternator bracket. I'd like to hook my power steering back up but can't seem to find a bracket to fit the drivers side lower. I tried Summit and Jegs, even google. Just can't seem to find the application. Anyway I was just wondering if in fact I'm not seeing correctly that you do have power steering what bracket you h

  • @cgrobe21 Yes I'm running my power steering. I am still using my stock bracket that came on the truck. However I did buy another to match the alternator bracket but can't use it right now. I have to run a double groove pulley to make it work. So what kind of car/truck do you have? Do you have a short or long water pump? I noticed there are more options for long pumps than short.

  • You seem very helpful in your comments..

Usually what we would use or do. Is install dual piping and 2 flowmaster exhuasts

for such an idle sound. Now, I just bought Chevy 78' k10 and I been noticing these such vehicles with cams/ thumpr cams and they sound beautiful. Now lets say my truck is stock. What would I need to install these such "thumpr cams".

  • @dzfades08 You would need to change the valve springs and pushrods ( assuming you kit a cam and lifter kit ). What I have is cca-7372-16 for the pushrods and cca-981-16 for the valve springs both made by compcams. In this video I have a stock converter and it works but its a slug at take off. It really needs 2000+ stall and lower gears to run better. Oh and make sure you run break in oil if you use a flat tappet camshaft. Trust me you will tear up the lobes quick if you don't!!!

  • @cdrummer316 Thanks a lot man. The most I have done on an engine is a complete tune-up, and I was a tire tech. Thats about all. Are you anywhere in the Vegas area by any chance?.

  • @dzfades08 No I live in Texas

  • which thumpr cam did you go with. what are the specs?

  • do you tow anything with that truck

  • @Thecarguy24 I have but not with this cam.

  • @forestrocks1980 Everything in the valve train has to match (not necessarily by brand). So you couldnt use a that cam with the stock heads

  • how do you keep that engine so clean?

  • very nice truck, we have one almost identical to that, except without the wood lines on the side. short bed. white with with blue interior and lettering.

  • What are you running for mufflers?

  • Were you able to just put the cam in without head work? i want to put one in my truck im going to only use the 350 for a short amount of time.. because im rebuilding the factory motor for it ..

  • @forrestrocks1980 You will need to change the valve springs. Stock won't work. Also the stock pushrods won't work. I doubt the stock rocker arms will work either. As for machining the heads for screw in studs, you may be able to get away with it but I would check with comp cams to be safe. I bought aftermarket heads so I didn't have to worry about what works and what doesn't.

  • i want one of those 70's trans ams, with that engine. to bad im not old enough to drive!

  • im looking for a new rear bumper whaere did you get yours??

  • If you live in Texas I will sell you mine. I hate this bumper. It came on the truck when I bought it but I plan on replacing it real soon.

  • @cdrummer316 i live in OK but if u can ship it

  • @Bullett1971 That may be more trouble than its worth. I sure to ship it would cost over $100. I sold all the trim on ebay and it was $85 to ship it cause it was over sized. Besides it needs to be re-chromed. You may want something perfect.

  • @cdrummer316 Hi I may be purchasing a 1970 Pickup like yours here soon and it is missing it's rear bumper. I read that you were trying to sell yours. I live in Texas as well and was wondering city you live in. I live in Dallas county in Irving.

  • Where did you get the chrome pulley set up from?

  • They are from March part# MCH-5090. I bought them from summitracing

  • Nice truck, really like the engine - super clean. Great video

  • Thanks for the comment. I saw your 64 truck video, very nice truck!

  • that truck is sic! its the cleanest engine i have seen on youtube, and the truck is clean as hell to!

  • Real nice !!! I have a 72 long bed and mite go with that cam..

    thanks for the video....

  • that thing has the nicest sounding cam idle of almost any vehicle i have heard on youtube. GREAT JOB!!!

i am thinking about using a thumpr or mutha thumpr in my 460 that i am building for my 68 Galaxie. I drive in town a lot and drive to some car shows 4-6 hours away from home. I would like to make some passes at a local drag strip too. I am looking more for driveability than performance, but still want that signiture Thumper cam sound... any suggestions? manual brakes, no power booster

  • I was looking at compcams website and they don't offer a thumpr cam for your engine. Generally the more duration a cam has the less bottom end you have. Thats why they recommend lower gears and looser converters and in the larger cams more compression. I would check out there website or give them a call. Based on what you want out of the car I would try the magnum 280H or if you want more radical the 292H.

