The fact that the sti has 2.5l it only means that the manufacturers are not stocking the sti to it's maximum potential. The evos on the other hand are stacked to its full power. Probably thats why you see more evos at repair shops than sti. I drove my 05 sti for three years with out having to go to a repair shop.
FYI i was more upset with the quality of my DSMs than either my WRX or STi. i would say they are one of the most reliable cars on the road. but that might be my bias and 10+ years of working as a mechanic.

evo's are tiny and weak if you take them off road something always breaks on them...the perfect example watch the 06 xgames the ONLY 2 EVOS that went in broke down, the first one the transmission went out...not suprisingly and the 2nd one it went two or three feet off the ground and landed and the whole suspension went out...all the subarus made it across the finish line and one of them even rolled over and then kept going.

This is why the time attack champion cars for europe have been...errr STis for 2 years running. That's against 1000hp mitsis btw. There's nothing smarter about a mitsi ecu. For a start no one uses a stock ecu to make 1000 hp. It's always going to be a motec or haltech, whatever, fill in as applicable etc etc.
Mitsi are good, but they're not some magic frikkin car. There are Hondas wiping the floor with everybody in my town at the mo. That will last till next week when someone else gets paid.

evo = 1000 AWHP! (AMS's evo's do it all the time... look them up if you don't believe me!)
STI = 750 BHP = even less AWHP. (atleast that's the best I've seen, you don't see many people tuning subies, they're just not worth it...)
