A simply incredible song and video, that takes me back to a times so many crazy things were happening in my life - good and bad. It is amazing how emotive songs are, and Donna brings it back with a mighty BANG! Way to go gal xxx
This was Donna Summer's biggest pop hit in years & was the last important pop hit of her career. The video being out of sync bothers me, oh well. Ms. Summer & SAW turned out to be a great combination. How the hell did they do the background? Was it strobe lights or speeding nighttime traffic? Nice touch with the maps; part of it shows the trail going to Boston (her hometown).
Donna never stopped recording after the 70s, but there were a couple of albums she did in the 80s that went unreleased. She had a handful of hits during that time with the stuff that was released though - She Works Hard For The Money (83) was a huge hit in the States and was one of the first videos by a black female to gain heavy rotation on MTV. Finger On The Trigger (82), State Of Independence (82), Unconditional Love (83), Dinner With Gershwin (87) were also hits in the UK and/or the US.
Donna's highly anticipated comeback and she came back with a bang. One of the best dance tracks of the 80s. I'm sure anyone who was on the dance floor with me would agree!
The previous comment about Stock Aitken Waterman hit the nail on the head. This could easily have been sung by Rick Astley or Kylie Minogue or even Sonia!
I do like some of the songs but when you write the same song slightly differently 500 times you are going to have a few hits. Monkeys and typewriters come to mind.
Fair play though it is a sound that defined pop music in the 80s and made them a shit load of money.
There are very different S.A.W. production. Listen to Princess and Kylie, totally different sound. Or Mel & Kim and Austin Howard. Or Dead or alive and Sinitta. Maybe there is something wrong with your ears, or you don't know anything about music, but S.A.W. made the best popsongs ever!!!
If you slow down Kylie Minogue to 1/2 speed it sounds very much like Rick Astley! If you are claiming SAW songs are all individual you are defining music in very narrow terms,
Ha, ha, ha. It's good that everyone has different tastes. I think S.A.W. are best ever!!! Even better than bands like Pink Floyd, Dire Straits and Fleedwood Mac. Like the Reynold Girls sang and Mike Stock wrote.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
stock aitken waterman productions were ALL the same. for a couple of years they used singers as money-machines and then all of them faded away. all of their songs, like 200 songs?, were practically the same. they sounded rubbish then. sound rubbish now. it's a pity she accepted this song jus for the sake of money and popularity. hers was a desperate move to regain some popularity. it's a shame.
There the best producers ever!!! And all of their 200 songs are not gone? They are played very loud on my stereo everyday. And I love the songs even more than in the 80's.

Reminds me of the summer of '89.Driving a '66 Mustang, stopped in Shereveport, LA for the night. Found a gay bar and we all partied! This song had just been released. Had a great time. In Shereveport, no less!
This song was released from the album titled "Another Place and Time" on Atlantic Records. Her previous album titled 'All Systems Go" was the last album recorded under Geffen Records. Donna looks so great in this video. These new young female dance artists need to be taking notes on Donna. She's fabulous....
Spring 1989. It was #7 in April 1989 on the Pop Charts. It also held the record as the longest run on the Billboard Dance charts for over 10 years for something like 20 weeks in the top ten.
I first heard this song while listening to a soundcheck of a radio station in New York City from 1989; when I first heard the song, before I heard Donna's voice, I also thought it was a Rick Astley song (I am a big Rick Astley fan, so I would have not been disappointed). They likely sound the same, because both artists had the Stock, Aitken, Waterman team as their producers.
this song reminds me when I used to dance to this in the night clubs in london, wow!! that was way back in 1997. gulp!
