How come whenever a company makes an RPG with a turn-based battle system it's immediately deemed a blatant copy of Final Fantasy?

If I had to choose between Final Fantasy 7 and Legend of Dragoon, I'd pick the latter, because it's a MUCH better game by far.

Yes. FF7 came out in '97, and LoD in '99. But LoD took three years to complete, meaning it started production in about 1996. How could they copy a game that wasn't even out yet?
