  • I tried Pho for the first time when my son took me to a Vietnamese restaurant on Yonge Street in Toronto and it was absolutely FANTASTIC! A massive bowl was less than $7 and the flavour is so good that I can't even describe it. Considering I'm afraid to try new things, this says a lot about Pho. If you're scared to try to cook it, go and have some at a restaurant. The Vietnamese know what they're doing!

  • what the pho?

  • You've inspired me Jack! I always get my pho from this little place down the street and it always seemed so hard that I never considered trying to make it myself. Bravo!! To the kitchen!!!!

  • Oh I'm from Vietnam that pho is good pho is noodles

  • hearing you eat it is pretty gross, maybe moving the mic away

  • why is there a washing machine in the back

  • @eyuencw his laundry room is part of his kitchen, its pretty common...

  • Phok

  • I made this without the peppers and more noodles, came out perfect, thanks Jack...

  • Fhu-k.

  • Woah, you cook like a man, not adding water to the beef broth

  • AMERICAN MADE PHO.

  • You're saying "Pho" right. I speak fluent vietnamese

  • It's pronounced Phó and

  • i like pho(:

  • Most people use Chicken broth so it's light don't they?

  • Don't look like pho to it clear not cloudy

  • Whoa do not make it like this. This is like the lazy man way to make pho. And I bet he's lying his ass off after he tried to eat that.

FOOL try to make the real pho. And trust me if you search more in YouTube other people do it the right way. Damn Americans always trying to make shit simple. That's why there's no such thing as "American" food. All Americans do is copy and try to change the way it suppose to be. Smh. That's why real Mexicans don't really eat at "tex-mex" Mexican restaurants c

  • @MrFakeNine Wow. Way to be a bigoted asshole. Not ALL Americans take the easy, or "lazy way" about things. Geez.

  • pho pronounce wrong :^

  • no offence but the amount of chili sauce u put in jack scares me the same way my dad does, he just put three times more O^O

  • @2mangamonsters lol i put 10 times more than jack did

  • Woah just beef broth no water or anything

  • @lyndaspindi me too XD

  • wow im viet and i love pho

  • Why would you start cutting things on the plate?!? You never do that!

  • 0:48 really?

  • @brandoleo1 I agree my mom always cooks it for our family and this is the time of the year when my mom makes alot of pho

  • Hey Jack, you can season the beef with some crushed black pepper if you like!

You can add green onions for more flavor too, boil water in a separate pot and give the noodles about a 30 second dip, it softens them up easier and helps you prepare noodles for the family :)

They also have meatballs served with the soup, look for the key words "bo vien"

I personally mix the hoison sauce, sriracha, and lime in a small plate to dip my meat, you should try it!

  • Hey Jack, by any chance u see this,

what my family does traditionally is we caramelize the onion

by wrapping it in foil and turning it on the stove.

also we use ox tail and beef shanks

to start our broth, trust me its AMAZING.

  • @krazielilvietkids LOL wow, you would be on this video Henry.

  • @qwopboss Who's this LOl? and yeah i would

  • I really enjoyed this video i like the tips you gave! Thanks.

  • You missed green onions

  • Another tip for onion: My Food Tech teacher runs onion under cold water before cutting. The water weighs down the gas or gets rid of it or something.

  • @jakatak69 Jack I think it taste good if you mix the saracha and hoisin sauce together o dip the beef

  • i at pho every time when i got to an Vietnamese restaurant its actually amazing

  • that was a good pho bo, but try changing up some of your spices you do not need to use the standard ones. every vietnamese family adds a special spice to up there own pho. oh for those that not know bo is beef in vietnamese

  • you're supposed to boil the noodles before you add the broth so that they're softer :)

  • there no cinnamon in pho cause my mom alway make it in vietnam

  • Can you make Bun Bo Hue (a Vietnameese noodle soup)?

  • Thanks for posting this - all the other Pho vids I tried to learn from used bones, and you had to skim fat, parboil, etc. Am definitely gonna make this with some sliced fondue beef from the supermarket. Thanks again!

  • my mother makes pho in the same way!

  • Tit Pho nua qua !

  • Ironically my local Pho place is called Pho King. The owner still doesn't get it either!

  • well.....PHOck you :P haha jokes, love the video

  • this should be lazy mans pho

  • Damn, pretty good for a first, cause let me tell you, making it well is pretty damn hard so I commend you on that ^_^

  • it's spelt phở and here's a little secret- hoisin sauce tastes pretty damn close to heinz BBQ sauce so feel free to use that as well

  • Thats INSTANT Pho..

