  • What was that? Sicker than sick! in a good way. blown away

  • Marcus Printup....I met him at Ellington last year. He plays 4th trumpet for LCJO. Cool cat.

  • that little dude sure stood his ground.

  • @zviato looks like it, his stick style is similar, for sure...sounds alike too,

    could very well be

  • What a headache!

  • 2:38 Birks Works!!

  • 10 People wish they could play trumpet

  • 2:07 to 2:17 is soooooooooo killin.

  • It appears Sean won that battle, although I've seen Marcus win those duels as well. The real winner, of course, was the audience.

  • Dude I want to play like them :(

  • Jason Marsalis at the drums ?

  • SEAN JUST WAXED MARCUS :/

  • I went to school with Sean. I was an undergraduate while he was in the masters program. We were in the first jazz ensemble together. I had the incredible privilege of getting to see him play every week in downtown New Brunswick at a place called the North Star. My buddy has some mini-disc recordings that need to be found! Like then and certainly right now after watching this I have to say, I don't know why I continue to still try and play jazz!

  • that`s the fuckin' best!!!

  • this is sick XD

  • Yea, sean, he's the bomb!

  • god dammmmit

  • sean jones is a monster!

  • I love the video this is a old school jam session full of fun .

  • :o! < Expression on my face right now

  • quoting "Four" at 2:55

  • a whole lot of notes... where's the swingin' though?

  • sick guys!! iv played trumpet for twelve years and im in 12 grade, and love jazz. I long to be this good!! XD

  • I think the guy on the left won.

  • LOL...I found myself clapping at the end of the performance, while in my own home, in my room, on my computer. I was empressed.

  • Woody Shaw @ 1:34

  • i could listen to 0:42 more than a thousand times, this phrase is so logical

  • @jazzanova68 my words exactly... smooth....

  • fantastic!

  • man this dude in wynton is just outrageous!

  • AMAZIIIING!!!....

  • that big was just amazing

  • that bigger guy is like singing with his trumpet!! xDD

but they both absolutely killed it! :D

I wonder wich instruments they play... i play a Getzen 300 series... not the best thing on the market but a classic i think... :D

  • @xplorerk0rina who cares about what you are playing?

  • mind = blown

  • Caught Sean last night with Bobby Watson at the Blue Room in Kansas City... they absolutely killed it

  • Is that marcus prinup from the lincoln center orch?

  • @samtrumpdotnet. Yes it is. Sounding nice as usual.

  • they're both in the band

  • burning....wow

  • Awesome!!!!

  • 0:33 to 0:40 is insane!!

  • c'est très moche.

  • Most people wont even hear how deep some of the stuff they just did is

  • mind blown

  • I remember those great sessions at Bliss Hall with Sean and Alton. They are absolutely ridiculous together. Hey Sean, whatever happened to Brian Connell the saxist? Anyway, the most important thing is that they honor The Most High with their gifts and talent. I've always said that Sean is one of the "coldest" of our generation. Keep it up Sean.

  • 2:08 to 2:16 is the the TASTIEST lick i have EVER heard. PERIOD.

  • muito show! e a citação de "Four" (Miles Davis) feita por Sean Jones foi fantástica! =D

  • I just saw Sean in person tonight. This guy is amazing.

  • hey kirk, you know nothing about music. shut up

  • I like the short guy's lines better than those of the big guy.

  • yo man open ur ears and shut ur mouth, they both playin so much language i bet u dont even kno wat ur listenin to

  • thats the realest shit ive heard in a long time

  • @kirk7524875248

    LoL .....noob idiot :p

  • woah both of them are great

  • theyre both amazing, but sean takes the trophy. period.

  • so amzing the guy ion the right is so talented but just can't keep up as good as he is .. Sean Jones is the real deal .. because I cried the first time I hear dhim on the radio and had NO CLUE his name until the DJ said his name after the song was over .. guy is soemthign else and really cool we can all share this on youtube

  • 0:32-0:49 is fucking tasty

  • truly a beautiful deonstration of artistic freedom and expression. huge props to both players

  • insanity .. the talent is so in your face EVERYBODY in the room knows ..WHOA!

