@stelbl At least in my opinion, it is, but it is also a bit more difficult to maintain. With sand, the fish droppings will stay on the top, and they will be easier to target when doing a water vacuum, but I've always found that vacuuming up the dropping without getting a chunk of sand never works. It's really up to you! I think the look well outweighs the cleaning responsibilities.
You should check you facts before posting false info online. A 48"x18"x24"tall is a 90 gallon tank. You can go straight to All-Glass aquariums website and check the specs for yourself if you'd like. A 75G is the exact same dimensions as a 55G only it's 18" deep instead of 13" like the 55g is.
@jkulysses Excuse me for my false measurements, you are correct. Also on your opinion which is more efficient; a 75 gallon aquarium or a 90 gallon aquarium?
@XXGOLDENXXDRAGONXX It's all good and my last post seemed kind of dickish after I reread it sorry about that. I can't really think of anything that would be more "efficient" about a 90g over a 75g. Same footprint so you really can't get any bigger fish than you can in a 75g. If I was buying new I'd get a 75g over a 90g. I have a 90g but got a smoking deal on it off craigslist and the extra height can look a little nicer if your trying to grow some taller plants etc.

the whole reason i thought this aquarium was no where near 90 gallons was because of the log ornament you have. i have both the small one and the large one and i thought the one you have is the small one but now that i look again i see its the large one. hahahaaha sorry i doubted you :P
does your pleco do alright with sand i was thinking of getting one of the smaller ones for my 25 gal and i have sand substrate in it. Id be puttin him with some guppis ...do you what are good tank mates for guppies
@creamsoda72 He did great with the sand. I think it helped that I had a huge tank. Just make sure that when you put in your tank mates for the guppies that the other fish have a mild disposition. Maybe rainbow tetras?
@TeRroRSqUaD20 The "waste" sits on top of the sand, so while you are using a snake/water vacuum, a bit of the sand will come with it. However, since everything you are trying to pick up is already on the surface, you should be able to scoop with ease!
I just set up a ten gallon tank. Im going to let it cycle for 3-4 weeks then im gonna add 1-2 altum angelfish and a shoal of neon tetras(4-6). If anyone wants to see the progress so far just check out my video =]
planting a tank can be annoying and time consuming. however, once it is done it pays for itself in labor. i don't have to clean my tank as often as when there was just inert sand and fake decor. plants eat up waste material and provide a vehicle or medium for a self containing eco system. they will also enhance the quality of your fish's life. i noticed an immediate change in my fish's behavior when i switched out to a planted tank as opposed to a plastic/inert set up.
if u have freshwater im rying to make my tank look natural. i had black gravel but now im thinking of getting like a natural looking substarte. like sand gravel. i have bog wood in there with a lot of plants but i dont no if my plants will anchor into the sand i really like it. will it look natural.
It is a freshwater tank, but unfortunately, I never tried to get real plants to anchor in the sand substrate (I had fake plants due to the Oscar). I believe it will look natural if you can get it to anchor. Good luck!
its a nice tank. about how big is your oscar? I'm trying to set up a 90 gallon of my own (48x18x25) do you think an oscar would be happy in a tank that size?
The oscar in this vid was about 3-5 inches or so. By the time I transferred him, he was about 6 or 7 inches. That size tank would make the oscar quite happy if he's by himself!
Look guys, I'm tired of having to tell people this. I took a tape measure to this thing, and did some calculations of my own using several variations of volume calculation. This is a 90 gallon. I own a 29 gallon (not that much smaller then a 40), and I can carry it by myself without much difficulty. This tank needed 2 people and was incredibly difficult to move. It's a 90 gallon. Trust me.
Fairy dust! Hehe no seriously, just a lot of hard work. Unfortunately, this tank had to be shut down, but when it was up, it was a blast to have. I'll be setting another one up eventually.
Heh that's because the perspective is off. I took exact measurements and calculated the volume myself, as well as looking up on fish tank websites. It seems smaller, but it's a 90!
