@Anniesmycat it's a 231 cubic inch v6 3.8 liter GM used that block for years and years in thousands and thousands of cars. The ONLY difference in the block that was used in the 1986 and 1987 Buick Grand National was there is a oil drain fitting in the front of the block on the passenger side for the oil return from the turbo drain line. Other then that that block was amazing what you can do with it! GM just stopped making that block only a few years ago.
@freshm9n hey stupid. Do some research before you open your mouth and look stupid. a) turbo cars are fastest with automatic. b) The Grand National only came in an automatic. Yea.. WOW is right... try google and do a little search. You might learn something
@mustang4sho Well with these cars once of the reasons I did this was they have drive and over drive. Around the streets I'll keep the car in drive as is runs the line pressure in the trans up a little more then it being in overdrive. The 200R4 they used was the weak point. So typically when you race them or do a blast like this you'll start off in drive to keep the line pressure up in the trans for the lashing it's about to take and then push it up to overdrive when your done as I did here :)
I remember when these first came out , and they are still just as bad ass 25 years later. The turbo and exhaust note always reminded me of a city bus though. I still can't imagine how many people have pulled up next to the old GN thinking "I' got this GM POS" and wound up looking at its tail lights. If I had one, I'd never get rid of it.
@nationalcitysycho I was about 250lbs at the time of that video and I'm 6'1" so not that huge. I've lost a lot of weight since then and I'm now 190lbs
@phillyturbosix DAM HOW DID U LOSE ALL DAT WEIGHT? IT"S PRETTY HARD NOWA DAYS WITH ALL THESE ETHNIC FOODS AROUND IT"S HARD!! IM 6FT TO & I WAS 185 NOW I HIT 260 THAT Y I CAN"T BUY A GNX CUZ I FEEL PRETTY BIG IN THERE B4 I WAS JUST RITE!!....lol..
@codyboy560 lol it's a retired race car now. Just for shows and cruise. I've done my share of beating cars into the ground, blowing them up, and starting all over again. I'd rather turn the key and drive the car anywhere I want. I drove this car to Bowling Green Kentucky from Philadelphia and back. Got 24mpg with the AC on. That's out of a car that would run mid 11's at the track. You can't beat that for a 23 year old car! When you beat them into the ground you can't trust them on a long trip!
@RightHookJoker All automatic. Stick with a turbo really don't make sence. Your building boost and then when you let off the gas to shift and push the clutch in all that boost you just built blows out and you start all over again in the next gear till the next shift and it'd gone again. With automatic it's nothing but boost till the quarter mile. Just like if I race a car much faster then mine that is a stick. In the time it takes him to change gears is when I either pull away or catch right up
@phillyturbosix True to some older systems like on the GN, but that is cured with a good BOV and a lighter/modern and better sized turbo. Very little to no boost is lost between shifts. That's for a stock trans, add dog engagement + sequential shifter and clutless, almost-no-lift-shifts can be done that rival the speed of any auto. Almost no lift because you have to lift about an 8th throttle to barely unload the dogs so that they can slide appart and then grab the next gear.Works w/h-pattern to
Beautiful car man, love the sound of that spool aswell. Always liked these but ive never seen one, being from the UK, we only get clapped out old Mustangs, nice car man.
@AyeItsMike Thanks. Lots of hours into it. I was out at a show today with it. It's so nice on the street when you get some open road to just lay into it and it pushes you back in the seat. I'm a boost junkie that's for sure! :)
@AyeItsMike The guy that owns the package store/ liquor store near me has a GNX he bought it new right off the showroom floor back almost 25 years ago. Such a nice looking car in person. Only 16 thousand miles.
@AyeItsMike Thank you! I have to figure a way to really rig a mic up under the car to get that turbo sound. It turns heads everywhere when it's coming that's for sure. I had a friend of mine several cars in front of me and all he said was he knew I was behind him somewhere from the sound :) Clapped out Mustangs over there? I feel your pain! yuck!
Sorry, the car's body was built in November 1987. I bought it in late December. It was one of the last ones built. I think that's why they didn't put a cut off at 120MPH. It would kick into another gear and you had to let off on the pedal because it went faster and faster. I took it up to 170MPH because it got too scary. If you blow a tire or run over something on the road, you're toast. Ironicaly, I lost it going less than 20MPH. That's what happens when a pick up truck has an illegal bumber.