  • Comment removed

  • here is the cam part number that i was looking at

    Thumpr™, 279TH7

    High Performance Street, Choppy/Thumping Idle

    Part Number: 34-600-5

It is not listed in the regular Ford Hydraulic flat tappet cams listing.

you have to go further down on the list on the left side of the screen to "Thumpr Cams" and it can be found in there. for the 460 it is offered in both hydraulic flat tappet and hydraulic roller configurations...

I looked into the magnum cams, I dont really know if thats what i want

  • The magnums are really good cams. For me it was a toss up between the cam I have and the mag. 280H. But the 57 chevy sold me plus my cam works with a stock converter but the 280H needs a stall. I've actually thought about getting a 280H and installing it just to compare the 2. I wouldn't have to change anything but the cam and lifters. Everything else like springs, pushrods and rocker arms will work fine.

  • i have 3.50 gear ratio and 27" tall tires. engine rpm is at ~3100 at 65 mph on highway.

I will run a 3000-3500 rpm stall if need be. Every persons definition of a limit for streetability is different. if not a thumpr then a magnum 292 or XE 284 from comp, otherwise a similar grind from Lunati.

  • i just cant get over how fuckin awesome your truck sounds!!! I am a Ford guy at heart, but this is truely music to my ears.

I'm starting to get really psyched about my build. I have been talking on some Ford forums and have been hearing a lot of good things about the Thumpr series cams.

What kind of torque converter do you have in it?

  • Thanks for the comment. There is a 57 chevy on youtube with the same cam and engine set up and when I heard his car I was sold. I like the thumpr cam very much and I'm sure you will too. I am still running my stock converter but in the winter I am pulling the engine and going to powder coat anything that can unbolted under the hood ie. rad. support, fender wells, hood hinges, etc. At that point I will install a B&M 2400 holeshot. I works fine with the stock but at lights I slip it in neutral.

  • I've been doing a lot of research for my build and I think that I have finally found what I am lookin for... Howards cams solid flat tappet $129.00 294/304 244/254 .588/.605 on a 112 lobe 2400-6200 rpm range I've gotten a lot of thumbs ups from the guys at the 460Ford forum and a lot of them are experianced engine builders. its a hot street cam and will make tons of torque. DynoSym5 says 500+ ft lbs from 2500-5500 and peak of about 575 at 4500. ~560 HP at 5500 rpms I'm SOLD!
  • @bigorangetrucker Howard cams are not as popular but they make a great product. I hear a lot of good things about there cams. Good luck with everything and let me know when you post a video of your 68. I want to hear those cylinders poppin!

  • i called Lunati, Comp, and Howards, and the guy at Howards cams seemed the most knowledgeable and helpful in helping me get the cam that meets the desired result of my build. The guy at Comp Cams was a joke and only recommended one cam and when I asked him why he suggested that one, he couldnt give me an answer. The howards is available on Summit for $129. and for the performance that it will probably deliver it should be a hell of a deal. lifters are another $100...

It works fine with the stock but at lights I slip it in neutral.

  • Very nice truck ya have

  • i was wondering what thumper cam you had, 279 or 297 maybe??

  • 279

  • very nice, i drive a 71. if i can give you some advice, in my experience if you move the fan another inch further away from the rad it will cool better. when my blades were too far in the shroud with the dollar bill test the four corners were actually blowing out instead of sucking

  • nice truck..still not sure what color im going to paint my 68..im leaning toward hugger orange and midnight black 2tone..anyway thats a clean build..everything but the big ricer tach..are you going to put one in your dash ?

  • Dude I paid $80 for that tach on ebay thats why its there. But to answer your question yes I want to get an in dash tach. I need a carbon fiber tach to match the rest of the gauges I just can't decide if I want to leave the dash factory looking or go with the Covan dash replacement. Decisions, decisions!!!

  • @cdrummer316 yea i understand..my 73 is in the paint shop now.. im thinking a green and black 2tone on her..but not sure yet..my 68 is going to be painted next ..probly at the end of this summer..peace man..

  • @cdrummer316

nice truck for a jar-head.. ha ha.. jus playin.

is that the solid or roller thmper?

  • Neither, they only make thumprs in hyd. flat and hyd. roller.

  • @philthyco that's mpt a ricer tach, those are used in old trucks like this a lot like in the lifted built up 70's fords and chevys. I'd one too for my 75 if they weren't so much.

  • @philthyco that's not a ricer tach, those are used in old trucks like this a lot like in the lifted built up 70's fords and chevys. I'd one too for my 75 if they weren't so much.

  • @ndubb1 that is a racing tach,yes.. but when its srewed to the dash or pillar it looks ricer..it would be better on the steering colum at least..but this truck has a place for the tach in the dash..im sure he is going to put a tach in its proper place when he gets a chance..peace.

