I know someone who has stopped taking her anti-depressant medication because her health insurance company won't pay for it. Her mental health is deteriorating; it is very noticeable.

I am from the UK but live here. The concept of having to pay anything out of pocket for me is odd. I broke my hand here and it cost me $2500, even with insurance. Back home it would cost me $0. Whats in question is a basic level of care that I think everyone should get for free. Canada is only one of many models, and not the one I was referring to. The HR3200, in case you have not read it like many of our Senators didn't, clearly states that if you lose your health ins (through job loss, employer change to govt plan, drop from ins co, or if you do not have current coverage, it is mandated that you be on govt plan. No Choice at all in getting private health ins ever again! Including supplemental. Bye Bye Choice! I can educate you on the HR3200 bill if you like.

The public option in HR3200 you refer to is NOT government run health care.

When it comes to calculating your insurance rates, the ins. companies look at your current risk pool. This typically includes everyone you work with if you get coverage at work. This is the reason small businesses cannot get good rates if they employ someone with costly medical problems. The public option is just a way 'anyone in America (including aliens)' to be part of the same risk pool and thus get a good rate.

Over the years I have seen many people coming here from socialized medicine countries mainly for health care for a family members who could not be helped where they came from (in most instances, Europe-the bastion of socialized medicine). There is no guarantee that the public option will cure cancer either!. Your doctor could move to another city or just stop taking your insurance at any time. No guarantee you won't wait longer - neither can current insurance. We already have rationing - you get care IF you are insured and IF your insurance company approves the procedure. No guarantee you won't loose current insurance - guarantee you will if you loose your job. Gov Health care means somebody is accountable.