@camirocz It wasn't stock when it went 170MPH. But, before I had the work done on it, it passed 120MPH. It didn't have a cut off. It just let go after another gear kicked in and went faster and faster. The re-built turbo gave it 20% more power, but I had it set less than that because the car was old when I put the re-built turbo in. Always use the air conditioner when going fast. The fan helps cool the engine & turbo quicker. I was told to do this by GN mechanics. Helps a lot in hot climates.
I bought my Grand National brand new in November 1987. I had it for 19 years and lost it in a wreck 4 years ago. God I miss it. Just a year before the wreck, I'd had the engine and turbo rebuilt and it repainted. It looked brand new and was even faster than when I bought it due to improved technology. I see you have the same 85MPH dash as I did. I don't know why Buick put a regular Regal dash in GN's. I've read that they had a cut off at 120MPH, but mine didn't. At 120 it went faster.
While it's never been down the track I've had several people give me the seat dyno on it and it's built for mid 11's and it feel that way on the street. Maybe someday it will see some track time :)
I suggest using a UV filter and a 0.7x wide angle converter as well. My camera of choice for geneal in car use is the JVC GZ MS120. it uses solid state SD cards and with one 16GB card can get 3.5 hours of ultrafine video without interruption.
@wampa4321. 3.8L eng are good and have a lil hp alone, but what regal did to them in 87 with the GN regal made them beter. turbo GN. (270hp) GNX GN 275-280HP which was produced by McLaren/GM. They are great cars and look very good. One of my all time favorites!!! wanted one,,wanted one,,wanted one for a long time and still do!!!
@adickhausen They a turbo 3.8 V6. In 84 they were 4.1 V6 wernt that powerful, and it took them till 87 to put 270 HP and in 87 they came out with the gnx gn that put out close to 280 hp and McLaren helped make them but only for one year. In 88 they changed the hole body..eng..everything. :( But they had a few good years!! :)
@phillyturbosix then, let me say i'd be really jealous of you my man!! the thing's i'd do, even for a turbo-t, we2 we4 it doesnt matter to me. I admire you, you seem to enjoy your GN for all it's worth. i'm sure i'm not the only one to think this, but i'd love to see some more vids...any mods?
hey I love the fact that this camera catchs all the dash as well as the road in front, can you explain or do a short video on how its mounted,I would love to do this on mine,as its hard to hold a camera while you are driving,LOL.
That's the gear shift. I just shifted it from drive to over drive. Keeping it in drive gives you a little more pressure in the trans. With the crappy 200R4 trans they used you need all the help you can get to get them to shift nice and last! :)
this dude is like middle aged but he feels like a young bad ass mother fucker when he drives this car . i fuckin love this car i hope i can own one before the end of days, probly not
for real good ones pretty much the same as the sticker...can get lower the more miles it has, have seen a lot for like 35k canadian but with really really low miles
@FRANKMORRISSETTE I saw one in an auto trader a few months back not shittin you. It looked good in the picture but who really knows what condition it was in or even if it was a real GNX. I guess its possiable that the moron selling didnt know the difference
What brought back memories was the HARSH 1st to 2nd shift point that practically twisted the car and made my keychain rattle just like in this vid!!! I miss my GN. I wish I captured all of the shit I did to it.
Thanks for the comments boys! The car is a blast to drive. I'll have to do another in car for you guys. It's a basic rebuild with 50lbs injectors, hot wire kit, Walboro 340 pump, Alky injected, and some other litttle bling bling items ;) The turbo is a custom built one just for my build that's why it spools like a raped ape. If you look at that south NJ video I'm the last GN in the line up. You'll notice how fast the turbo spools up and kicks in.
Grand Nationals were known as "Vette Eaters" back in '87. The vette owners had their asses handed to them by many a Grand National/T-Type Regals. Man, they were pissed. LOL!!
yes they were! You paid all that money for a vette and a 18K Grand National blew it aweay! I had a friend buy a new one in 87 and when I saw him blow a vette away I was sold on them! :)
That's a real nice camera angle. I hope you post some more runs. In particular, I'd love to see some videos from a 1/4 mile dragstrip. If you do that, be sure to choose the righthand lane so you get the starting tree and your competitor (if he can keep up) in the field of view. Try some night shots, too.
