This is yet another wonderful idea, and I'm happy to say that it is one I can partake in. I feel a bit weird saying this in a YouTube comment, but I started this project a while ago, and the first letter was to you, Rosianna, about how you inspire me and why I am begining this project, an idea I've stolen from you.
This is such a beautiful, fantastic idea! I must do it. I wish I had known about this when I was little. You see, I have tried in vain to keep a diary since I was quite small. But I could never be constant with my writing and I thought that in order to have a diary , I needed to write every day. Now that I'm older, my love for writing has grown. I adore keeping journals and I write almost daily. And now, Rosi, you have opened my eyes to a creative and totally rad writing project! Thanks.<3

Great vid! Ever visited the site futureme[dot]org? It's kind of awesome. You can write letters to yourself and choose a date in the future to receive the letter as an e-mail. It is both wonderful and strange to look upon your prior voice. I highly recommend it! And I do think the written voice is a clearer, less self-conscious voice than the spoken voice, and that one can gather a great deal more about a person from a letter than from a spoken conversation.
The only trouble I'd find myself having doing a project like this is finding my words. I use my dialog in my head as a way to filter stuff out and writing has never been my strongest suit but I think if I were to take on a project of letters then I would be able to develop my writing. Thoughts to ponder over. I adore your videos and look forward to everyone you publish on the inter-webs. Have a wonderful day -Kelley
I love this. I used to take a class with a director called Allison Anders, and she told us how she thought journaling was dead, and used to write letters to Paul McCartney and Wim Wenders as a letter-diary. I always liked that notion (even though I think it's a bit weird to tell a celebrity about your life assuming/as though they're reading and caring). But I like this even more, because picturing your audience brings clarity, and by keeping them and knowing who it was aimed at makes it special.
I like this idea of writing letters to certain people or to nobody at all without the intention of ever sending it to that person. Kind of like... what would you tell someone if you knew it was the last time you'd ever communicate with them. Thanks for talking about this, I may write a few letters of this sort myself.
Do you think I could get the text of this letter? I suppose you've sealed it...I don't want to be a bother. I really enjoyed this video.
You're someone I'll probably never meet, which makes me wonder if meeting those I admire would be better or worse. Will I discover things I don't like about them, and will this add or subtract to the image I hold of them? I hope you don't mind me using this space as a way to get my thoughts out...I suppose your video holds the answer to that. Thank you
It depends on how best you express yourself. I am much more eloquent when writing. I actually kind of already do this project (not exactly the same) but I write letters to myself in the future, hide them in my room and find them about a year or two later. I only write a new one once I have discovered the other one and the cool thing is I ALWAYS forget where i put them so always am surprised when i read them. it's awesome. I like your idea of writing to famous people and authors though.
i have a private journal where i write things that i plan on never sending or sharing. I call it 'the unsaid' and it's where i write anything that i'm not sure if i should share with someone. lets me get my thoughts and emotions out of my head.
anyways, the unsaid, is kind of like letters you'll never read, just shorter title.
Lovely idea. Keeping a box of letters, unsent and just purely for the benefit of writing out your feelings is pretty nice. You can always go back to them and reminisce. But I feel like if I did that, I would never open the letters again... Maybe it's enough to know that you wrote it all out? Writing is thinking, after all xD
Fantastic idea. I keep a diary, it's how I organize my thoughts and my most violent emotions. I think of it the way Anne Frank wrote about- not like I consider my diary a person, as she did her Kitty, and I'm paraphrasing here- but she said that paper will always listen and never judge. So I guess what I'm saying is that my diary isn't quite a mirror and it isn't quite someone else. I think that personal writing projects, whether they be diaries or unsent letters or anything, are very wonderful
This is so amazing! It's a really good idea :) I have tons of journals where I just talk to myself and there are so many lines like, "Well, you know what this person looks like, so I don't need to tell you. No one else will ever read this!"
Yeah... it's such an interesting idea to give your entries a specific audience! I might just have to try this :]
Oh, and forgot to mention... I LOVE Single Father so much!! So emotional and powerful! Really came to love all the characters since everyone was so realistic and flawed.
When I was young I used to do something similar. When I would get upset with my parents, friends, etc, I would write them letters venting my anger (that I never gave to them, of course). It would help me to think about what I was feeling and why, and it would let me let go of that frustration.
I used to write letters to my future self and my best friend when a was a kid, your video has re-inspired me to do this again. This idea is absolutely incredible :)
I have to tell you, as an English nerd myself, I have reveled in your last two videos. I have watched them, watched them again, pondered them, talked about them, self-analyzed in regards to them, and watched them again. I don't have much to say about them yet. I just need more time to think...and I'm thankful for that. Amazing what sharing can do...
This is interesting. I think people would definitely be different in a letter then in an email. I think the act of actually writing something instead of typing it leads us to try and show ourselves in a better light. We word things better and try to make our handwriting look nice. It does make me wonder though, is the person who you are in the letter or in the email more real? Are they both equally real? I think this project could help people answer the question "Who am I?"
Rosianna, I loved this video! I comment a lot on your videos with nerdy English-major stupid shit that probably sounds pretentious but I'm just so much of a literature nerd that I don't care. Right now I'm itching to reference a specific scene from Shakespeare but I will restrain myself (I'll probably go write a blog about it so as not to clutter up your video comments with my literary ramblings haha). Anyway, I've been writing unsent letters my whole life, so I really enjoyed this video.
@missrosepip Hahaha I don't think your comments sound pretentious! I have really enjoyed them. But perhaps we're both pretentious English students :) and wow, it's really cool that you've been writing them for such a long time. I really can't stop.
It's funny how people always say French is such a romantic language, i did it in school and i've six or seven French films and it never really has much of an affect on me, but Spanish for some reason, i really like the way it sounds.
I've two of Shakira's Spanish albums and even though i don't understand 98% of the words she's saying, i get a kick out of them - similarly from the handful of Spanish words you do have in your videos, such as the pronunciation of you channel name, just now :) .
There is/was an actor (I forget which one, sorry. In fact, maybe he was a director... No he was an actor) who wrote letters to the deceased author of a play he was in. He used the medium of letters to the author to ask questions, discuss issues with his characterisation and voice problems with the play. The letters act as an exploration or dramatic exercise and a diary (I think it's available as a book but with my failing memory [forgive me, I just turned 21!] that is little help!)
When I moved to Iceland I started writing letters. It makes me so happy just sending one off. I rarely if ever expect a response... but when one arrives it's worth more to me than a gift of money. If you ever get the chance to go I'd suggest look into volunteering with SEEDS Iceland! I wrote about it in my blog if you're interested...
@moonstrands Nope, and twitter and YouTube are the only ways people should get in touch with me. I don't really have the money to set up a PO box or the time to respond to letters. Plus (not that I assume I would get them), I don't really want people to send me things, I already have too much stuff! But yeah, in short, nope :)
@Jaaakeismine Writing a letter can be a good revision break. Your mind is still engaged in freewriting so you don't lose focus, but it's still cathartic.
I've always thought of my diary as a letter to God, even when I'm not sure I believe in him. But it's always addressed to someone. It's sometimes shouting, sometimes pleading; but it's always communicating to an unseen reader.
This is a kind of project I could get behind. I find that, since most of my friends throughout my life have lived rather close, the art of letter writing has long since gone unpractised by me ever since I reached the point where school stops arbitrarily using letters as writing exercises. I think I want to change that.... and it's all your fault.
I think projects like this are interesting because they provide a snap shot into our thoughts at a specific instance. With life being so hectic and changeable being able to see where you have been is an important part of our journey.
@puddin437 Eep, I wanted to do one before the referendum and can't really motivate myself to do one after, but I'm pro-AV as I think it means there's a better chance of my vote/opinion/voice being heard than under FPTP.

