The Lisbon Treaty is a brilliantly concieved document that is a "self amending" treaty (Article 48) that paves the way for the most perfect of totalitarian states.

It would be hard for French or German to rule EU if 27 countries can barely agree on anything. But there is truth in Irish perspective of Treaty. Before we accept something like that, we need to make decision-making more democratic and cut down on bureaucracy that is present in Brussels.

A YES vote to a EU constitution would pass for sure only in Spain (as it already happened), Portugal, Italy, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovenia and the Baltic Countries. I don't know about Germany and Belgium but probably it wouldn't pass. Now, is it possible to conceive a European Union made up of Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy and some eastern countries? Of course not.
I consider my self to be a europhile. I truly believe in the European Integration Process and what it can represent. But of course there's another thing I believe in, which is called Democracy. Now, it is clear that the majority of people in certain countries (above all UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark) are against the Integration Process. Conceiving a European Union without these countries, that, culturally and geopolitically, are at the very core of Europe would be pointless.

I agree that the way through which european politicians are doing that is wrong but this doesn't mean that there wouldn't be more democratic, transparent and accountable ways to do that. European Integration is like Nuclear Power: if well managed it can bring about a lot of benefits. If badly-managed it can turn into a disaster.

Forcing these countries to pursue more integration through legal procedures, with the majority of the people against, would be a big mistake that can exarcebate the atmosphere. Even though I support it, I've come to understand that this process cannot continue (at least now). I can only hope that somewhen in the future Pro-European ideas will start to flourish amongst the people (not the politicians) of these countries. But I must be realist. These ideas are not present today.
Honestly, I don't believe it is a problem of democratic accountability. Even if they signed a treaty that allows the people to elect the commissioners, even if they gave more power to the eu parliament and made it more transparent, even if they made the EU the most democratic body of the planet, people (in these countries) would always vote NO because they do not want the EU. British, Irish, Dutch, Swedish and Danish do not want the EU. We've got to accept that.

I think that are other issues on which european countries should cooperate because by cooperating they can reach better results and these issues are political ones: 1) Like or not, Russia controls the energy of the entire continent. A portuguese might be different from a pole but they bought by gas from Moscow: a common foreign policy towards Russia would benefit both because Russia wouldn't even consider the individual positions of, say, Belgium or Slovenia.
2) Like it or not, all Europe is being invaded by masses of people from Africa and the Middle east. A guy from Italy and a guy from Netherlands may have different cultures, languages and tradition but it is a fact that both are under the immigration threat. Facing this threat together wouldn't be better than facing that alone?
Finally, why do I agree with the EURO? For a simple reason, not because I simply believe that the upsides of the euro will outnumber the downsides more and more in the future. The biggest percentage of EU countries trade is with other EU countries. 60% of Britain's trade is with Europe. Having the same currency stabilizes trade because companies do not have to worry about the currency of belgium devaluating against the one of Austria

Recent events prove that, given the level of interdependency of european economies, when growth slows, it slows all over europe, when inflation rises, it rises all over Europe. Individual european countries, included Britain, have no such weight that allows them to address Growth and Inflation all alone. Keynes died in 1946. Sorry.

The Central Bank England controls nothing. The size of the British economy is too small on a global scale to allow your bankers to actually control what goes on in your economy. When Keyenes (an economist that I know and admire) said those things Britain had a status in the world that today doesn't have. The United States is at the moment that only country that still can "try" (not even manage to) control its economy through its central bank.
Also individual european economies are too small and except probably for the Pound and the Mark the other currencies would end up depending on the dollar anyway. Plus you shouldn't forget that in 40 years from now there won't be even 1 european countries in the list of the world's largest economies so also the Mark and the Pound would end up losing their famous stability. The argument most people make "one interest rate cannot fit all" is wrong. I'll tell you why

