Smith gave that speech in the Senate two years ago, long before beginning a re-election campaign... I'm not a fan of the Senator, but to say that he's just taking this position to get re-elected seems to be a flawed argument from a hardened, biased view.

He was right, like Senator McCain there needed to be an adjustment in strategy; why repeat the same mistakes rather than admin they are wrong. Rumsfeld resigned;Gen Petraeus became chief of US Central Command and introduced a new strategy that is working. Sen Gordon Smith is channeling a great Oregon tradition. His predecessor, Sen Hatfield, also a Republican, was the only politician who ever deserved to call himself Pro-Life. He was anti-abortion, but he was only a lone vote against the Vietnam war, and voted against military escalation. And he cared for babies after they are born too! Too bad the GOP has gone mostly fascist and all the real Christians have been driven out.
