I somewhat agreed with you until you said the only game series to have 80% cutscenes... true, cutscenes can add to a story, but there should be a balance of story and gameplay that go hand in hand, like Yahtzee once said.
lol sorry thats the only game that came to mind. yea i like a balance but sometimes they dont give you enough cut scenes and much to gameplay. most of the mgs series has like 60:50 from cut scenes to gameplay, but the mgs4 i think had to much cutscene. but i was okay with it because i love the story.

If your reviewing a game, more than likely the veiwer hasnt played it. that guy doesnt even really know what the game is like. so, why not say: the gameplay is just like GOW2, or COD 4. that makes the guy understand, "oh its a shooter cool i want that/ i hate that crap D:"
there's nothing wrong imo, with referencing one game to another, esp ones in the same genre, it's almost unavoidable... esp games like infamous and prototype, while there games from 2 different devolpers, the have simillair gameplay and themes within those games...
thats an understatement. my friend had both of them he was playin one, i left for maybe three minutes, came back and he was plain the other one but i didnt know until he told me.
hes referancing other games because it makes it easier for you(the viewer) to understand the mechanic of the game he referances and since games usually use mechanics from earlier games they usually have to think back on the game that started doing that to see if their doing it right or if they failed or they built on the idea .you'll be hard pressed to find anything truely original in this day in time.
Despite the title, I don't think Adam was arguing that game reviews need reference, but, instead, other reviewers shouldn't be dismissive when games are compared to their predecessors.
last note: simple minded reviews of these games...where he compares them endlessly to other games...is a square peg in the jinga cube that summaries the reason for lack of creativity in video games. That was a very complicated way to say that you need to reference other games in a game review so that the viewer will be able to relate to what you are talking about without having played the game you are reviewing.

Intelligence is not explaining a complex item in complex terms but is to render that which is complex simple to all...this is a task he failed miserably at and if you notice he still did not prove his assertion that referencing another game in a review, does not render the review invalid...he just restated his position and ended with a loosely related analogy.
Given his proffesion, it is expected that he may use terminology which most of us may be unfamiliar with. Your right that he should probably use simpler terms to "render that which is complex simple to all." I personally didn't have too much difficulty understanding a majority of what he was trying to tell us. gameplay is tricky and has a long history that is based on a trial and error basis. These are not just reviews for the player, but reviews for the creators.

so so true. Everything we perceive as what we know is influenced on what other people said or did. Its hard to find an FPS that isn't being compared to Halo or CoD, or an MMO that isn't being compared to WoW. The only games i can think of thats never been compared to another would have to be Psychonauts, which was rather unique in its gameplay and story, or Smash bros meele, which was a unique brawler.
Ico was another game that I don't think was ever compared to anything. One of my personal faves. But it really is true what he's saying. It's hard these days to find a road not traveled before especialy in the gaming world. You can only see that others have gone down the same road as before, only a bit further...if that made any sense as a metaphor.
At the end there, he was talking about, weather he knew it or not, the 'Anthropic Principle' which basically states 'I see, therefor the Universe exists'.

Yes, the multiplayer did suck. I wasn't talking about the multiplayer. The developer (Starbreeze, I believe) created an amazing story, and did suck again with the Chronicles of Riddick games.

If your reviewing a game, more than likely the veiwer hasnt played it. that guy doesnt even really know what the game is like. so, why not say: the gameplay is just like GOW2, or COD 4. that makes the guy understand, "oh its a shooter cool i want that/ i hate that crap D:"

there's nothing wrong imo, with referencing one game to another, esp ones in the same genre, it's almost unavoidable... esp games like infamous and prototype, while there games from 2 different devolpers, the have simillair gameplay and themes within those games...

hes referancing other games because it makes it easier for you(the viewer) to understand the mechanic of the game he referances and since games usually use mechanics from earlier games they usually have to think back on the game that started doing that to see if their doing it right or if they failed or they built on the idea .you'll be hard pressed to find anything truely original in this day in time.

last note: simple minded reviews of these games...where he compares them endlessly to other games...is a square peg in the jinga cube that summaries the reason for lack of creativity in video games. If a developer thinks or assumes that dumbasses like Adam won't get what they are trying to do because no other game is like it...it either won't get funded or it will get dumbed down.

What better way to promote a game than to take a game that has a lot of hype surrounding it and compare it with an obscure game that no one could give a damn about?
ex if i said Mario Bros is a shadow of a game compare to SquareDongs. You'd say well I gotta play SquareDongs if Adam says it's better.

Given his proffesion, it is expected that he may use terminology which most of us may be unfamiliar with. Your right that he should probably use simpler terms to "render that which is complex simple to all." I personally didn't have too much difficulty understanding a majority of what he was trying to tell us. What bothered me the most was his use of french terms which I feel we shouldn't be expected to understand. Maybe he's trying to prove himself as a valid nerd which I can totaly understand.

He actually did support his position that games need to be in a frame of reference with other games fairly well, though he didn't explain the entire industry has become extremely self-referential and games that go out of their way to be different than everything before them have next to no chance of ever being published.
And intelligence does not convey the ability to render the complex simple, it is the ability to understand and connect ideas together, not to communicate to those that can't.

Sessler said it, but I'm sure this was a collabrative work. I agree completely. You can't critique a game's (game-play) if you do not have some kind of reference or comparison to a similar product.
if you review a game strictly on art. then you can just say things like "the environments are atronomical!" and use just describing words.
gameplay is tricky and has a long history that is based on a trial and error basis. These are not just reviews for the player, but reviews for the creators.

so so true. Everything we perceive as what we know is influenced on what other people said or did. Its hard to find an FPS that isn't being compared to Halo or CoD, or an MMO that isn't being compared to WoW. The only games i can think of thats never been compared to another would have to be Psychonauts, which was rather unique in its gameplay and story, or Smash bros meele, which was a unique brawler.

Ico was another game that I don't think was ever compared to anything. One of my personal faves. But it really is true what he's saying. It's hard these days to find a road not traveled before especialy in the gaming world. You can only see that others have gone down the same road as before, only a bit further...if that made any sense as a metaphor.

not true, some stories a good enough to warrant an actual sequel, like dead rising. dead rising is a game where, no matter what ending you get, this game has to continue outside of this one game. why? because the plague does have to inevitably spread... which is where dead rising 2 comes in.

and I bought and played GTA4 hoping that it would be as good as GTA3 or at least in the san andreas range only to be horribly dissapointed in the metal gear cut scene length of tutorials that I had to get through just to go on a date that I was supposed to anyways. it pains me to no end to see that the games of my youth (legend of zelda and super mario 3) were more challenging and less complex then modern games, and by complex I mean bogged down by so much garbage that it makes it unplayable.

um, I bought a ps3 and my GTA4 with my own my at 22 asswipe, I felt ripped off for wasting $50 on that when I could have invested it just that month and gained a ridiculous profit from it.... I did however love it when my wife of over a year and a half bought me little big planet for christmas, as it is one of the few modern games to actually try and be something new and interesting, and not bog us down with a crap load tutorials if we don't want it to. so dude, seriously go get a job and a life