In 30 years from now the level of economic dependence of the European Countries on each other will be probably equal than the level of economic dependence of EU states on each other. But it is also true that the number of common interests (economic and geopolitical ones) european countries have is huge. You would look like a fool if you were to claim that Slovakia and Hungary or Spain and France do not have the same geopolitical interests. In a globalized world, ECONOMIC and GEOPOLITICAL INTERESTS have nothing to do with the culture or the identity of people from that nation.
Slovakia, and Spain may share common interests, but they also have huge differences over their future direction they wish to take,and Britain and Ireland may have different needs,and goals to France/Germany etc the point is,in a free country,that is NOT a member of the EU,natioons can FREELY co-operate on areas where they share interests,but being EU members,means they must co-operate whether they wish to or not!
I don't want to create the United States of Europe. That just doesn't work. I would like the politicians to go and tell the people: listen there are these 5 or 6 issues on which we have common interests and therefore we have to cooperate. So we are going to sign 5 or 6 NATO-style treaties that are related only on that particular issue without trying to constitutionalize Europe.
The reason why you british people (that's not a criticism, it's an opinion) have problems to understan the concept of common interests within the european continent is because you still think of the world as if we were in 1920, where actually Europe was the centre of the planet and there were powers competing against each other. That's not the case today. The European Continent is going to become less and less relevant in the years to come
no the main reason Britain is anti-EU is The EU,as well as controlling our borders,wants the ECJ to supersede the legal systems,and laws of each nation,creating a harmonised Euro legal system.But Britain's legal system is unique in Europe,as the only nation with the notion "all is permitted unless explicitly prohibited",with habeaus corpus,a right to jury trial,right to silence etc,our system of common law and Parliamentary democracy are wholly different from less free European systems

Who's real interest is it to have this "treaty". Certainly not the common person. Democracy, what a joke. There is no such thing working at the moment. The politicians are just in the pockets of the financiers. It doesn't matter who you vote for, they are all chosen by the same people. But then, we wouldn't be able to keep screwing the third world if we had decent people running the western countries, now would we? The Lisbon Treaty is a brilliantly concieved document that is a "self amending" treaty (Article 48) that paves the way for the most perfect of totalitarian states.
Vote against it AGAIN Ireland PLEASE because if ratified by all 27 states it will become illegal to even criticise the EU,let alone vote against it under the European Court of Justice ruling ( case 274/99 )!

It would be hard for French or German to rule EU if 27 countries can barely agree on anything. But there is truth in Irish perspective of Treaty. Before we accept something like that, we need to make decision-making more democratic and cut down on bureaucracy that is present in Brussels.
also lot of EU regulations are just plain idiocy and that also would have to go. But try to convince those at the top. But then we need reforms now, so Ireland found itself between rock and a hard place.

Mr McCreevy is the Eu commisioner for EU internal markets. His message is clear - Lisbon treaty is the mechanism by which the EU will take control of taxation. Every power they need to do it is hidden in the clauses and subclauses. It is absolutely necessary for this emerging EU empire (yes even Barrosso called it an empire) to take control of taxation. The EU wants to take your nation democratic rights and your money - to furter it's own ambitions. Don't say you weren't told!

A YES vote to a EU constitution would pass for sure only in Spain (as it already happened), Portugal, Italy, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovenia and the Baltic Countries. I don't know about Germany and Belgium but probably it wouldn't pass. Now, is it possible to conceive a European Union made up of Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy and some eastern countries? Of course not.

I consider my self to be a europhile. I truly believe in the European Integration Process and what it can represent. But of course there's another thing I believe in, which is called Democracy. Now, it is clear that the majority of people in certain countries (above all UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark) are against the Integration Process. Conceiving a European Union without these countries, that, culturally and geopolitically, are at the very core of Europe would be pointless.

That's where I believe you're making a mistake: I don't believe the problem is integration, but how integraton is managed. I agree that the way through which european politicians are doing that is wrong but this doesn't mean that there wouldn't be more democratic, transparent and accountable ways to do that. European Integration is like Nuclear Power: if well managed it can bring about a lot of benefits. If badly-managed it can turn into a disaster.

That's why I really don't like Nigel Farage and its fellows: they don't support constructive euroscepticism, they just fuel populist europhobic propaganda (very similar to the one of far-right totalitarian regimes). But again, european politicians have blown everything. There was a time, not so long ago, when the public was for the EU. They could have seized the moment putting the EU reform process in a democratic and transparent direction. But they didn't.

