Actually, they do use M-3s and M-7s on the Hudson line. However, the electrification ends in Croton-Harmon so they use diesel engines along with the cars that are meant to be pulled by them past Croton-Harmon and that includes Poughkeepsie. If you want to take a M-3, you can take it from Grand Central or wherever you're starting but as I said earlier, you would have to transfer at Croton-Harmon to continue on to Poughkeepsie.
No there are no M-7s on the New Haven line. Only M-2s, M-4s, and M-6s. However, the new haven line is supposed to get M-8s fairly soon and people on the new haven line are the only ones to have them because the new haven line doesn't have third rail, instead the new haven line has catenaries.
@rbjplay13: WHAT TRAINS RUN ON THE HUDSON LINE? JUST THE CATENARIES? Hope not. Im taking Metro-North for 1st time next month to meet someone in Poughkeepsie. I hope they use M3's on that line
there are M4s, but I don't think any M6s YET. The M4s are about to undergo a fairly big rebuild at which time all of them will get the treatment, then the M6s will be next in line....
CSR Rebuild stands for "Critical Systems Replacement Rebuild" meaning all critical systems are replaced or rebuilt while the car is in the shop - effectively rebuilding the entire car below the sill/frame level....and certain components above.
I`ve been there so did you right?

M2s, the red front [given in the refurbishment program IIRC] gives it away.

Are there M7's on that line? M7's are the Metro-North smartcars that appear on the Harlem line.

Are there M4s or M6s with a red/white painted front, or is it just M2s?

If I may ask, since there rae people downright paranoid about giving out this sort of information, what will occur with these rebuilds exactly?
travelsonic 3 years ago
who is rae? and why would they be paranoid? The info is all available if you look at the MTA and MN Capital Plans.....

That lead car is an M2 or M4. DEFINATELY not an M1A/M3A and not an M6 either.
