Thank you!!! Thank God for people like you. I never ever could understand manuals or things one clicks that are entitled "help"...they never do, for me! But when a normal person who just knows more than I do actually shows me what to do, then I understand. It's empowering.
Thank you for the video. I've been noodling with gimp for a couple of years now teaching myself by trial and error. Your video was very insightful and has given me a new eye with a technique to back it up when it comes to working with some great pics I have that were close to great if not for the shadows!
Perhaps your best bet is going to be the curves tool (under colors)...
There you can brighten parts of the image and darken others without effecting the image overall... You can use the darken/lighten laryers approach by erasing parts of the overlying darken or lighten layer...
I'm new to GIMP and needed to give this tutorial a rest for a few days while it sunk in. Now I've returned to it, and it's going in. It feels like a rite of passage.

Greetings Joe,
Thank you for the video. I've been noodling with gimp for a couple of years now teaching myself by trial and error. Your video was very insightful and has given me a new eye with a technique to back it up when it comes to working with some great pics I have that were close to great if not for the shadows!

Hi Joe: Very good of you to reply so swiftly.
OK I'll take a copy of the photo, and make a duplicate layer.
Do I need to make another layer - one for thee darkening, & one for the lightening.
Will read up a bit on layers to understand what's going on.
Come the weekend, will have a good crack at it.
The pic btw is me reading with some kids - nice pic, but back window casts too much light, whilst little girl on right is in deep shade.

Why does your gimp have a yellow circle on the cursor? mine doesn't...

@marxistsoldier
Hi,
When I create the video that is a fuction of the video only to show where the cursor is at.
The yellow circle supposedly highlights the cursor to show where it is at...
Thanks,
Joe