Forcing these countries to pursue more integration through legal procedures, with the majority of the people against, would be a big mistake that can exarcebate the atmosphere. Even though I support it, I've come to understand that this process cannot continue (at least now). I can only hope that somewhen in the future Pro-European ideas will start to flourish amongst the people (not the politicians) of these countries. But I must be realist. These ideas are not present today.

Honestly, I don't believe it is a problem of democratic accountability. Even if they signed a treaty that allows the people to elect the commissioners, even if they gave more power to the eu parliament and made it more transparent, even if they made the EU the most democratic body of the planet, people (in these countries) would always vote NO because they do not want the EU. British, Irish, Dutch, Swedish and Danish do not want the EU. We've got to accept that.

I think that are other issues on which european countries should cooperate because by cooperating they can reach better results and these issues are political ones: 1) Like or not, Russia controls the energy of the entire continent. A portuguese might be different from a pole but they bought by gas from Moscow: a common foreign policy towards Russia would benefit both because Russia wouldn't even consider the individual positions of, say, Belgium or Slovenia.

Finally, why do I agree with the EURO? For a simple reason, not because I simply believe that the upsides of the euro will outnumber the downsides more and more in the future. The biggest percentage of EU countries trade is with other EU countries. 60% of Britain's trade is with Europe. Having the same currency stabilizes trade because companies do not have to worry about the currency of belgium devaluating against the one of Austria

The real point about maintaining the pound, is not that it will necessarily remain strong, or stable but that it keeps us independent. Joining the euro,means we no longer set our own interest rates. And we no longer run our own country, for better or worse!

Again, interest rates are set for two reasons: fighting inflation, stimulating growth. Recent events prove that, given the level of interdependency of european economies, when growth slows, it slows all over europe, when inflation rises, it rises all over Europe. Individual european countries, included Britain, have no such weight that allows them to address Growth and Inflation all alone. Keynes died in 1946. Sorry.

The Central Bank England controls nothing. The size of the British economy is too small on a global scale to allow your bankers to actually control what goes on in your economy. When Keyenes (an economist that I know and admire) said those things Britain had a status in the world that today doesn't have. The United States is at the moment that only country that still can "try" (not even manage to) control its economy through its central bank.

Also individual european economies are too small and except probably for the Pound and the Mark the other currencies would end up depending on the dollar anyway. Plus you shouldn't forget that in 40 years from now there won't be even 1 european countries in the list of the world's largest economies so also the Mark and the Pound would end up losing their famous stability. Recent events have proved that when growth slows it slows all over Europe and when inflation raises it raises all over Europe. Why? because European economies have become enormously interdependent. In 30 years from now the level of economic dependence of the European Countries on each other will be probably equal than the level of economic dependence of EU states on each other. But it is also true that the number of common interests (economic and geopolitical ones) european countries have is huge. You would look like a fool if you were to claim that Slovakia and Hungary or Spain and France do not have the same geopolitical interests. In a globalized world, ECONOMIC and GEOPOLITICAL INTERESTS have nothing to do with the culture or the identity of people from that nation.

I don't want to create the United States of Europe. That just doesn't work. I would like the politicians to go and tell the people: listen there are these 5 or 6 issues on which we have common interests and therefore we have to cooperate. So we are going to sign 5 or 6 NATO-style treaties that are related only on that particular issue without trying to constitutionalize Europe.

no the main reason Britain is anti-EU is The EU,as well as controlling our borders,wants the ECJ to supersede the legal systems,and laws of each nation,creating a harmonised Euro legal system.But Britain's legal system is unique in Europe,as the only nation with the notion "all is permitted unless explicitly prohibited",with habeaus corpus,a right to jury trial,right to silence etc,our system of common law and Parliamentary democracy are wholly different from less free European systems

When in 2050 the list of countries by economy size is going to be 1.China 2. India 3. USA 4. Brazil 5. Russia 6. Mexico, countries like France, Germany and Britain won't be more important than Denmark or Poland on proportion.