@AwkwardAmo wheee arcade fire! There's no pressure to pick who to write it to. It's just whoever you feel like. There's one letter I started writing when I wasn't entirely sure to whom it was I was writing. It slowly became apparent as I wrote who it was I was writing to!
This is brilliant. You are brilliant. I've been thinking lately that I'm losing my ability to write letters and, consequently, my abillity to communicate thoughts to someone else.in a coherent way. Youtube serves that purpose, but only to some extent, because so much of what we say in a video is conveyed through expressions, gestures, music snd images. Wonderous idea!
What a lovely idea, I'd never thought of writing such a different kind of diary. I'll have to begin writing some letters, it does seem liberating in a strange sort of way :)
I have to say that this is a fantastic idea. I've always loved to write but I tend to use the computer more and more now. I think I will have to start using a pen and paper now when I have to record some thoughts rather than just grabbing my phone and typing or recording a voice message. You have inspired me to get out a pen and you never know I just might write a letter to you.
This sounds lovely! I've read Possession and watched the film Bright Star recently and the idea of writing letters keeps spiraling around in my head. I love your writing as well :)
Really great project idea. I've always liked how unsent letters often share the quality of not being written solely for the intended recipient but also for the writer themselves. I do hope you eventually look back over them, i can imagine it'd be a great measure of growth.
Wow you have written a lot of letters. It sounds like a crazy good idea, I may have to give it a go. I certainly need some way of pulling my thoughts together into something coherent. Also, I loved Single Father, so sad but then so lovely x
oh this is lovely, makes me want to do the same. also the way you use language is so freakishly awesome it kind of reminds me of the way Stephen Fry speaks.
This is yet another wonderful idea, and I'm happy to say that it is one I can partake in.

Also, I loved Single Father, so sad but then so lovely x

videos work a lot like letters, just well, videoish.
i love this letter, or video, or a letter within a video. (INCEPTION)

oh this is lovely, makes me want to do the same. also the way you use language is so freakishly awesome it kind of reminds me of the way Stephen Fry speaks.
