My understanding is that this trip only went as far as Yoe PA because the loco could not negotiate the curves southeast of that point. All the way to Delta (or even Whiteford MD where the rails ended at the time) would have been great!! There once was an excursion that did go that far, then went down the Peach Bottom Branch! Would love to see that!
Anyone out there got any "classic (pre-1954)" Ma & Pa?? This line just had to have drawn media attention, at least from the local TV stations (especially when its last passenger run was announced in August 1954). But I haven't yet seen any! As incredibly popular as this charismatic line was somebody has to have footage from its original run! The earliest photos/videos I have are mid 1970s (which I'll eventually post, along with a video of current operations in Muddy Creek Forks PA).
I bought a copy of "Memories Of Steam In The Northeast- lll" by MARK I VIDEO
copyright 2000 that contains a pre WW2 fantrip on the Ma & Pa. It begins on the PRR
in Perryville, takes the PRR to Baltimore, then Ma & Pa to York. It is grainy but oh so rare. Great shots of Glen Arm, Baldwin, Fallston, Gross Trestle, etc.
What type (shop) and wheel configuration is this locomotive? Does anyone know the bloke who is oiling her up or any of the other people shown? Also at the load scene at about 1:08 or 1:09 you see number 537 on the side of one passenger car. Does that help to identify it? Also is 1286 a unique steam engine number? So this only went as far as Yoe right? Sorry for all the questions. This is a great historic video.
1286 is one of about 7 surviving ex_CPR G5d Pacifics (4-6-2's). She, and sister 1238, were owned by George Hart, at the time. Today they are sitting in Virginia, unused, with a big price tag on them. The are still operable with a little servicing. Hart also owned ex-CPR 4-6-0, #972, now at Strasburg, dismantled, and a Reading tank engine, now at RMPA, indoors and displayed.
@PRR5406 Not to mention CP #1098, almost identical to the 972, now owned by the Reading, Blue Mountain, and Northern. I really hope she runs one day.
@PRR5406 He also had two BEDT oil-fired tank engines.. his first purchases, and what he briefly used in york, pa before he got anything larger.. offhand the numbers escape me.. the RDG tank engine is the 1251.
Without seeing the exact numbers, it would be hard to tell. George had a collection of RDG round-roof commuter coaches (as well as a few CNJ) over the years for Railtours.. This would be the genesis of that fleet. He also shortly had a CPR Obs of some sort, which is now back in Canada.
This film was shot in the 1960's when railfan George Hart moved 1238 and 1286(the engine shown) to the Ma and Pa. They were sold to Jack Showalter, who moved them to the C&O Hot Springs branch, now known as the Virginia Central.
The MA & PA- Model Railroading in 1:1 scale! :)

I'm thinking of making a video of still photos I have of the Ma & Pa RR. Some of the stills are grainy because they were made in the 1910's.

@TheHunteroo That would be great! I was able to find a few "classic" shots on a library website but would still like to see what you might have!

This was shot sometime beteen 1965 and 1967. By the way, I "worked" for Mr. Hart on the Stewartstown for a few years. A lot of neat stories there.

Damn! Great vid and loco but I was hoping for 4 or 6 or 28 or somethin like that!

when was this shot?
nax1345 3 years ago
It's too bad this loco. was too heavy for the bridges south of Yoe. At least #972 made it to Delta and Peach Bottom.