  • i assume someone has already corrected you on its pronunciation lol?

  • usually the number is also their address number. so if the restaurant is at 243 main street, the name will be pho 243.

  • I like the boba smoothies at Pho :-D

  • I knew that hot liquid can cook beef!

  • We say Anise (a-knees) in Australia.

  • mmmmmmmmmmmm hoisin sauce? sounds interesting HAHA i never put any of that sauce in

  • It's lovely how you made ph

  • Dam a white guy knows how to hold chopsticks properly.... im chinese and I cant even do that /FML

  • Lol, whenever I hear it's name, I think FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU! Makes me really want this.

  • That just looks incredible jack! awesome episode! :D

  • I'm vietnamese, and seriously, this came out like perfect. NOMNOMNOM :DD

  • so whats ur number?:P

  • Im not vietnam but i LOVE eating that stuff its soooooo good!

  • Note of warning lol for those of you who are trying this. If you don't like very hot food, play with the amount of Siracha that you add. I love the jalepeno and siracha too, but that was A LOT of siracha lol. Awesome job though, made it look easier than I thought. I may even try Chicken stock, with chicken with the same principal as you did with the Beef Pho :D Thanks for posting.

  • looks perfect <3!

  • A tea infuser works just as well as a cheese cloth when making a bouquet. It lets out slightly more of the oils that would normally be absorbed into the cloth. I reccomend just leaving the cinnamon stick if you do it that way since they take up the most room.

  • You should try Hot Pot. You sit at the table with a pot of boiling broth in front of you, and you can throw in anything from beef slices to whole shrimp to cow stomach. It's really good (minus the cow stomach).

  • I love the fact you've been using your moms pot.

  • I literally had to go buy pho after this, wasn't patient enough to wait and make it haha,I love it!,i'll try to make it soon, love this vid!

  • @jakatak69 Thanks! Keep up the awesome work! I love your vids.

  • anus seed

  • phoc that looks good!

  • I really love your show Jack... the thing is, though, that there's a lot of things that you forgot in your pho... and I won't even talk about the fact that your noodles aren't even cooked properly, nor the fact that they're not the right ones lol... Nice try though ;) If you wanna eat great tasting Pho, you really gotta come to Montreal (Quebec, Canada)...

  • @mylieblue or maybe, i don't know VIETNAM ?

  • @mylieblue or maybe, i don't know, VIETNAM ?

  • Jack I recommend you try a Japanese noodle called Somen. It is in your international or asian isle of most grocery stores. It is made with sea salt and whole wheat. Its nice and thin and a great healthy substitute to angel hair pasta. Very good.

  • Jack - I suggest adding beef balls as an add on. It tastes great and you just add it to the soup. Also, you put the bean sprouts at the bottom of the dish before adding the noodles in and you put the meat at the top so that the soup cooks it when it's poured in!

  • Vietnamese here. You did a great job, but some diffences I would reccomend are basically the same as wowkid. You could add Oxtail, Brisket, Flank, Tendon, or Tripe, along with others.

  • @rayword45backup love all those things. I tried to just do the basic version so people didn't turn away from PHO. I want them to try their own creations with the proteins. Thanks for the input.

  • I'm tempted to try this and let the broth simmer for a little while in the slow cooker to really get the flavors out.

  • @sacraficialangel7 If you havent had pho you would know but i'll explain his broth isn't even boiling, try putting midly hot broth on a piece of 1/4 or 1/2 inch beef, it wont cook, the beef needs to be paper thin, its rare on his pho and it looks cooked thats only because the hot water made it turn gray, put hot water from the tap thats not even boiling on a steak, it'll turn grey but stone cold in the center, so i wish that his beef was fresh if not good luck with food poisoning

  • @GarchompXX123 the meat was fully cooked in the video. Not sure what you are talking about.

  • @Megapikelet Just serve it from the pot of stock on the stove to the bowls, don't take it off the heat so it won't have a chance to cool down

  • @CerealSamurai I would have but it was easier to film this way. Sorry.

  • oh Jack... I'm sitting here with fever and a VERY soar, red, runny nose.... haven't had a proper meal in days... this looks soo good!!!

  • Would it work, if instead of combining all the ingredients in the small white bowl, i added the meat, vegtables, and herbs into the pot with the Beef Stock, cause if i cook this i will be cooking for 5 and by the time i have spooned out five it would have cooled down.

