I believe he had congenital spinal stenosis, had a neck injury with a herniated cervical disc that required surgery. He could have been paralyzed had it not been repaired or had he continued to play.

@cookie31245 What exactly are you smoking? Because it's effecting your brain cells. Before you get on here trying to be an Internet tough guy, maybe you should clear your mind and read first.
When did I say I "played"? I said I watched a football game.
I remember this game, but I forget the QB's name. He was running all over us (OSU) and we had no answer. That is, until Kat blew him up on this play. He had to get helped off the field and didn't scramble one more time after that hit. Result: Bucks win.
@badkarmabaroo you are a stupid ass mother fucker dont even say you played, nobody believes you , i checked your channel and its all guitar shit not one thing about football or nothing your a gay queer dont ever say you played for a team BITCH
Even before Katz'enmoyer's injury-plagued pro career, something went wrong with his potential. If I recall correctly, he began his senior year as one of the most high-profile player in the country, but his play somehow dropped off sharply from his junior season. On a televised game, I recall a commentator joking that the "Big Cat" was playing like a house cat. What happened to Katz after he showed so much potential?
@sportshistorybuff pretty simple....other teams started designing their offensive scheme to shade away from his side, if he played strong they went weak side and visa versa....teams were litterally running away from him....he still had a heck of a season running guys down from the backside....

Corby Jones did not even weigh close to 230 pounds you fucking idiot. It was a good hit but some of you OSU guys need to calm down about it. It wasn't that great.
It seems as though I know a hell of a lot more than you. Anyone that likes "Lady Gaga" can't know much about football. LOL@ you and your made up stats.
pffff hahahaha did you ever play football???? when you outweigh a quarterback by that much it doesn't matter where you hit him, he's gonna go down..... now if you are a tiny guy (which it sounds like) then yea you would probably have to tackle low because you can't take anyone down like a real man
it sucks that Big Kat got hurt in the NFL i don't blame him for not coming back after that neck injury, i mean seriously, is life long pain and agony worth maybe 12 years in the NFL? plus after only 3 years he still has good enough money sittin in the bank but he would have been a great linebacker, though Chris Spielman is still my favorite
everyone on here needs to stop playing sunday morning quarterback. there was a quarterback in the open, a linebackers dream. it was a hard hit and thats it. none of this talk about the nfl or the big ten or going pro. only 1% of college athletes ever go pro. good hit, there are plenty of them to fill the highlight reel for years.
The doctors may have cleared him but any injury like the one he suffered would make anyone reconsider their job choice. As far a a bust he had 101 tackles and 3.5 sacks and it wasnt even a full season. Oh forgot he had one pick too :)

Not a perfect tackle but it got the job done. Kids, don't do it this way, don't go in with your head down, ever--face up and across the front of the body and the shoulder delivers the blow.
I'm also intimately familiar with the physical side effects of steroid use: a heavy, pronounced brow, big jaw--there are a few recent OSU backers lately who come to mind.
And Corby Jones stayed in his pocket, never to venture forth from his protective shield...for the vicious creature known as the Katzenmoyer was waiting for him :)

He was great in high school because of his steroid use. He single destroyed us 2 times in 1995. Once in the playoffs and regular season. He was a good player but not a bright kid.
Andy Katzenmoyer was well on his well to supplanting Ted Johnson as the starting MLB for the Patriots, and he was light years ahead of Tedi Bruschi. But he broke his neck.
The guy was simply born to play MLB, his physical prowess is simply unreal, 6'4'' 245, ran a 4.5 40, benched 400 lbs. and cleaned 450 lbs..

He reminds me of alot of former Buckeyes, good in college but couldn't cut it in the NFL. By the way, I am still waiting for AJ Hawk to go to a Pro Bowl. And just like that, Troy Smith is still a backup with the Ravens until they get another quarterback and then he slides to #3.
aj hawk was in the top ten in the league as far as tackles 1st year in the league. Still waiting? he has had 2 seasons under him, and he plays middle linebacker. there is a learning curve, unlike running back. he will be good. and about troy smith, if the ravens would give him a chance he could make it. he got into 2 games last year and had close to 200 yards in each of them and a total of 3 touchdowns. plus he made some key plays on 3rd down with his legs. not bad for a rook.
Like I said, Aj Hawk has never been an all pro and might not ever be. Troy Smith will never be a starting QB in the league unless the #1 or #2 QB is injured

that may be the case for some players, but labeling katz as a buckeye who couldn't cut it in the nfl is retarded. he had a nice rookie season, starting 11 games and posting over 100 tackles and a handful of sacks before suffering what ended up being essentially a career-ending neck injury the following year. i don't think that anybody would deem that as "not being able to cut it", so get your shit straight before you make a generalization like that.
Thats how tackling is supposed to be done, you put your fucking face in your opponents chest and you drive him through the ground. I playeyd against him in high school, he was one of the greatest players i've ever seen, followed his career with interest because of it,he was one of the best thats been at osu in the mid field,he desearves to take the only 2 time highsman trophy winners # outa retirerment, but I say this with great pride,I put him on his arse for one play .. the next one he stompt my shit but for 1 hit i rocked his world. Its not the size of the dawg in the fight but the size of the fight in the dawg.
