Realize that it's only rock n' roll. This is not life altering shit. Just play and enjoy it. Step 2.) People are who they are. Axl Rose, David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, they're all narcissisitc a-holes, but accept it and move forward, it's not like you have to be with them all the time.

Theres a huge difference, personally i like rock n roll guitar players because they make the kick ass riffs and solos, whereas technically amazing players like gilbert and satriani make technically awesome songs, that often dont sound too great, in my opinion. And you're right though, no one plays like him because he plays with feeling rather than technique - every guitar player should.