  • Do pavlova from Australia JACK!!

  • Jack - where did you get your silverware set? I have recently been shopping for some new silverware, and I like the ones you have with the hole down the middle of the handle. Thank you.

  • @CerealSamurai I got this as a wedding present from Kathy Ireland. I believe she got them from either Tiffany or Mikasa. She shops at both those places.

  • umm pho with a number after it means the style of the year not a lucky number

  • These dishes are usually extremely high in salt. May want to stay away from these dishes. Unless you can make it low in salt?

  • good job Jack ! Just a few things : perhaps you could slice the meat thinner ? I know this is easier said then done but I know there are some Asian supermarkets that sell frozen thinly sliced beef. Another thing, if you have time try to make the soup base from scratch instead of using store bought beef stock. The base will taste better but in a pinch beef stock works well :D

keep them recipes coming Jack !

    p.s. hope you're feeling better now :)

  • @azntranc3951 yes, I will. Thanks.

  • Im glad your doing this dish, 'cause im Vietnamese

  • Looks really authentic. Nice job!

  • Great job! Yeah, the meat is usually grey looking so that;s really normal.

  • That looks delish! I would suggest thinner slices of meat - I've seen thinly sliced flank steaks in the supermarkets (intended for rissoles or rolled meat dishes) which could be cut into strips which would be perfect.

  • @LisaDeeCanada I will look for it next time. Thanks.

  • Not the most traditional way. or close... But still looks really good.

  • Pho-King?

  • In the beginning i was like " the soup is not going to cook the meat XD" but then it actually happened dude it looked so yumm... Another great dish siry

  • Yes you're right about the number after the pho.

  • Your GMO-onions are just huge there in America.

  • You make me hungry at night! I really love this dish!

  • Anus seed

  • Jack, why do you always wear a cap?

  • @lduenas I am not a chef so I don't wear a chef's hat. I will not wear a net. So the proper thing to wear would be a baseball cap backwards.

  • i have the same kind of hot sauce its not that hot but has alot of garlic

  • Jack, i dont really know how to cook at all. But i love your videos so much.

  • i'm a VietNamese.actually u cook almost like the way we cook it in VN

  • Another tip. If you wanna cut the meat really thin. Keep it in the freezer for about one hour.

That way it is really firm and stiff, and easy to cut. And when your done cutting, it will already be completely soft again.

  • not the most authentic way to make Pho, but still pretty good

  • wow you guys are really freaking out about the little pink on the meat. check out foodwishes, you will be scarred for life.

  • u forgot the beef ball, with that, the pho will even taste better

  • @azianboyz3 I get beef balls, tripe, and tendon in the restaurants.

  • Slicing up the meat really thin is really tricky, I think.

I'm not that acquainted with vietnamese food, but I'm really surprised, that there's no fish sauce or lemon grass in it.

Jack, you already mentioned, that there were lots of variations of this dish. Would it be akward to use ingredients like e.g. tofu, chinese cabbage, sea food or sea weed?

  • @IsaakHunt all those ingredients are common. Iemon grass and fish sauce are also alternatives.

  • @IsaakHunt keep the meat kinda frozen to slice it

  • @IsaakHunt In my neighborhood, at least, fish sauce is a pretty common condiment for pho. Tofu, however, is evil no matter where you live. Unfermented soy causes all kinds of health problems, and no, Asians have not really been eating tons of tofu for centuries, no matter what you have been told. Tofu is bad for you. Eat chicken or beef instead.

  • i go to Pho 22 in Northridge.

  • that meat looked pinkish gray... there is no way it was cooked all the way through

  • @JustNess78 it's BEEF. It doesn't have to be cooked all the way through.

  • miss vietnam is hotter than pho

  • being vietnamese, i must say, he did a great job, somethings i would do differently such as cook the noodles in boiling water before putting it in the bowl. as well as put ox tale or other meats in the bowl. the beef was cooked when he poured the soup on.

  • @wowkid54 love ox tail.

  • Instead of tearing up the basil, put it on your palm and slap is a couple of times firmly with your other hand, this bruises the leaf and brings the basil flavour right out of the it =)

    Just a tip =)

  • i know your trying your best but this seems kinda wrong...

  • Probably one of the best pronunciations by a food blogger.

  • I love Pho, though not as much as Wonton Soup. Sadly you can only get it in the city, and I only lived there while I was in college :( so I dont get it very often, if at all. I have to make it at home.