  • Hey All,

Great Improv , great playin, check out Trombone Shorty (I think the name is correct) and Wynton Marsalis duel it out, very hott!

It takes talent and passion to play and keep it in the groove! A lot a great Self Expression and passion!

  • Wow love the Four and Birks Works quotes!

  • damn sean

  • all the time the same:-P

  • Are you Kidding?

    These guys can play.

Does siting at you computer and poking fun at trumpet players make you feel good?

I can speak for everyone else on youtube when I say that no one gives a flying crap about you or your playing after that stupid comment.

I'd really like to hear you play better than Sean Jones.

Please post some videos of yourself playing better than these guys. Please.

  • I can't beat Wynton Marsalis in a classical trumpet battle, so I believe you. Pifff lol. hahaha

  • Man shut the fuck up. How is it that you say these two weren't in the chord structure, but they manage to be able to join Wynton Marsalis in his LCJO? That's right, shut the fuck up boy. Listen and learn. Maybe one day you can learn something.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

    You are an idiot.

  • piano player is also in lincoln center

  • his name's dan nimmer

  • Both of them are just ridiculous. I saw both of them play at the Essentially Ellington festival in new york. Sean Jones played a solo on How High the Moon . My jaw dropped so much it hit the floor. Marcus printup battled wynton marsalis and it was the most ridiculous battle i have ever seen

  • This is what its all about. The exchange of ideas.

  • ???

  • sean slays printup. Jones comes up with more of his own ideas. printup just echoes them. not saying he's a bad player, but jones wins. he looks like hes having a ton of fun

  • My unimportant but valid opinion is that they can go ahead and show off. Trumpeters have played on the tradition of duking it out ever since King Oliver in new Orleans... Plus I can't do that... and it sure looks like fun!

  • great example of trumpet ego. this is what we all deal with.

  • Must get a bucket of ice for my lips........and I am just watching!!!!

  • i love the trumpet i can play two Cs above the staff but after the first 30 seconds of they were only makeing noise

  • 2:13 to 2:16 is way too freaking cool.

  • what song are they playing?

  • "Speak Low"

  • They are just blowing, give me a break...Marcus hung pretty well, but Sean is a beast

  • this is so funny.

  • Indeed it is. I don't understand why it is necessary for everyone on this open forum to jump on the bandwagon... Everyone here is entitled to their own opinion.. Secondly, I don't understand why anyone else would take it so personally when comments are being made about another person. Lastly, drhmbyrd's comments though immature was brilliant...

  • i love seans style

  • Now I know this is suppose to be a battle but there ideas are not coherent.. It's kind of a pissing contest without the most important thing.. Where's the piss.... I'd rather hear Magnarelli trade with Rotundi, Pelt trade with Payton, or Ryan Kisor trade with Payton.. Cats with substance....Beware of what people make you think you should dig... Think for yourselves herd of sheep....

  • i think they coexist quite well.

  • 2:18 - 2:26 : coherent idea

not to mention 2:18 - end. is a coherent idea depending on your taste.

i don't think you watched the entire film.

  • what if for 36 years youve had it all wrong and you are the one on the wrong side ... doesn't seem to have gotten you very far youre sitting on youtube talking shit . these cats are making a living and playing great music . might want to try the same . you're also stupid by the way because your doing the exact thing you're telling people to watch out for .... " Beware of what people make you think you should dig... Think for yourselves herd of sheep.... " you're sad hope you life gets better !

  • You're ignorant. It doesn't matter to me how long you've been "around".. Al I did was state an observation and form an opinion. For you to take it so personally only shows me that you've pulled out the knee pads not just for one of these guys but both.. Make sure you open wide asshole

  • While it's true they were a bit liberal with the changes at times, and their ideas were somewhat repetitive, they were certainly coherent. Besides, jazz is all about fun -- it doesn't always have to be perfect pitch, stringing together complex ideas, and snobbery (in your case). Most jazz musicians aren't in it for money, they're in it for the music. These guys are clearly having a great time, the crowd is enjoying it, and there's absolutely no reason for you not to enjoy it too.

