you have the pump turned up on that thing or is it smoking that bad just due to the 11k feet??? Im guessing due to the altitude, but Ive never had an older diesel to know how they react to high elevations
sweet you guys went from Wisconsin,,,,im in antigo, you should have picked me up i would have paid my way just for the ride,,,,, or pulled my camper in my dodge behind for sleeping arrangements lol
What's weird about this video is, I'm thinking about buying an M35a2, and one of the first things I thought is "how fun would this be to take to Ouray?" I recognized the hairpin turns on 550 right away, and I'm from Iowa! I think there's a mine reclamation site just another bit up the road from where the video stops?
Go for it. Just leave some extra travel time. We drove nonstop and did 1200 miles in about 35 hours. Stay off the interstates to keep from getting run over, 50 is the best route to get over the mountians in my opinion. We also took a lot of tools and spare parts even though we didn't need them. Napa doesn't carry too many parts for these trucks. A lot of prep work but it makes for an awesome trip. BTW, you are close on the location, we are just north of the Idarado mine site.
They're governed at 2600-2700 but it's not a good idea to run them that fast for extended periods. Running them that fast is part of what gave them kind a reputation as a weak engine.
We made the trip from Wisconsin. The last trip I averaged about 9.0 mpg grossing 20k and holding it steady at 2200 rpm. That was with dummy hubs on the front axle and the rear interaxle off.

Actually i have a Kraz-255B truck, which is soviet, but it also has a very low rpm diesel and it also works best on low rpm.

Do you live in Durango? Or in the area? I was also wondering what kinda mileage you get with that. Thanks

it's called the million dollar highway because it cost $1M per mile to build. That truck is not a 2 stroke.

Actually nobody really knows. There are several stories behind the name.
