I love the L Word, but your points are spot on. The theme song is tacky and awful - I cringe every time I hear it. And yes, my biggest gripe with TLW is the amount of sex, which is on par with softcore pornography, no less. I think it enforces the idea that lesbians are just sex drones and I actually tried to find the censored version on box set but couldn't so I'm stuck skipping scenes every five minutes. And yeah, not a SINGLE butch - hardly a realistic representation of a lesbian community.

I'm not sure why you're adverse to the sex when it's pretty freaking hot and it's like the one representation of lesbian sex that isn't some ugly fake orange women with huge fake boobs and bleached hair and 2-ft. long fake nails clawing and pawing at each other while looking up expectantly at the camera for the hetero male gaze. The first time I watched The L Word was with my girlfriend (Who I had been sleeping with for over a year, so it wasn't a weird "omg, they're having sex, should we have sex?!" thing) alone in our apartment and I could barely watch the sex scenes, they made me uncomfortable! I think you're completely missing the point of the show. Firstly, it's unfortunate to admit that we are a small percentage of the overall society in which we live. Therefore, you have to take into account that a show about lesbians is never going to be a true representation as it has to appeal to the straight girl and the boyfriend sitting next to her, as well as the lesbian community.
The L word is awful! it DOES NOT accurately portray lesbians at all. being a gay woman in this world is extremely difficult across the fucking board!!

I like The L Word mostly because I can relate to some of the stuff in the show like the whole deal on how difficult it is to come out to your parents and what not. I also find the plot lines pretty easy to get hooked on, theres some pretty funny scenes, and some of the actresses are very attractive (Jennifer Beals, Erin Daniels, Rachel Shelley, etc..)

I had never seen the L word (I never watch tv) but my girlfriend had the first season on dvd and I was so excited to watch it! So it was pretty disapointing when I got through a few episodes and realized there are NO BUTCHES on this show. No eye candy for me. So sad!

i think you dont watch the show for the most superficial reasons ever.. The theme song, really? how hot one of the characters isnt? where its filmed? i think the show tries to show and identify with the audience in a more personal level than just where they eat... and of course the drama in their lives if intensified, its television, never seen a group of people in any show that didnt have much more problems than normal people. One of the big problems I had was in the first season when what's her name, the carpenter, forget her name, the dude outside the museum is like, "you know they got an exhibit with Jesus in a porno" and I half expected her to go in there and tell Bette how fucked up that is, but no, not one single lesbian in the show has a problem with blatant blasphemy, I mean I'm not Christian, but that's kind of like having an exhibit for how awesome Hitler was, and then defending it when Jews got angry.

In the show's defense, it would be pretty hard to make a tv show whose entire raison d'etre was to Be About Lesbians which DIDN'T leave a substantial number of lesbians feeling completely misrepresented- not all of us live in LA, are part of a 'scene' or sleep with about 20 people per week, but then the same is true of how (in)accurately teenage life is evoked by shows like the OC or One Tree Hill; kind of wish fulfillement going on.
The L Word is way to unrealistic for me to enjoy and embrace. I'd love it if a more sophisticated lesbian show were to be developed. Thanks for sharing your point of view.

I don't have Showtime but I try to watch it on the internet. I know it's a bit unrealistic, but that's how shows are sometimes, they send you into a fantasy world, A SEXY ONE I MIGHT ADD.

I am a QAF fan and wandered over to the L Word. Its okay, I also think they bring in and take away characters way to quickly and frequently. That in combination with the MANY story arcs makes the show seem convoluted sometimes. But i still think it is pretty good. I like the raw explict edgy(ness) of showtime so I like the show

I don't watch L-Word because it's about lesbians. When there's a show about genderqueer dykes (where the femmes can be chubby, pierced, tattooed, and finishing their Women's Studies MA while working as baristas, real butches actually exist, trans people are realistic and the show deals with issues important to those communities) then I'll watch. And buy the DVD. And join a fan club.
I used to watch it, but I stopped after I didn't appreciate the way they portray the "trans" guy on it. It really pissed me off, plus I went on a message board for the L Word online and so many lesbians are prejudice and against transgenders and this show is just promoting more confusion. I think you're completely missing the point of the show. Firstly, it's unfortunate to admit that we are a small percentage of the overall society in which we live. Therefore, you have to take into account that a show about lesbians is never going to be a true representation as it has to appeal to the straight girl and the boyfriend sitting next to her, as well as the lesbian community.

