My guess is all saiyans can breathe in space, if Vegeta, Bardock, Broly and Paragus all did it why shouldn't Goku be able to? Also, it would be pretty anticlimatic if the fight between the first super saiyan in generations and the tyrant lord of galaxies only lasted 5 minutes...
The best possible explanation would be that Frieza can SURVIVE in space without breathing, even though he says he can breathe in it. also, it makes sense that Saiyans can survive in space with out breathing seeing as Bardock did. Frieza only says Goku can't to scare him into believing it.
@anime1973 i think it's reasonable to argue that there is still air in the lungs which as long as there is enough to spare, would be enough to speak, although the range of sound admittedly would be limited.

Look, ths solution is simpe. Basicaly Sayians can breathe in space (you can see Vegeta and Nappa in space before destroying Arlia), but Goku and Vegeta have been too long on earth without going into space so they lost that ability.
The planet did explode in 5 minutes but the anime version added a lot of filler and slowed down the action.
Not only did Freeza say only he could survive in space, but so did Kaio, the watcher of the North Galaxy. It's not hard to believe Bardock could survive a good deal longer than the average human or that they were actually in the planet's atmosphere.

The only exception is the case with bardock, which did happen in the manga. However because bardock and a few hundred other species of intelligent creatures were out there where bardock was standing I have to believe there was air there. How can you "breathe" in nothingness and convert it to oxygen...or anything else for that matter...furthermore, there is no pressure in space, so on top of breathing both of them would just have their heads blow up due to the inner pressure expanding the body without having outer pressure to counteract it.

Well, here's the thing, a lot of animes take place in shorter or longer time periods than they really do. While it was a lie by general standards that the earth would blow up in five minutes, they probably drew it out to tell the story, so five minutes their time took about seven episodes our time. The Dragon Ball franchise is notorious for doing this.
Breathing in space is probably something that can be learned, just like some Saiyans can control themselves in Oozaru form and some can't.
Also, DBKai which ofcourse wasn't out when thos vid was made, states that Freeza doesn't breath in space, more like making an invisible air bubble, and when near death slowing his vital signs to survive in the vacuum because he was near death.
regarding #3, the saiyans that were in space still had their tails but goku's was removed
i'm not saying tails allow saiyans to breathe in space but it's a possible theory as frieza would have noticed goku has no tail for a saiyan and he should have remembered that the saiyans he faught before could breathe in space
My take on lie #3 is that there's one of three possiblities:
1) Saiyans can breath in space, but only for a limited amout of time, which was what Freeza was really getting at.
2) Breathing in space is an ability learned, like flight, the former of which was something that Goku hadn't learned or,
3) Saiyans can breath in space every bit as much as Freeza's people can, something Freeza knew Goku didn't know, his lie being nothing more than a feeble bluff

that was probably in the highest part of the Planet's atmosphere, just barely breathable but enough for Bardock to last up there an hour or so. And it was so high up it looked like space...

Actually 1 and 2 aren't really lies. they just turned out to be not true. If he would have used his full power it would have destroyed namek and goku. The biggest lie here is the 5 minutes...it only took like 2 hours to actually blow up the planet

If Bardock was in space then all the other aliens could breathe too? What about Frieza's blast towards Bardock that caused a meteor like entry effect? That wouldn't have happened if they were all in space above the planet.
It's like the Moon that blew up twice and that Goku traveled to without going ape, it all makes no real sense cause it's Dragonball.

After Goku comes back from training at Kami's lookout he mentions that the moon was restored (after being blown up by Master Roshi) in exchange for his tail being removed. Look up moon on dragonball wiki to see for yourself.

Not having the original voices is just aggitating and uncomfortable plus some of the older funnier lines get cut and the whole show loses some of its feeling.

b) vegeta stepped out of a space pod to destroy a planet.. and was talking with nappa
c) vegeta was trying to locate Goku and was in outer space many times
d) when vegeta was training to become a super saiyan on some rock or moon in outer space... he wasn't wearing any special breathing equipment

1) That wasn't a lie, just a miscalculation.
2) Just because it's 7 episodes, that doesn't mean 7 episodes worth of time has actually passed. I thought that was common knowledge with any series.
3) The movies aren't canon, so Bardock breathing in space has no relevance.