  • wow!

  • first off no one won they were doing what jazz people do, play and have fun. Now if they had to compete sean jones did win. marcus is bad as hell trust me. i've heard his play some very nice licks. i love jazz.

  • Sean Jones won

  • Sean Jones is the man! Props to he other player too who held his own.

  • The other player is Marcus Printup. He's been swingin with Lincoln Center for over 15 years now. Check out some of his stuff. He's a dangerous man with that horn

  • sean jones is the man....check out his roots cd..im a bass player but damn i love this cat

  • black shirt got owned

  • sean won!!!!

  • for petts sakes how high can these guys play i can only play high c on top of the measure line and iam in my second year of trumpet

  • wow only two years? i think sean has been playing for more than two years. i cant even get the highest two notes in this video and i have been playing for 5-6 years

  • if anyone could hit these notes, this wouldnt be so special. it isnt even about how high they are playing, its about the lines. even an octave down, 99 percent of trumpet players couldnt do that shit.

  • just by the way hes playing.

  • you can eell that the guy with the glasses likes dizzy

  • haha sean jones said he was really messed up during this

  • Well, I must say thanks a lot to them to let me post this video -or not complaint about it- I think this performance is very useful to have more jazz fans.

  • Funny story my Mom and I were at The JALC Concert in Minneapolis and my Mom bumped into Sean Jones without knowing who he was geese..

  • holy shit! are they improvising the whole thing? wow. i wanna know who is who....

    wow. that is absolutely amazing...

  • sean jones is in the white shirt.

  • omg i wish i could play that high and that fast lol makes me look like a total beginner lol

  • wow!

  • damn killin the shit out of it

  • omg, its crazy that they can play that high for so long

  • anyone know what tune they're jamming to?

  • speak low

  • 2:12 , DAYUM

  • anyone know what tune they're playing?

  • 0:43!!!!!!!!!!!!! zu fett

  • Sean is lead. Wynton asked him to take the part

  • Sean is the lead player, when he gets a sub (usually Brandon Lee) then Ryan plays lead and the sub plays Ryan's part.

  • Cliford Brown would be so Proud to listen to these great cats. They take the language , music and vocabulary further. this how the horn should sound man. there is not sex without intensity. at times you just need to get intense direcrly and keep it like these cats do here. WOW!!

  • Sean Jones is the lead player...first it was going to be greg gizbert, but then greg turned it down because the was in the diz alumni band, so wynton asked sean(who had already bein subbing in the band)to take full resposiblity... sean is the lead trumpet...and this is the baddest trumpet battle online, so quit argueing and enjoy this shit!!

  • specific parts that make you say that?

  • Hi is not the only player on the stage.I don`t like musicians who whant`s to showoff.

  • I`m sure that you have listen Arturo,Miles,King Oliver,Allen Vizutti,Bolden and many others.

  • how do you get the impression that he wants to show off?

  • i am completely on ariactb's side. sean jones is a great trumpet player, but here he is just playing some really high simple licks, not listening, and just running his fingers over the valves in some places

  • naw... if i am correct in the places that you say he running his fingers, he is quoting woody shaw licks. listen to some woody and tell me what you think.

  • That guy is Sean Jones. First trumpet in Wynton Marsalis's big band and professor of jazz studies at Duquesne University. I don't know what you're hearing, but he's playing beautifully.

  • just a minor correction here, he's not the lead player in wynton's band... nevertheless, it's no real big deal that he's playing high here. people who complain about his playing here are undoubtedly jealous at their own lack of range.

sean is an amazing player... forgive him for having a little bit of fun here jeez

  • He certainly is the lead trumpet player in Wynton's big band.

  • are you talking about a band other than the jazz at lincoln center orchestra? cause i saw them about a month ago over here in california, and he was not playing lead... he was killin, but not playin lead. there was some white guy playing lead the whole night and he was wailin.