I like The L Word mostly because I can relate to some of the stuff in the show like the whole deal on how difficult it is to come out to your parents and what not. I also find the plot lines pretty easy to get hooked on, theres some pretty funny scenes, and some of the actresses are very attractive (Jennifer Beals, Erin Daniels, Rachel Shelley, etc..)

I had never seen the L word (I never watch tv) but my girlfriend had the first season on dvd and I was so excited to watch it! So it was pretty disapointing when I got through a few episodes and realized there are NO BUTCHES on this show. No eye candy for me. So sad!

Completely understandable about The L Word thing. I don't have Showtime either so I'm stuck watching the DVDs... Some episodes suck with all the drama. And I'm femme but I still don't like Moira/Max. i think you dont watch the show for the most superficial reasons ever.. The theme song, really? how hot one of the characters isnt? where its filmed? i think the show tries to show and identify with the audience in a more personal level than just where they eat... and of course the drama in their lives if intensified, its television, never seen a group of people in any show that didnt have much more problems than normal people. One of the big problems I had was in the first season when what's her name, the carpenter, forget her name, the dude outside the museum is like, "you know they got an exhibit with Jesus in a porno" and I half expected her to go in there and tell Bette how fucked up that is, but no, not one single lesbian in the show has a problem with blatant blasphemy, I mean I'm not Christian, but that's kind of like having an exhibit for how awesome Hitler was, and then defending it when Jews got angry.

In the show's defense, it would be pretty hard to make a tv show whose entire raison d'etre was to Be About Lesbians which DIDN'T leave a substantial number of lesbians feeling completely misrepresented- not all of us live in LA, are part of a 'scene' or sleep with about 20 people per week, but then the same is true of how (in)accurately teenage life is evoked by shows like the OC or One Tree Hill; kind of wish fulfillement going on.

I agree about Pam & Cybil, not hot. I kinda like the theme song, it grew on me. I like the cussing and it is not that bad. I kinda talk like that but its from QAF as a teenager, lol! I am a QAF fan and wandered over to the L Word. Its okay, I also think they bring in and take away characters way to quickly and frequently. That in combination with the MANY story arcs makes the show seem convoluted sometimes. But i still think it is pretty good. I like the raw explict edgy(ness) of showtime so I like the show

When there's a show about genderqueer dykes (where the femmes can be chubby, pierced, tattooed, and finishing their Women's Studies MA while working as baristas, real butches actually exist, trans people are realistic and the show deals with issues important to those communities) then I'll watch. I do agree with you. It IS too much sex,that's why I buy it on dvd and see it in my room,alone. :P They don't curse that much, I guess,or maybe I curse way too much :P Matter of opinion,I suppose.
MaxMoira is an annoying character. I honestly think they made the chara so annoying,so the watchers would be provoked,and discuss it. I don't mind Pam Grier,she's kinda hot. Sheperd,well,isnt. :P I want more butch girls in the show! I guess they don't have butch girls as main chara's >>ToBeContinued>>

4) That didn't really bother me at all. Moria's charactor always was really straight foward with being a guy, so I guess they just wanted to show it.
3) Too much drama? Well What the hell do you expect? Its a drama based TV show! What fun would it be if they were just living normal boring lives? They want to make it interesting. As all tv shows do.
2)That whole "She's such a Shane" thingy probably started as some in-joke, no harm there.

7)A lot of TV shows are based in LA, and non of them are that realistic. Of course they have to make it suit the story line more.
