Blocking the shot is good but if it goes out of bounds, they get another shot to score, which is a bad thing. Blocks are a great way to set up the fast break, if you can swat the ball to a teammate or recover it yourself you can set up a fast break which is 2 almost guaranteed points. If you do this 2 or 3 times a game, that's a 8 to 12 point differential, how's that unimportant?

Given a choice to block the ball or grabbing it, I'd rather grab it and keep possession. (again, if given a choice). I just see most players choose to block the ball.
