so... repealing censorship, overthrowing fascist zealots and eventually bringing about a stable democracy is marxism now? fuck it, I'm red as hell. and fuck you if you're not too.
April 25, 1974 was a great day for Portugal, and it proves that socialism (more specifically democratic socialism) is a movement of freedom. The American right-wing ideologues here that think they know what socialism is could tell you very little about the Portuguese Carnation Revolution of 1974.
it was marxist ideology to bring down europes great, longstanding monarchies....without the church, portugal has a birth rate of 1.1, in demographics this is called death be level, meaning the country will collapse in 2 generations and cant be reversed. the aristocracy was the only shield from the communist, international jewish bankers and their international humanist organiztions (EU UN)
Totoscope, your illiterate and moronic rantings don't even deserve a reply, but I just had to remind you that Allende WAS elected democratically and Pinochet WAS an unelected murderous and corrupt dictator, if you are going to make imbecile comments at least learn a little history and base your rantings on fact, I supose you would have been quite happy to live under a military dictatorship that indiscriminately tortured and murdered men, women and children while lining their own pockets?
Yes. By the same time, try to read something about the work KGB was doing in Chili with the false "democrat" president Alliende before Pinchet put a end to the marxist revolution there. And please, don't came here with those ball-shit we eart everyday on tv!
You look a person inteligent and curious, so let me tell you that this movie is something very romantic but which have nothing to do with the reallity. And there is nothing funny to see Portugal and Africa become like Cuba or Romania during these crazy years. Fortunatle NATO chips enter in Lisbon to advise these marxists captains that NATO will not accept to see Portugal follow the orders of URSS!
The reason why Portugal became a moderate social democracy had NOTHING to do with the USSR nor America. Chancellor Willy Brandt of the German Federal Republic intervene in such a way to avoid American and Soviet influence, and he should be commended for this.
Portugal became a moderate social democracy because of another "coup-d'Etat" IN 25 NOVEMBER 1975 leaded by RAMALHO EANES and JAIME NEVES and supported BY CIA. Clever BOY!!
As a practicing democratic socialist, I understand the concept of third camp internationalism. Third camp internationalism opposes BOTH communism and capitalism with equal passions. The Carnation Revolution was as close as there was to a "third camp revolution" as one can be while retaining membership in NATO once the revolution was accomplished. As I said, Willy Brandt had a lot to do with retaining Portugal's road to democracy. But I'll do some more research to keep an open mind.
The CIA seem to love dictatorship, not democracy. Look at Chile, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan especially in the 1980s, and other fine examples of their bloody work; then you'll see the CIA for what it is which is an organization that hinders progress.
@marklin666 SO, Portugal is a 'stupid' country, huh? Gee, your country doesn't even know its name--is it Holland, The Netherlands, and why are you Dutch? Wow, you guys sound pretty confused and 'stupid' to me...as far as Portugal...why did you guys always follow them in their expeditions--you know, like Coraçao, it's Dutch, correct, but it was Portuguese first, after all the name means heart in portuguese...for a stupid country, you Holland and Netherlands people like the Portuguese a LOT!
although dictatorship is against all my values and despite the fact that this was the most beautiful revolution ever, I WILL NOT TAKE INSULTS TO MY COUNTRY!!!
Yes, we were poor and illiterate (if you live on a dictatorship, the best way to keep it is by limiting education, so that's why in evrey dictatorship, most people don't go to shcool, it wasn't just in portugal!!!) but we were never stupid!!!!!
Fascism imposes change whereas Nationalism does not. No man did more to preserve Portugal's identity than Salazar. There was no cult around him unlike Franco's Spain or Mussolini's Italy [PAGAN-FASCIST DOGMA!]. Furthermore, Nationalism couldn't be considered a cult unlike today -- from 1141 to 1974 Portugal was a National Catholicist nation off the occidental coast of Europe.
Salazar was not a pagan and did not impose a different doctrine upon the Portuguese. As a matter of fact, his methodologies to impede change was "fascist" but his overall aim was not. Salazar was a National Catholicist and his motto was "God, Fatherland and Family" - the essence of the Portuguese mindset from 1141 to 1974. He kept and guarded what he inherited from our ancestors.
Don't be so bitter... The time of the great Goddess will be back soon... We will once again be united with nature chanting psalms under moonlight in clearings, and having sex with beautiful and easy women...
