School freaks me out. Maybe it's the fact that I'm in the middle of finals, who knows, but lately I'm just so scared that every decision I make could keep me from getting into grad school, which would keep me from my dream... And I don't know how to not be in school. Same as you- I've been doing this since I was a toddler. I have no clue what the real world is like haha.
Congrats on completing your Masters!! I know it seems like you're a fish out of water but savor the calmness of right now. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you choose to do!!
You are actually the coolest guy I have ever seen. You basically summed up my life in this video! You are going to do amazing at whatever you decide! Just keep making videos, because they give me a little hope and put a smile on my face :)
What a strange concept. You have spent your entire life in school. Well, I would ask you, what did you learn, and how does that apply to the world outside of school? Can you fix climate change? Population explosion? Know a good riddle? Start a new porn site? What practical knowledge did you learn?
@jimisru I studied Japanese literature, so I know nothing applicable to the real world. In reality, there are a lot of things I can do (teach, translate, etc.), so we'll see!
@TheRealvolution That's wonderful! The Japanese culture is one of my favorites. But I have studied mostly the arts. Everything from the ancient to the pop has a certain touch to it. I was just reading about gay Japanese comics yesterday. Well, I asked because it seems that your entering a different world than just five years ago. What does it mean to "teach." I think it has gone from a career to a vocation, or better, an occupation.
@jimisru Japan is in such a terrible place at the moment with Fukushima, and I think the culture of keeping appearances up has caused much of those problems. So teachers are vital right now for them to change course. (Which is how I see the new role of teachers. I think colleges are becoming obsolete in the old sense. I think teachers will have to find situational educational opportunities, like Fukushima.)
Dude, your smile lights up all the Christmas trees in the entire world.
I LOVE MY Wii! I'm so glad I got it, instead of the Playstation. :D
And you know what? I totally think you'll get into the PhD program. But, knowing you, you will totally be ok if you don't get into it. You will kick ass no matter what you do in life.
@jenzatron The Wii is good, too. My bf just finished Skyward Sword, and it looked like a lot of fun. I've been a playstation man since 5th grade, though, so my loyalty sticks :)
I actually wouldn't mind some time away from Academia, so I'm not too worried.
@K4TH7D4V1S Yeah, it does seem crazy now that I think about it. But I'm actually looking forward to reading now! As long as it's NOT books by the author I wrote my thesis on :D
I'm currently in a similar position, I'm in my final year of my degree and I'm not sure what to do after this. My dad is trying to convince me to go travelling (not that I need much convincing lol) but I'm not sure how I would fund it. I think a year out is in order as, same as Jamie here, I've never been out of school! XD
