Sometimes you buy a lot of ram, just because you can, and maybe because your a bit of a nerd. My i7 has 24gb, now i do use it for modeling, and textures easily use 24 gb, so i'm about to upgrade. But instead of using my lovely SSD disk for games like battlefield 3, why not place the hole game on a ramdisk instead. My ramdisk is 16gb, so I have 8gb left for windows and the game's memory usage. That's how you load the game fast! However a ramdisk is reset when power is lost, so you have to reload.
@nevermind89pwnz If you don't over-clock it, it'll be fine. Maybe he isn't a power user? His PC will be fast and probably won't overheat in its lifetime.
@ReScaping than it's just cpu overkill, if he's not poweruser he should have bought i5 or i3 this is just ridiculous. 400$ cpu you can afford 30$ heasink
@ReScaping I hear what you're saying it just doesnt seem right. I dont know maybe it's general impression he left with his components sitting on a table (like entusiast) and then you see stock cooler :)
waste of ram if your not into mega tasking. tsk tsk. pitiful psychos.
512kb<1gb<2gb<4gb=8gb=16gb=24gb. Most of the effects are highly psychological. What's making a computer more faster is the processor, mobo, and ssd. RAM is random access memory, used to store data while in use instead of fetching it from the HDD (which is slower).
Is this really that unusual? I've seen 32GBs of DDR3 with a core i7 in a laptop. Question is, have you ever even used 50% of your RAM in one instance? Probably not, now you're just wasting money.
I'd rather have spent the money on a RAID 0 SSD raid, disk IO can be killer, where as if you're playing a commercially done game it will typically use VRAM, so you should be more focused on your graphics card, and disk IO is the #1 performance bottleneck.
I have 24GB.. Soon i will buy another 24GB, so i my computer will have 48GB of ddr3.. :) Even that 24 gigs is FAR TOO LITTLE amount.. x) 23GB has been in use and that can be easily exceeded.. =P
@vokajko11 Uhh he won't be having any dust ;) Dust comes into ur computer when there is more exhaust then intake :) Has something to do with the pressure inside
hmm you used the stock cpu fan? you have what looks like a mtax mobo? which can only really hold integrated stuff which is barely upgradable, and windows will read 12gb but wont use it all hahahaha waste of money 6 gb would have been enough!
"Only 12gb?" This video is dated 17th Jan 2009, It's been over 2 and a half years lol. You can get 48GB from 12x4GB standard desktop ddr3 memory in dual socket 1366 LGA motherboards. I have 12GB too, over a year ago, but from 3x4GB DDR3.
@SynysterCondom Well it asks you multiple times if you'd like to go through with opening files, like wtf? it also errors and renders your computer useless due to using too much memory.
Windows 7 is a cleaner and error-free(as far as I'm aware) version of Vista.
@PyreManiacz well the UAC thing is so random .exe don't run without your permission, its for added security which you can take off if you dislike it. After 5 years of using Vista, I haven't had a single major error issue. People think Vista is a memory hog but it's not, SuperFetch utilizes your unused RAM as a cache to speed up your system, having lots of free memory is a waste. Once you start a memory heavy application, however, Vista will release that memory instantly.
@thaoval123 not true. some applications do use as much as 12GB. i have an app that is ab out 600kB and i can make it use all my RAM in about 10 seconds. Yeah, but he's not thinking of a youtube server >.> I am pretty sure 12 Gb would be just fine for a web server. Or 1000 xD

Solid man. most x58 boards can have up to 24 gbs of memory (why anyone would use that much is still beyond me) you could use a new heatsink though. what speed are you running those DIMM's at?
