How to Fly Fish : How to Attach the Tippet to the Leader

no the tippet connects the leader and the fly. the fly leader is light and not heavy like the fly line. and if you dont cut it at all, you dont need to buy anymore until it breaks or gets very old and freys

plz someone help me, i got a new setup and i am new to fly fishing, plz correct me if i'm wrong, the tippet, is just a connector from the line to the leader. and is fly leader special or something, i know its tapered, but do you have to buy more, i dont get it. . .please someone help explain. . .thank you so much

Tippet is between leader and the fly. You don't need a tapered leader. 2 to 3 sections of consecutively smaller diameter leader, then a light tippet works well. This is done to avoid cutting the leader shorter with each fly change. You just trim the fly off at the tippet to change flies, and when the tippet becomes too short, just change it out at the leader. Hope you have a great time.

I suggest you read up on leader selection. There are so many available for different types of fishing. Probably the most popular for trout fishing is the 5x leader which is about 4 lb. test at the thinner end. They also can be made by hand by using consecutively smaller lengths of monofiliment attached together (forming the taper) using a blood or nail knot. Tippets are your last link to the fly and are usually 12"-24". For trout fishing I use 5x-8x tippet depending on size of the fly.

Erokk4, from reel to fly, the order is backing, fly line, leader, tippet then fly.

The leader is tapered to help with casting and fly presentation. The tippet is sort of like an extension of the leader, it's the finest part and helps really make the fly unnoticeable. It's also easier to replace tippet material as it's on a spool than to constantly buy new leaders.

screw tippets and all that unnecessary equipment!!! JUST USE 4 POUND TEST.4 basic dry flys...adams wullf, royal coachman, mosquito, caddis pattern...4 nymphs...hare's ear, pheasant tail, prince, hellgramite. 4 streamers muddler minnow, black nose dace, woolly booger, mickey finn, 4 terrestrials, beetle, hopper, black cricket, ant. roll cast ur fly line...and most important BE QUIET!!! sneak around and u'll catch so many fish...then put them back.outfished guys with all that fancy equipment

The blood knot is the correct knot for tying the leader to the tippet. But I never saw it done this way.

My personal preference is a (SCAFFOLD) knot or for slage ( A DUBBLE FISHERMANS KNOT)... It is actsholy a climbing knot used to connect a life line to a saddle or even tie two lines together... I put my life on this knot every time I climb (I am a tree trimmer) So I climb a lot of trees... I have found that this particular knot I am talking about seems to work just as well for fishing as it dose for putting a life on a line. It is small (very hard to see) And very ez to tie.

Another of the "Experts" calls it a Surgeon's Knot when he ties the same knot in the same application. They need to get their act together on knots. On the other hand I find some of their tips useful.
