The American communists in no way wanted to surrender to Russia. The Soviet plants and spies in American government and army betrayed Russia and American communism just absorbed them. The American communists wanted to use the cold war to impose communism on America.

This is one of my favorite rants from Senator McCarthy. The way he says "communist chains" But notice how he does not denounce the communist public school system and the communist churches. The poor guy is deluded and brainwashed by the communists. The public school system is their great victory. We will likely never recover.

The junior senator from whichever bumfuck state elected him was an opportunistic wanker...and a permanent blot on american history....thank god there were journalists of integrity (like Ed Murrow and Fred Friendly) around at the time to refute his every word.

Just because McCarthy couldn't get many of the accused to confess doesn't mean they were wrongly accused. He had access to many secret FBI files that were not available to the public. Some of the information was not legal to reveal at that time, so he could not always back up his accusations in public. But now that the files have been released (venona) we can now confirm that h was, for the most part, right in his accusations and anxiety of communist infiltration.

@Petirep You're relying, apparently, on right wing falsehoods to rehabilitate the image of Joe McCarthy and/or the legitimacy of the communist scare of the 50s. They and you are simply wrong!

Declassified FBI reports indicate that the FBI's leadership seriously doubted the reliability of the Venona decrypts and did not believe they would ever stand as evidence in a court of law. Still, Haynes and Klehr (perhaps the authors of some right wing garbage you've read) consider them a "smoking gun."

I meant Sen. Joseph McCarthy, he was a great man that was set up. His failure was his over exuberance. Mr. Murrow and interesting character and it's always to me who it is the writers of History create heroes for the masses. I'll look more into him, btw.

I am English but I think we need someone like Senator Joe McCarthy in the UK..I am Catholic & I believe that Joe McCarthy was a model Catholic & equally a champion of the Catholic faith as he was of his country.I came across leftists in Ipswich Uk & they were repulsive in every sense of the word,prior to that I had lived in a very Conservative little village where i met decent men & women.WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!

He thought he was doing his civic duty as an American to protect the country from the communist party, but its amazing how far people go when they are paranoid and cant think straight. Trying to expose spys is one thing but persecuting people for their beliefs is another. Whats funny is why people in America chose to join the C party in the first plac,e they should of called it something different given how America didnt take too kindly to commuism BEFORE WW2 either. uhm..I'm 16...and I don't see anything wrong with communism. I learned that all forms of government can be good, depending on its people and its leaders, as history has shown. Lets not be racist or judgmental...we are all human beings. But...not all 16 year olds are like me...and it looks like most adults aren't either.

@lBlueFishl, well, other than the fact that communist governments murdered 100 million people during the 20th century, I suppose it's just fine and dandy. If you 'learned" that all forms of gov. can be good, then you learned wrong and those who taught you are in the wrong business. Man's nature doesn't change, and the problem with communism is that it ignores the realities of man's nature. And "communist" isn't a race, so "racism" has nothing to do with it. An amazing and unfearful patriot. As a John Birch member I remember a wonderful article years ago detailing some history of Joe McCarthy. Wish we had more like him in our elected officials many of whom seem bent on feathering their own pots.