  • No, I am talking about Lincoln Center. Sean is indeed lead trumpet. This, however, is not a soloist chair. The white guy you saw playing the solos is most likely Ryan Kisor.

  • whoops looks like you're right man, i just went and checked and he is lead. however, i saw the orchestra in san jose and ryan kisor was lead, sean was jazz chair and they were playing with four tpts.... that's where i based my assumption from...

nevertheless, sean is a KILLIN player haha :D

  • um, I don't know what is says on the website but I'm friends with sean and I was right there looking at there parts while they played them... Ryan is the lead guy, frickin amazing trp player too,wow

  • Sean plays lead.

  • Dude, I was sitting 2 feet behind them all 4 months ago... I was reading along as they played the music...Marcus was next to the Drummer then it was Ryan, Sean, and Wynton's sub. I was actually talking to them. What did you do? read it off the website?

  • Aside from living in Pittsburgh and knowing Sean, who told me himself, it is also on his website and the LCJO site.

  • ok, Maybe they switch off like in normal bigbands But I know what I saw and heard. And i also just checked both websites and they don't specify... so, send me the url. um, you don't play trumpet do you?

  • Talk to me via inbox if you'd like to keep discussing this. No need to take up room for those who want to discuss the video itself.

  • no, he's not. Ryan Kaiser is. not sure of that spelling but I did sit right Behind them all in rehearsal sooo...

  • 1:17... Game, Set, Match

  • Wow!!!.... It was like Super Sayian Goku vs piccilo....lol guy in white shirt won it hands down!!

  • 2:13 is the exact reason why I'm going to work harder at lip trills

  • Sure there's "competition", but it's the kind that's beneficial to all involved. It prompts both players to pull that extra something out of their bag of tricks that they might not otherwise. Let's face it, trumpet players tend to be cocky & competitive. At least in this case it makes for a great musical experience, at least IMO.

I for one don't hear a clear "winner", I just hear two very capable players going to town and playing their asses off.

  • that was kinda annoying

  • They are not "fighting". They are best buddies and both hold their own in terms of musical and trumpet ability. Anyone who says that either of them were "destroyed" or "owned" clearly does not know them.

  • Well, in fact it was not "fighting", in the original languaje I speak -spanish- we say "duelo", that I think it means "duel". So It should say "trumpets duel" or so.

It is clear they are friends, otherwise they didn't enjoy as they are.

  • Actually I know both of them, and the comment wasn't to bad mouth Marcus Printup because he is a fantastic trumpet player. As a musician that plays jazz, sometimes when you get on stage in a situation like this you get "owned" or "destroyed" by your friends that are on stage with you. All it does (at least for me) is motivate me to practice harder so that I can play better. So don't take the comment as a negative to anyone as that's not what it was meant to be.

  • Marcus Printup is a great trumpet player, but Sean Jones just destroyed him here. What amazing control of the trumpet by Sean Jones as well as musicality.

  • I could comment for any other videos, but I've lost my words on this one. They are amazing.

  • Damn is all i can say and WOW

  • hope front row got a good life coverage

  • that there put a shiver down my spine!brilliant

  • That Woody Shaw lick is sick at 1:00 and 1:33

  • That Woody Shaw lick is sick at 1:00 and 1:33

  • i feel sean doing circles around him

  • Must be Ben Wolfe on bass. Awesome

  • damn that was good

  • Great job!

  • so nasty. Every time I watch this... God, its so nasty.

  • Nothing like two jazzers trying to play high!! :)

  • What the composition it is?

  • god damn, this is amazing!

  • 0:40-0:44, wow, signature sean jones soul lick...

  • is that dan nimmer on piano?

  • it looks like it haha

  • And both of them are great players. I just discovered Sean Jones and it has truly inspired me. Thanks Sean.

  • I think the quote sean plays is "Four" by miles.

  • Freddie IS alive, sad to say his chops are not.

  • gotta love that quote by the guy in White at