  • @philthyco yea i kinda like it on the middle of the dash, but that's because it's easy to see while mud bogging or somethin and the shift light can be seen without even looking at it. Just a matter of taste it seems.

  • @ndubb1 you dont need a drag racing shift light for mudding..and this is not a 4x4 its a clean classic truck..all but the ricer tach screwed on the pillar.lol and if i were him id hook up all my other gauges and get rid of all those aftermarket shit he has clusterd up around the sterring wheel.

  • @philthyco I said old trucks and the old lifted ones, and it can be very useful. You set it in your power range or set it at redline so you don't over rev in the mud.

  • first thank-you for your reply earlier, im installing the comp thumper and wish to know is there a schedule or how often does one have to adjust valves? im new here and dont wanna come on stupid, but exactly what is flat tappet over roller and is there a lot of maint? (with this cam) -thank-you cdrummer316,....the fallguy11

  • Thumpr cams have hydraulic lifters either flat tappet or roller. Rollers are better cause there is less friction so you can get more rpms out of them. Flat tappet cams are alot cheaper and require break in oil. VERY important that you use break in oil and not regular oil on this cam. I use Joe Gibbs break in oil when I broke in my cam and then changed to his hot rod oil for regular use. As far as setting the valves just follow the instructions. Hyd. cams are easier than solid cams

  • what were the specs on this version of the thumpr cam

  • sounds really good, i cant believe ur using a 625 AFB carb. i think it would ask for more fuel, but if it works keep it...... nice truck and agreed below about the license plate thing.........

  • whats the big deal with covering the license plate anyways? Is it just paranoia? Or is there a legal reason or soemthing? alot ofguys do it and Im just curious why I guess. Ive got a custom plate on my 69, its my username....I would rather show it I guess.

  • I guess its a comfort thing. I wouldn't want anyone figuring out where I live and stealing my truck. With today's technology anything is possible.

  • @cdrummer316 good enough answer for me!

  • nice truck CD.

    clean and mean.

  • i hate to ask again but im building a 77 ford f-150 w/ a 400 engine, Got edelbrock heads (61629), weind intake, WND-8010, and looking for a good holly carb, can you reccomend me one for this app?...was thinking on a 770cfm street venger...what do you think?

  • Very nice!, can you tell me is the reg thumper cam and what else did you replace from stock?

Im building a 77 f-150 400 and wanna sound like yours.

  • Thanks for the comment Fallguy. Yes it is the reg thumpr or the smallest thumpr. When I did the cam swap I changed the heads so a lot of the work was done. If you plan on using stock heads then I recommend having them machined for screw in studs, guide plates and make sure you don't use stock valve springs. Honestly it would probably be cheaper to just buy a good set of alum. heads that are fully assembled. OH and get compcam push rods #cca-7372-16. Also use 1.5 full roller rockers.

  • awesome lope sounds sweet bro.what did you do over stock with valve train and all else?

  • ah, very nice, by far my favorite chevy truck body style... or any truck for that matter, engine sounds awesome!

  • Beautiful man. No other word comes to mind lol. I love those old trucks. I have a 73, the body style after this one, with a 350/350 and some work. I am looking for a nice cam like this to set it off. Thanks for the video man, and awesome truck.

  • hey truck sounds sweet, just order the same cam along with dartheads 64 cc. i have a72 cheynne thats tubbed out. are you runnin a vacum cannister on th e motor? comp said that i might have to.check my truck out on utube under "charlesshowtruck"

  • Thanks, I saw your video of truck. Very nice! I love the it sets. I love the way our trucks look tubed out. No cannister for me. In park or neutral I have plenty of vacuum but if I put it in to gear I will lose my brakes. So when I'm at a light I just throw it in neutral.

  • ok thanks

  • do you recommend a stall? and do you know if you have a flat tappet cam specs are under .500 for intake and exhaust you dont need to modify your heads?

  • My cam specs. out at lift .479in/.465ex and duration at .279in/.297ex. I changed my heads at the same time and they have the screw in studs, guide plates and stiffer springs. Comp doesn't recommend stock springs for this cam. If I were you I would call compcams and tell them what you have and what you want to do and they will tell what you need. Thats what I did before I started.

  • whats the stall?

  • Stock. I plan on getting a holeshot converter from B&M which will be a 2400 stall.

  • Nice truck. Do you have the Part # of the cam?

  • Thanks! CL12-600-4

  • love your truck. 70 is my favorite year. alot of guys like the older ones cuz of the lower hood profile but not me

  • engine is so clean...great vid and nice truck...check out my chevelle
