You are smoking way to fast. Having smoked cigars for about a year before smoking pipe, I can recommend that when smoking a cigar, take 2-3 puffs every 4 to 5 minutes. I found that smoking to fast ( which I have done with both cigars and pipes) makes the flavor seem burnt. I normal length cigar should take 1-1.5 hours to smoke. Happy Smoking!
You can remove the label too. When I do smoke a cigar, I usually take off the label. Some people do, some people don't; it depends on what they like. Kind of the mindset that you're smoking the cigar, not the label/brand name.
Your smoking a bit fast but thats because your so used to pipes in which you have to struggle to keep it lit but a cigar will burn for ever and in order for a cigar to burn evenly you need to really torch the crap out of that thing when you light it don't be afraid to use multiple matches and try smoking slow while rotating your cigar to let the flame spread out.
i Have been watching your vids and i purchased a 2 new pipes and started smoking , if you like cigars i have been smoking cubans and fine cigars for over 15 years and i recommend one for you ,. i cant get enough of these and they are Cohiba Extra - vigaroso dark , awsome !!try one and let us know how you like it also Davidoff and Romeo and Julieta are good too .
the cigar thing is called a band, and a lot of people actually remove the band before smoking it. also, you should puff about once every minute or so, dont smoke it like a pipe XD
I find that as the seasons change to warmer temperatures I prefer to smoke cigars more than pipes. Not sure why, but man do I enjoy a good cigar. Acid Kuba kuba's are good, has a nice sweet smoke to them.
@GracieVision It's personal preference, I like to keep it on till about an inch away then I take it off. One point is that sometimes the band can stick to the cigar leaf and when you try to pull it off will rip the leaf, the best thing to do is at least smoke it a bit so the glue warms up before taking the band off just to be safe.
@smoking919 Oh ya La Gloria is one of my favorites also, personally I like a V cut but you should really try all of them to find what you like... biting however is generally frowned upon by aficionados but works until you get some cutters to play with.
I like the shirt. A few tips on smoking cigars: Keep your cherry as flat as possible the more cone shaped or pointy it is the faster and hotter your smoke will be. Also when your cherry burns unevenly you should use your torch to even it out or what ever your light is. This keeps the heat even and if your smoke is sour blow out(purge) and wait until it has cooled down.
If you will smoke too fast, it will get bitter taste whitch all experienced cigar smokers try to avoid. It is good to lay it down for a minuite or two and then take again few puffs.
When I first tried cigars I found enjoyment was much easier to attain than when I first picked up a pipe. I'm still working on perfecting the pipe technique. I can easily enjoy a cigar. Keep on enjoying!
May I suggest a few cigars that I enjoy: Tatuaje Reserva SW, anything by Ashton, Drew Estates Liga Privada No. 9, Illusione MJ 12, Perdomo Gran Cru or Lot 23 or Patriarch. Find a good brick and mortar shop that carries a wide variety and try one of everything until you start narrowing down what you like.
Try some Oliva, great price, great cigars, easily available. They taste a lot better the slower you smoke em. Love the shirt and how true, but I'm sure there are a few gay sharks too.
I had pretty much the same experience with cigars, except of the strange burn because my brother helped me( I remove the band totally and stick a pipe tool into the Cigar, to smoke as long as possible ,... only some times)
Just smoked an Alec Bradley Prensado it's his line other than his Maxx brand. They offer the Prensados in a box press or square shape(noob). I think you will like a box press cigar because it has a very easy and consistent draw. I know that from you pipe vids that draw and the flow that the stem and pipe gives you are very important to you so a box pressed would be a logical choice.
or you could take the band off when you get to it ;) puss slowly - and if it gets a bit nasty BLOW for 3 seconds - let it sit for a minute or so and resume smoking SLOWLY ;-)
Here's a trick called purging. At about the halfway point on your cigar, preferably just after your ash falls by itself (I never ash my cigars, it acts as a honeycomb and cools the smoke IMHO), hold a flame at or on the cherry and blow through the cigar. You should get a big flame, sometimes blue flame. Blow until the big flame calms down, then continue smoking as normal. This should give your cigar a fresher taste on the palate, as sometimes cigars get a little "muddy" as you smoke them. Enjoy!
I'm probably wrong but usually I find it a little bit more pleasent if I don't bite the cigar but my grandfather was a WW2 vet and he used to say that anyman that doesn't bite down on a cigar shouldn't be smoking one haha. (whatever that means)
hey not that im an expert or anything but i started off on cigars so i know them a little better than i do pipes. You can take the band of the cigar (label) off, i find that it gets in the way. the last third of the cigar is usually the most intense so smoke it down to as far as you can. I recommend to try a Hoya De Monterrey Excalibur Dark Knight excellent smoke as far as cigars. keep up the videos love watchin em
Wanted to let you know, about one of the other videos,..
Curry spice blends always contain tumeric. I like Madras curry which is widely available. Goes good on Spanish rice which also goes good with avocado slices.
Just hold it over your food to smell the two together before adding it. Works well with Cajun foods and chilis as well.
If you don't have a cutter you can use your match stick or pipe tool pick. Also you can place the cigar in your mouth a bit and the cap with come off. Good video.
u are going to have to get a humidor now :) u can get a lot of great cigars here in the states......i smoke about one cigar a week.....they can be truly relaxing...wait until u try a real cuban....its like a tobacco orgasm....and i love the shirt...lol cheers
@mibgd cubans are pretty nice... I used to only smoke them exclusively until I ventured out... to, say, Venezuelans.... and even Brazilian... Cubans are good.... but it's real easy to think that they are the best... and not try other AMAZING cigars from all over the world.
As a rule of thumb, i learned that you should only allow the cigar to be in your mouth for a total of 3 minutes in a 45 minute to an hour session. Just a tip. It will certainly increase the enjoyment you would experience. Enjoy!
Glad to see you enjoying the odd cigar now too. I think Pipelawyer recently did a vid on uneven burning. It hasn't really been a problem for me, and I feel it's more to do with how a cigar is rolled, than from anything you're doing wrong. You'll probably find too, a cigar that can hold a good amount of it's ash, will help it to smoke cooler, so resist the urge to "flick" to soon, or too often. Other than that, looks like you've got it all under control. :-)
I've neglected my pipe; I just can't seem to get away from the convenience of cigars. It's killing my wallet, but a pipe isn't the most portable thing so a lot of the time I don't really have a choice. Maybe once the summer kicks in I can start up with pipes again.