I'm gonna put a camera in my GN and try that. Where in the back did you mount your Camcorder?...On the back deck by the 3rd brake light? I've got a few GN videos on the site, check them out sometime......Nice video you shot though.
I found a braket that mounted to the one trim screw on that trim piece in the back that holds the headliner in. One of these days I'll get around to makin more! :)
Your GN sounds bad ass man, love that spooling sound of the turbo. I remember when these cars came out in the mid 80's when I was in high school They were and still are the shit. Love those GM G-Bodies. Had a cherry '87 Olds 442 slight mods. Keep her running strong man, GM RULES!!
Thanks! The turbo was custom made for the build I did on the car. To do just that. Spool it's ass off on the streets! :) That was pound cake Van Halen! :)
Thanks! It's in the paint shop now getting painted. I can't wait to have it back. 5 coats of dark black and 6 coats of clear! Should be like black glass! :)
Well mine did that and it was the MAF. I use to have the factory one but I have the LS1 MAF with the translator now. I also replaced all the sensors on the TB like the TPS and IAC that also helped. Sometimes when you get that bog it could be any of that. Maybe try the IAC you can even take yours out and clean it just to see if it makes a difference. When these cars are running good we love them when they are runnin like shit we hate them! :)
Nice video-I just purchased a 87 GN, the first thing done was to get a cat back on for inspection and there went my dump, what dump do you recommend comming from the turbo?
That was the reason Buick stopped that engine. They were going to FWD in 1988 and had no FWD transmissions that could take that HP and torque from that 3.8L turbo. I think now there are better FWD transmissions out there so you might be able to do it. It would help having all that weight on the wheels that's for sure! Good luck with it! :)
I thought Buick stopped it because the GNX surpassed the corvette in power and such? I do know it was faster. But yes it would help a bit I think. I jus wish it were still RWD lol, I could just swap in the old gnx engine/trans...
Torque steer is bad enough in an SRT-4... Couldn't imagine trying to deal with all that torque the LC2 put's out at the front wheels. Let's just be happy with RWD like god intended eh?
Well the Buick Grand National was made for one reason.. to go straight down the road! It's your typical 80's quarter mile car. They didn't change the brakes or any other parts other then dropping in that LC2. Now the turbo Trans Am is a different story. That car has everything the Grand National wishes it had! :)
damn almost had a regal with a 355 it was pretty damn nice but my parnets said it was to much I was gonna turn it into a gnx clone with a V-8 for an extra power since I couldnt afford a turboed buick engine. but Im glad because I do get to get a 78 monte carlo its no buick but its still nice.
I had a 78 Monte back in 87. Black with red interior. Cool car! Nothing like a turbo Buick. Gets more commnets and turns more heads then any other car I ever owned. Esp. when the exhaust is open! :)
I have a camera mount I picked up at a security camera place that just mounts in one of the screw holes in the back trim. Nice and stable :) You can find all type of mounts on eBay
great camera mount, what kind is it?

i wish i had something that could run like that...how much hp were these rated at and how much does yours have?
submitaweasel 3 years ago
Well... Factory rating was 245hp, 355 TQ at the flywheel- reality was a bit more ...
a bone stock car was good for high 14s/low 13s in the 1/4, which works out to about 255hp at the wheels (14.3 ET @ 95MPH, 3800lb car)
My car runs mid 11's so you figure I'm around 450/500 ish HP. I have'nt had it checked yet but when I do I'll update this!
phillyturbosix 3 years ago
thats crazy. so with a little modding those could still beat vettes like im sure yours does.
submitaweasel 3 years ago
the grand national was discontinued because the gnx would beat the vette off the show room floor. every time
smeejayinfinti 3 years ago
Grand Nationals were known as "Vette Eaters" back in '87. The vette owners had their asses handed to them by many a Grand National/T-Type Regals. Man, they were pissed. LOL!!
SRMeadows 3 years ago
yes they were! You paid all that money for a vette and a 18K Grand National blew it aweay! I had a friend buy a new one in 87 and when I saw him blow a vette away I was sold on them! :)

Sweet car, my dad had an 84'. I was only 6, so I couldn't drive it of course. I loved the whistle of the turbo.