Thanks for sending me this vid Miguel. I dont understand the whole significance, but I get the gist of it -- liberation from a fascist dictator. All the best for your day of celebration.
With Obama in office in America, we are doing our own celebrating almost every day.
May the world grow to be a more peaceful and tolerant place -- with more empowerment for the workers -- and less economic rape by the multi-national corporations!!!!
When Portugal was actually Portuguese. Now it is polarized more than ever -- Socialist and Communist dogma infecting the very notions of "family", "God" and "nationhood". Our streets filled with crime and a government that is both morally and fiscally corrupt. Portugal is no longer Portuguese.
but that is thanks to the socialist party with theyr rightwing policies, theyre not really socialist, they can be considered mildly fascists, for that is theyr true colours
The Portuguese Army would self-destruct from within. Otelo de Carvalho's COPCON and FP-25 were terrorist movements that originated from the MFA [Movimento das Forcas Armadas]. This just goes to prove how close we were from going into a civil war all due to ... politics. The word that Salazar most despised.
that was merely a fraction of the army, mostly politically motivated officers who lost the notion of what they were and whose actions dishonored their rank and uniform, for a soldier DOES NOT get involved in politics.
You are absolutely correct. However, this small fraction of the military was able to advance with the 'coup' against the Estado Novo. How come? You know, many people do not know this -- Agostinho Neto's brother-in-law was a commanding officer of the Portuguese vanguard. He supported the MFA and the MPLA in Angola without actually integrating its ranks...
...The same pertains to Spinola and other officers that were cowardly retreating from their duties as commanders-in-chief of our armed forces. Basically, the whole military was to blame and not only one small fraction. Their indifference, ingratitude, cowardliness and political ambitions were the primary cause that there was a 'coup d'etat' to begin with! They betrayed that foundation of what is to be Portuguese!
no he doesnt, but he does what in his mind is right, and that isd not a dishonourable thing to do, they were the portuguese heroes that will be remembered for a very long time.
the problem with "thinking soldiers" is that if they think something different than you (for example, that a dictatorship is good, like in Chile, 1973), you can't do anything about it. having a gun in your hand involves responsibility. you can't just do what you think is best.
he problem with "thinking soldiers" is that if they think something different than you (for example, that a dictatorship is good, like in Chile, 1973),
Any person who decides that a dictatorship is good, is not thinking. So, i keep my mind, any thinking soldier, is a revolutionary...
E atençao, que eu sou do mais antimilitarista possivel, e um anarquista... se bem que nao da facçao "capitalista"...
Ideally a soldier shouldn't get involved in politics, but as used to say Von Clausewitz, war is the continuation of politics by other means, so when the politics are obviously flawed, it is hard to remain neutral.
I don't know much about Portugal's history besides what Henry the Navigator and Vasco de Gama contributed to western expansionism. Thank you for this piece of informative wealth.
You would be surprised. Portugal is one of the oldest countries (founded in 1139). All started when Afonso Henriques fought against his own mother. In the Battle of Aljubarrota the portuguese won against a bigger army from Spain with a smart tactic. Fernão de Magalhães (Magellan) circumnavigate the Earth. etc, etc Until D. Sebastião lost a stupid religious war without descendents. Portugal lost it's independence, and it was restored in 1640. After that Portugal wasn't the same.
Lisbon was destroyed with a Earth Quake and Marquês de Pombal rebuild it.
Brothers fought in Portugal: one wanted to continue be a king with absolute power, the other (a king of Brazil) fought in the liberal side. It was a civil war, and the liberals won. The portuguese people also expelled the Napolean army.
D. Carlos was a coward king. He gave up an african country to England. It was assassinated and the Republic was implanted.
That's why in the Portuguese hymn says to restore the glory of Portugal, like the old days, and the original version ended with "against the british, fight, fight!". Now it ends with "against the cannons, fight, fight!"
Thank you for that lesson. I actually remember reading about that earthquake. It had one of the highest magnitudes ever considered, of course before the Richter scale had been introduced.
I read a little about this pedro after you sent me the video. Cogratulations on your festival. May we all do our part to continue the fight for human rights

Because of the Ultimatum of 1890 and the various political and economic sanctions brought upon our monarchy by the British Parliament.
D. Carlos was an impotent king.
