why is air exposure bad? like besides the obvious discomfort and dying, if you like take it out 30 secs at a time (thats what she said) is that still like longtermishly harmful?
A fish cannot breathe out of water. It has already undergone a very stressful event and couple that with not being able to breathe could push the fish past the "point of no return." Sublethal stressors can accumulate and cause delayed mortality... That's why it's bad.
Awesome video and great releases. there are a lot of streams here in ohio where i'm from that look a lot similar to where you are fishing. I'm with you guys heavy power pro line and stiff rods and horse them in.
Muskie colorations vary GREATLY across the species primarily spotted, barred, and clear. Not ALL muskies have stripe patterns, in fact most of the ones I've caught are clear or a mixture spotted/barred.
There are also different number of pores on the lower jaws of muskies and pike. A simple Google search will reveal the distinguishing characteristics.
A muskie is a related family member. However, muskie are extremely different. The key defining characteristic separating the two is the shape of the fins, specifically the caudal (tail) fin - muskies it's pointed, pike it's more rounded. There are other subtle characteristics to separate the two, but when looking at pictures this is the most obvious. Hope this helps!!!
Thanks, Blink! We try not to play them out too much in order to reduce stress. Plus, we use very stiff rods and 80 pound no-stretch superbraid so we really don't even give them a chance to fight... lol!
We were very fortunate to get those fish on video from strike to release. Typically it takes many man hours to get that kind of footage; we got lucky!
What I don't get is why you keep opening the spool? Just set you drag!

any idea for their behaviour!? why the hell muskies are coming in this shallow water?/especially during the fall??? in big nubers as I see!!!
crazysturgeon 4 years ago
It's not uncommon to see large numbers of fish slide shallow in the fall. They're simply following the shad movements.
