I don't get why he was allowed to get away with this.
I understand fooball is a rough sport, not a years goes by without someone injured, but when a player is constantly injuring people compared to others, than there's something wrong there.
Greatest cheap shot artist of all. He'd have been a hockey player named Scott Stevens today. (Shoulder blasts to the face in a time when nobody wore facemasks.)
He broke noses and jaws at practice...the 49's sometimes used Hardy as a blocking back on pass plays....one game he KO'd both DE on consecutive plays..using his shoulder...
What a fucking asshole!! This guy has no remorse for the hits he laid on people, plays like he has a chip on his shoulder, oppenents putting bounties on him and calling him the dirtiest player in the game?!? You my friend can expect a 4.3 million dollar fine in the mail for all your past atrocities, influencing others who admired you and later played in the pros trying to mimick you and your poor attitude thanks to the new and improved...politically correct NFL!!
@TheeALYX Yes! Thats my imitation of the nfl commish and his new ridiculous rules on big hits so congrats to you for halfway seeing the sarcasm in my comments.
Best way to find a good football player is someone with this background or someone given a girly type first name that naturally led to fighting a la "Boy named Sue". Hardy Brown simply integrated close contact fighting techniques into his tackling process. I believe most of these are "illegal" under current NFL rules.
What people don't understand about football, is that the running back or ball carrier has a disadvantage because he's carrying or catchin the ball. A Defenseive back or safety has the edge. House rules if you will. What you have to teach in the game is anger management. No pity on the little 180 pound db, run over him, through him, step on him etc. And my second rule, if a guy cheap shots a guy, WE are getting him out of there, regardless of the score or outcome. 1950's bs.
@1997soxfan He was breaking jaws well after facemasks were introduced. You could take a modern player and teach him Brown's technique with guaranteed results provided the aim point is dead on.
...who once picked up Fred Biletnikoff in a playoff game with one hand between his legs and the other over his shoulder and slammed him to the turf head first right after the ball was snapped?
If Tatum (or Blount) would have played in that era they would have been taking players off the field in body bags.
21 knockouts in 12 games when they played without facemasks. I don't think that made him more fearsome than other players, although they'd have to be the ones to answer that. It would seem the game itself was just like that. But even if it were so, how could the players in Tatum's era, when the players obviously hit so much harder by driving their head THROUGH the ball-carrier or receiver, be afraid of a guy who only hit with his shoulder?
@fistofate Colts Hall Of Famer Art Donovan described Browns' approach as "An intent to maim". The guy was a WW2 USMC combat vet who quite simply did not care a bit as to the health of anyone, not even his own teammates. There are a few great articles around that describe the fear opponents had of this man. One QB mentioned his back flat out telling him not to throw in Browns area. The QB forgot during the game and the back was hospitalized as a result
Don't you think Brown would have hit like that too, if he had the sort of helmet? The only real difference is that at 180# he would have been moved to safety since that's way too small to be a linebacker in the 70s or later.
@fistofate 21 knockouts in 12 games in one season. Peeled a guy's nose off with a hit. Took out a starting back field before halftime during a game. Knocked out Kyle Rote and Frank Gifford on successive plays. Ended careers of multiple players. Described by reporters of the time as a "killing machine". So hated that not a single former NFL player went to his funeral. Was so feared that Backs asked Quarterbacks to be careful about throwing the ball in his area.
I don't get why he was allowed to get away with this.

Cheap shots? No such thing. If they don't want to get hit, don't play. Problem solved.
