Your explanation makes some sense but that's not the case. A lot of vocalists have been doing what he does for just as long and even longer than him and their voice is still unchanged.

He CHOOSES to sing it like that for different reasons. One of them is to convince suburban kids that they too can get into "melodic death metal".

Before that, they rarely played live shows and when they did, it was in small venues mostly, and NEVER in the states before then.