I bought it at a local store, like a Sears (it's been a while so I don't quite remember where), for really cheap. It's playground sand that has been prewashed. Otherwise, thats it.
as long as you have a tank big enough, and you raised them together, it should be ok. oscars have eyes larger than their stomachs, and will eat anything they can fit in their mouth. That being said, if they were raised together, they should leave each other alone.
I would say go for what you want! I would have loved to have a salt water aquarium, but for me, I didn't have the time. Lionfish look really cool, and I love the tang fish.
Well of course, but if you can cope with the more rigorous maintenance of a saltwater tank, 9 times out of 10 it pays off much more than a fresh water tank in beauty
It may pay off, but what if he's a beginner? He can figure out what can work and won't work with freshwater and gradually learn about saltwater once he has figured out about freshwater.
Really though, it's up to you dgsk8ter. If you know your stuff, go for whatever you will enjoy the most. There are hundreds of beautiful species of fish ot there. Just have fun and enjoy!
nice tank..im gettin a new tank this summer cuz my frontosa got too big for my 55 im probably gonna go wit the 90 gallon cuz i like how its the same size as the 75 but higher... do u think thats good???
They're artificial. Oscars would destroy real plants. They like to rearrange their tank from time to time, and this one was no exception! Even the pieces of wood would be moved every so often.
sorry for the delay in the response. if i remember correctly, i used approximately 20-30 lbs of playground sand that has been prewashed. as long as it's been prewashed, you are golden for putting it in your tank!
i no the pefect fish for this tank. a clown knife or an african knife. they wouldn't eat your other fish and the 2 knife fish both get a little bigger than the oscar and have the same appetite for live/meaty foods. the clown knife gets UP TO 18 inches and the african knife gets UP TO 12 inches. if your oscar tries to eat them(which he probably won't)these fish can fight back if the oscar agitates them enough. you should seriously look into this fish because they are awesome.
It's 4 feet long, so 48 inches. Most people usually say that it's only good for one oscar and maybe some other fish, but I'm sure that you can get away with 2, but no more. You have to be careful that they don't kill each other, and if they are a mating pair, take care of the offspring. Just be careful when you say their "whole life". Heh, they get to be pretty old.
What types of media do you use in your filter? I use the Rena XP3 for my 75g cichlid tank, basically the same fish as you =), and I have so much room for media but I have no idea what to use, I hear if the tank has gravek ceramic rings are a waste, is that true? Thanks in advance for your help, and awesome tank.
To tell the honest truth, at the moment I don't use anything beyond the standard biowheel, carbon inserts, and an ungergravel filter. This particular video is old, but the filter in this video is just a simple canister filter with carbon and mesh inserts with a biowheel. Nothing else is needed on my tank, aside from cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning. The oscar poops like it's nobody's business!
there are certain types of water vacuums called pythons. you can use one of these. the poop will stay right on top of the sand, so it's very easy to clean, and very easy to spot. you also have to clean more often to keep it clean of any poop you don't want
I actually just have the one marineland 350 with a biofilter attachment. It kept it sparkling clean until it broke (it was older and needed maintenance). If you have the two filters, I say put both of them on. I also have a 55 gallon tank with 2 powerhead filters and an undergravel filter. Never hurts to have a few extra filters.
thanks for the advise, the only reason im puting 2 is because i got both the marineland 350's for free....i was ready to put it in when i though, maybe its bad for the water and the fish if there is 2... but you have a really nice setup and i hope your advise works out. thanks.
all you have to do is get playground sand that has been precleaned. thats pretty much about it! some people get live sand. i just got precleaned sand and never had problems
this is definitely a 90. i did the measurements on it. it's a lot wider than it looks. i have a 55 as well, and when you compare them, you can see the immediate difference
Your tank looks awesome. So do your fish they all seem very happy. I'm getting a 55 gallon soon and it will sorta look like this. I love using sand instead of gravel to. Looks alot better.