chudsay 3 years ago
That's a real nice GNX you got there!!! I especially loved the turbo whistle. :)
larry84988 3 years ago
That's a real nice camera angle. I hope you post some more runs. In particular, I'd love to see some videos from a 1/4 mile dragstrip. If you do that, be sure to choose the righthand lane so you get the starting tree and your competitor (if he can keep up) in the field of view. Try some night shots, too.
MrMGA 3 years ago
Sweet,
I'm gonna put a camera in my GN and try that. Where in the back did you mount your Camcorder?...On the back deck by the 3rd brake light? I've got a few GN videos on the site, check them out sometime......Nice video you shot though.
espritedecorp 3 years ago
I found a braket that mounted to the one trim screw on that trim piece in the back that holds the headliner in. One of these days I'll get around to makin more! :)

Your GN sounds bad ass man, love that spooling sound of the turbo. I remember when these cars came out in the mid 80's when I was in high school They were and still are the shit. Love those GM G-Bodies. Had a cherry '87 Olds 442 slight mods. Keep her running strong man, GM RULES!!
Rocket4Barrel 3 years ago
Nice Vid, sounds like it spooled up nicely on the street. I gotta ask, what is the song at the end?
taharmon 3 years ago
Thanks! The turbo was custom made for the build I did on the car. To do just that. Spool it's ass off on the streets! :) That was pound cake Van Halen! :)

sounds like youre running smooth as a babies ass Jimmy. Whats your secret? Mine still bogs when I hit the gas every damn time.
Jarnutt 4 years ago
Well mine did that and it was the MAF. I use to have the factory one but I have the LS1 MAF with the translator now. I also replaced all the sensors on the TB like the TPS and IAC that also helped. Sometimes when you get that bog it could be any of that. Maybe try the IAC you can even take yours out and clean it just to see if it makes a difference. When these cars are running good we love them when they are runnin like shit we hate them! :)
phillyturbosix 4 years ago
Man that sound just like a semi with a Detroit diesel engine, love those Gran National because they sound so heavy man, far out.

Nice video-I just purchased a 87 GN, the first thing done was to get a cat back on for inspection and there went my dump, what dump do you recommend comming from the turbo?
texaser 4 years ago
Very nice car. :) I'm hoping to make my 3.8 buick turbo at some point... its a FWD but I hope it to meet or exceed what a stock gnx did :)
Yaklich 4 years ago
That was the reason Buick stopped that engine. They were going to FWD in 1988 and had no FWD transmissions that could take that HP and torque from that 3.8L turbo. I think now there are better FWD transmissions out there so you might be able to do it. It would help having all that weight on the wheels that's for sure! Good luck with it! :)
phillyturbosix 4 years ago
I thought Buick stopped it because the GNX surpassed the corvette in power and such? I do know it was faster. But yes it would help a bit I think. I jus wish it were still RWD lol, I could just swap in the old gnx engine/trans...
Yaklich 4 years ago
Torque steer is bad enough in an SRT-4... Couldn't imagine trying to deal with all that torque the LC2 put's out at the front wheels. Let's just be happy with RWD like god intended eh?
DrBIeed 4 years ago
Well the Buick Grand National was made for one reason.. to go straight down the road! It's your typical 80's quarter mile car. They didn't change the brakes or any other parts other then dropping in that LC2. Now the turbo Trans Am is a different story. That car has everything the Grand National wishes it had! :)
phillyturbosix 4 years ago
damn almost had a regal with a 355 it was pretty damn nice but my parnets said it was to much I was gonna turn it into a gnx clone with a V-8 for an extra power since I couldnt afford a turboed buick engine. but Im glad because I do get to get a 78 monte carlo its no buick but its still nice.
disturbedproject 4 years ago
I had a 78 Monte back in 87. Black with red interior. Cool car! Nothing like a turbo Buick. Gets more commnets and turns more heads then any other car I ever owned. Esp. when the exhaust is open! :)
phillyturbosix 4 years ago
Your car= A beast.
How did you mount the camera in the car though?
Radwan222 4 years ago
I have a camera mount I picked up at a security camera place that just mounts in one of the screw holes in the back trim. Nice and stable :) You can find all type of mounts on eBay