I love making it, though! Beef and chicken bones, boiled for several hours with onion and ginger and stuff, and beef tendon! You have to braise the tendon in the oven to make it turn to gelatin, then you cut it up into tiny pieces and it's like jello noodles!

  • Also, your beef was a little on the thick side, but it's fine, it's all personal preference. Personally, I take a good steak like Rib or Strip Loin (strip is especially good because it's all one muscle without fat seams in it). It's easy to cut into thin strips, because the steak is already cut into a 3/4" piece. Not half as awkward as that big chunk you were working with.

PS: Look in your spice aisle for Chinese Five Spice. It's got the cinnamon and anise and stuff in it already.

  • What I usually eat...the meat shd be way way more thinner!!!!!!!!

  • CHINESE FOOD ?

  • @ohyayaoyao

    this is a Vietnamese dish...

  • @azntranc3951 i am requesting for chinese food :) HAHA

  • Something that I do with Pho is i take the Sriracha, Hoisin Sauce, and some Soy Sauce, and I mix them all together in a little saucer then add it to the soup. Thanks for the vid.

  • Its pronounced like your asking a question. "fuh?"=Pho

  • Dude, his butthole is gonna be killing him after all that jalapeno, and hot sauce. Can you say serious firehole?

  • your beef is way to thick

  • this looked like a very intresting dish jack, can u give us a sneak peak of what ur next dish's are going to be? im quite curious :3!

  • yeah my uncle owns a pho restaurant and his lucky number was 75. except it was named "saigon 75"

  • it looks like you cut the beef to thick, the soup is supposed to cook the meat instantly as it hits the meat.

  • @vidman454 it did cook the meat. I held up the meat in the video fully cooked.

  • @jakatak69 You still cut the meat to thick though lol.

  • 2 words, "Food Poisoning"...

  • Jack do a (Redo) That's not really how the Asains or Viatmenese cook it or make it... And I've been eating pho for about... 10 yrs? And I Am Asain. You have to boil the water, put in the onion/seasonings... Then you rinse out the noodles then take them out then when your ready put the noodles in so that the noodles are not wet when you eat it... And you are missing "Oyster sauce".

  • I want that so bad now!!

  • I don't know man, I'd have to cook that meat with the broth. That's a bit too raw for my taste.

  • How come some of them peppercorn were red?

  • @Standard420247 its mixed pepper corns. Those mixes have a bigger range of pepper flavor. I love them.

And the red/pink ones in those mixes, are actually not even pepper. Which becomes even stranger because the "real" pepper actually is red when its completely ripe, but you can get that one almost nowhere :(

  • jack u should try to make Banh Bao another vietnamese food it delicious if u make it Quang Nghai style.

  • PHO-Q?

  • @Standard420247 there is a restaurant really called that in Cali. LOL

  • @jakatak69 Get out, that's hilarious. What do they serve?

  • @jakatak69 I only said it because the pronunciation reminded me of "dazed and confused" the scene with the FAH-Q paddle.

  • @jakatak69 dang it i was thinking of that name since 2000. someone took it haha

  • I would never eat that. Meat needs to be fully cooked or get it away from me O.o

  • @TheDarkVideos I showed you guys that the meat was fully cooked. Did you not watch the end or what?

  • @jakatak69 that aint full cooked, I saw red! F-that! but hey, if you like raw meat, more power to ya brotha.

  • yes finally

  • i thought it was pronounced like foe

  • That looks nice I'll have to try it.

  • meat is bit too thick.....soup too dark.....probably wont fit my taste......but for the american maybe.....

  • where is the msg!!??

  • lol Jack you dont put the sauce into the soup it wrecks the flavour and the sauces are meant for dipping

  • Hey Jack! I'm sure you've probably already read this somewhere in the comment but it's better if you boil plain water and then dip in the pho noodle and throw in the broth right afterward. That way when you eat the noodle it's soft and cooked. I've never seen anyone simply put the noodle in warm water and eat it like that before, but hey there's a first for everything and if it taste good than it taste good. You should also look for Banh Pho Tuoi (fresh pho noodles) it's usually in a clear bag.

  • YAY!! FINALLY!!!!!! I love PHO! it's sooo PHO-king good! hehe!

  • Sorry jack, you don't use "stir-fry noodles" for Pho. You gotta go to an asian market to get the actual correct noodles. I'm disappointed in you, jack :(

  • You should of added fish sauce c:

  • Hehehe... Seed... HEH!

  • WHERE IS THE SRIRACHA SAUCE?