Well, here's the thing, a lot of animes take place in shorter or longer time periods than they really do. While it was a lie by general standards that the earth would blow up in five minutes, they probably drew it out to tell the story, so five minutes their time took about seven episodes our time. The Dragon Ball franchise is notorious for doing this.

Breathing in space is probably something that can be learned, just like some Saiyans can control themselves in Oozaru form and some can't.
Also, DBKai which ofcourse wasn't out when thos vid was made, states that Freeza doesn't breath in space, more like making an invisible air bubble, and when near death slowing his vital signs to survive in the vacuum because he was near death.

In case anyone doesn't know, lie 3 is invalid.
If you watch friezas death ball hit planet vegeta you can see bardock was at the end of the atmosphere in planet vegeta allowing him to breath.
Vegeta and nappa getting out of there ships to blow up that planet is filler, Meaning that it is non cannon.
Saiyans and humans are nearly the same.
Saiyans have lungs like people so they have to breath.

regarding #3, the saiyans that were in space still had their tails but goku's was removed
i'm not saying tails allow saiyans to breathe in space but it's a possible theory as frieza would have noticed goku has no tail for a saiyan and he should have remembered that the saiyans he faught before could breathe in space

My take on lie #3 is that there's one of three possiblities:
1) Saiyans can breath in space, but only for a limited amout of time, which was what Freeza was really getting at.
2) Breathing in space is an ability learned, like flight, the former of which was something that Goku hadn't learned or,
3) Saiyans can breath in space every bit as much as Freeza's people can, something Freeza knew Goku didn't know, his lie being nothing more than a feeble bluff

@yamisupersaiyan it should be noted that at many times vegeta is also shown breathing in space or in a liquid, but goku on the other hand at always holds his breath, so i have to assume that its a learned skill, and not something they are born with the ability to do

Actually 1 and 2 aren't really lies. they just turned out to be not true. If he would have used his full power it would have destroyed namek and goku. The biggest lie here is the 5 minutes...it only took like 2 hours to actually blow up the planet

The whole can Saiyans breathe in space has been debated since1989. This just an odd mistake that pops up as Toei doesn't use logic.
If Bardock was in space then all the other aliens could breathe too? What about Frieza's blast towards Bardock that caused a meteor like entry effect? That wouldn't have happened if they were all in space above the planet.
It's like the Moon that blew up twice and that Goku traveled to without going ape, it all makes no real sense cause it's Dragonball.

@xTheDynastQueenx If you watch the Dragonball series carefully there actually is no contradiction regarding the moon. After Goku comes back from training at Kami's lookout he mentions that the moon was restored (after being blown up by Master Roshi) in exchange for his tail being removed. Look up moon on dragonball wiki to see for yourself.

@herschman321: I was not referring to the fact that the moon blew up in DB first but the fact that Goku did not transform when he traveled to it and that both times it blew up it had no negative effects on the Earth. The series doesn't always follow logic, whether it be it's own or scientific, that's all I was saying.

@yamisupersaiyan Not screaming extra episodes moatly show the day-to-day activities of the characters which shows you why they become the way they they are and just funny and all around humorous situations and the dragonball on tv will ALWAYS be the one they associate with dragonball because thats the on thats out there. Not having the original voices is just aggitating and uncomfortable plus some of the older funnier lines get cut and the whole show loses some of its feeling.

@yamisupersaiyan All of that added on top of the fact that older viewers watch it because theyre long time fans and want to relive a small protion of their childhood while watching a classic anime with their children are alienated by the cuts and re-dubbing. Whole sagas that were cut were actually kind of interesting to watch because theyre just fun to watch. I f you just want to watch the minimal amount of sagas and character progression then youre not really a fan and its harder to spot
