can never get enough of this. I'm going back soon, home to get that baboon. who cut up my eye, tore up my levi's. something stronger could real hold me down. getting hi, rape, betting...this is our theme! its any of us as younger guys full of piss and vinegar
If you look into thisd song, it is SO deep. Its a psychological analysis of every band member individually, wrapped into one song. Who does that? Pete is the fucking greatest musician and composer, and overall muscial genius alive in my opinion. I've grown up listening to The WHo, and I've only recently gone back to listening to Quadrophenia, and its just amazing. Their best work imo. It's all SO DAMN thought out. Just wonderful. This is who they are, right here in this song.
Look, I saw this performed on a stormy Thanksgiving night, 1973 (Forum, L.A.). The single greatest rock show (and band) I've ever witnessed. Quadrophenia worked, it was amazing, I don't recall any glitches...incredible. After the only true "call them back" encore I've ever seen (15 minutes of non-stop clapping), they ended with Pete smashing his guitar.
Concerts were all downhill after that. As Townshend pointed out "It's raining outside. That's a good sign."
Sorry to emphasize this, it's so Keith. I did go out with him a couple times when he was getting bad. And, a friend Redbeard, who has a radio (and online) show hosted an anniversary program for Quadrophenia just 6 months ago, with Pete confirming that the first part of this song was entirely about Keith when he was out of contrrol. The end of the song incorporates the others to some degree, but Moon's love of getting stoned, and doing anything just b/c people tell him not to do it, is legendary
"'Dr. Jimmy' was meant to be a song which somehow gets across the explosive, abandoned wildness side of his character. Like a bull run amok in a china shop. He's damaging himself so badly that he can get to the point where he's so desperate that he'll take a closer look at himself. The part where he says, 'What is it, I'll take it. Who is she, I'll rape it.' That's really the way I see Keith Moon in his most bravado sort of states of mind." - Pete
NO. This is Keith Moon's theme. He truly was schizophrenic when he got too drunk, and stoned. He was nearly shy sober, but when he got stoned, he was a hell raiser, and quite evil to some of the women in his life. It was the alcohol that was the worst, though.
Keith's theme was Bell Boy ("I'm a bloody lunatic, I'll even carry your bags"). Dr. Jimmy wasn't anyone's theme, but John's theme "Is it Me?" was contained in it.
not rly. The closest you get to a serious example of a Who theme as a whole is the end of The Rock, when all four themes are being played simultaneously.
I get what you're saying, but I don't think Pete would really agree with you.
Quadrophenia was the MOST underrated album in rock history! It is a classic album and I love hearing the live versions of these songs! Thanks ALOT

If you caught them on the right night
Quad could be pretty good.
BUT and it is a big but,
(Pete will admit) they took awhile
to get it right in concert.
A lot of people got really upset with the
Quad shows (when they weren't clicking).

Moonie's theme: Bell Boy
Pete: Love Reign O'er Me
Roger: Helpless Dancer
Entwistle: The Real Me
Quadrophenia was the sound of a band hitting full stride.
Continuity09 2 years ago
Moon the Loon- Bell Boy, but also "What is it? I'll take it? Who is she? I'll rape it!"
Devil may care attitude.
Pete- "A Hypocrite, Love Reign O'er Me"
A seeker or truth, who felt he let down himself, his family, and later, Keith
Roger- "A Fighter, A Helpless Dancer" From the start would end the worst arguments with his fist, but changed a bit
John- A Romantic - here Pete said he tried to get the sound of an ox running through a china shop.
Lunatic, Mystic, Tough guy, Romantic. The Who

This is everyone's theme wrapped into one. Each has their own theme
Roger - Helpless Dancer
Keith - Bell Boy
John - Is it Me (which is in this song)
Pete - Love Reign O'er Me
But this song has elements and lyrics from all four of those songs, along with new elements that fit them. This song is The Who's theme as a whole.
