Dude, put an SSD Hard Drive in the iMac G3 with a SATA HDD to PATA (IDE) HDD converter and Install Mac OS 9 and the old iMac G3 will load faster than your Dell Inspiron 6400 by 20 seconds. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and my desktop PC (Ubuntu Server 11.04 w/ GUI x64 and Windows 7 Pro x86) loads faster than my laptop. Windows 7 Pro takes 200+ seconds to load (from startup to finish), and my Ubuntu Server (same PC) loads in 20+ seconds (from start to finish)
That iMac G3 is prehistoric compared to that laptop. For fair results, you should have a Mac and a Windows that were made in the same year. After all, would it be fair to race a MacBook Pro (about 2008) and the first Windows (about 1981)?

I am a gamer, and I don't buy a new computer every year. I upgrade certain components once every year to 2 years. It's cheaper than buying a new Mac every 2-3 years because it's so outdated. I spend approximately $150.00 dollars a year to upgrade, sometimes more, sometimes less. He could easily spend a third of that if he is not a gamer, and it would still beat a Mac.

@PalmyJason that was the whole point is the test though. even though OS 9 is slower it finished loading a few seconds showing that Vista was pretty crappy at loading time.
Your dell is broken, BIOS is loading for too long, or try to enable fast boot and quiet boot options. It could be that mem test is turned on in BIOS so your Dell is testing all of it's 1Gigs of ram every time it is turned on, you will probably shave 20 secs. this way, if it's not a malfunction, but definitely, Dell is not working correctly.
I guess this is how you benchmark and compare computers if you don't know any better, of course windows takes much longer to boot, compared to os 9, it's much more advanced system with many more functions, so once it's booted up, you can do much more with it, like connect modern peripherals, use different frameworks etc. , there is only so much that can load to 32megs of ram, my mac mini boots up slower than this imac, does it mean it's a worse computer ? of course not.
Boot times, in many ways, have nothing to do with how good a computer is. A SSD drive will load even faster but it doesn't mean there's more memory or a faster processor. If my laptop boots in 60 seconds it doesn't mean it's going to be good or bad a gaming.
Macs will never be bettered. My eMac G4 booted in 19 seconds. (1.42GHz, 1GB RAM) and my Windows 7 Machine took about 50 seconds (2.8GHz, 1GB RAM Dual Channel)

Yeah, but it's not that easy, you have to download a certain type of the game. In Windows, you just download it and play or the less. actually it does make sense... Mac OS 9 isn't so heavy as VIsta. So, by having a faster computer and a fat OS it wont make a difference. The computers were as slow back then as they are today. Vista vs Mac OS 9 = tie but Vista vs Mac OS X 10.6... that's another story x)

This is a little biased, My 6400(same specs) is running Windows 7 and has a boot time to desktop of about 20 seconds. Your BIOS also has fast boot turned off. Vista is also not known for being that fast of an OS. I recommend upgrading to XP or 7(yes, XP is an upgrade compared to Vista)
There is nothing wrong with Vista. It's the manufacturers fault for installing an OS that requires better hardware on weaker hardware. My PC boots up in Vista in 8 seconds.
8 seconds? From pushing the power button to all of the desktop elements being loaded? My old compaq takes that long just to scan the memory before it initializes the hard drive and starts loading Windows 2000...lol!
Pretty impressive for an older Mac. Yes Dell vistas are pretty suckish. But HP versions run A LOT faster and are better made. (I have owned a newer generation IMac and Vista.)

Commodore 64 just turn it on and away you go. Granted you need to set up the power cords about 2 minutes but turn it on and type Load"*",8 and then list for games then game. omg dude last time i checked all Mac's standard have 256mb of ATI or Nvida Gfx and thts plenty cuz anything over half a gig of video card memory will fry ur computer most the time...and Macs dont have fucking 200 gigs of software u will NEVER EVER USE clogging ur HD... my dumb HP has a "500" gig HD but after formated and all the dumb software they put in it, it now has 322 gigs... Oh and btw since 2005 Mac's are PCs they dual boot windows...idc how expensive macs trust me u get wat u pay for

Yeah, but it's not that easy, you have to download a certain type of the game. In Windows, you just download it and play or the less. But no, almighty mac makes you buy that CD that you can't find anywhere. Windows is everywhere. And we don't have to boot into a different os to play a game. Or use any other programs that mca has now adays. Sure we might not have your silly Iphoto or wtf ever, but we have like 8 different programs that can do way better then mac.

actually it does make sense... Mac OS 9 isn't so heavy as VIsta. So, by having a faster computer and a fat OS it wont make a difference. The computers were as slow back then as they are today. Vista vs Mac OS 9 = tie but Vista vs Mac OS X 10.6... that's another story x)
I don't think that the computer matters, what matters is really the OS.

This is a little biased, My 6400(same specs) is running Windows 7 and has a boot time to desktop of about 20 seconds. Your BIOS also has fast boot turned off. Vista is also not known for being that fast of an OS. I recommend upgrading to XP or 7(yes, XP is an upgrade compared to Vista)

There is nothing wrong with Vista. It's the manufacturers fault for installing an OS that requires better hardware on weaker hardware. My PC boots up in Vista in 8 seconds.

While I like this era of Mac, the new ones are overpriced pieces of shit. OS suX is the only operating system I know that works AGAINST the user and not for. Sure its cute and bubly and pretty, but it doesn't actually DO anything.
And yeah, Vista blows. But only cuz it was trying to be OS suX for Windows users. Except I hate OS suX, so why would I want my Windows to resemble that bubbly crap? I'll stick to XP, thank you. Also my Dell desktop loads faster than both those things.

Commodore 64 just turn it on and away you go. Granted you need to set up the power cords about 2 minutes but turn it on and type Load"*",8 and then list for games then game. And preto your playing while having ot go thru different windows or folders to get the game. Love my 64 wish I had an Apple to compliment it. From what I see Apples are better and more reliable than PC's. Go Apple
