  • I took my 05 Montego to a local Express Oil to have the A/C compressor "scroll valve" replaced. I knew how to replace it myself and could order the part, but I just wanted to have it done so I didn't have to. The mechanic tried to tell me my A/C compressor was shot, and would need to be replaced for $1500; he completely ignored what I told him about the scroll valve. Needless to say, I replaced it myself and took it to a local non-chain shop and had it recharged. My A/C works great now!

  • Wellup ,nice kowin ya mr jiffy-yes the dealers are as bad or worse, ahem! WHY would anyone complain in someones face about getting ripped off "then have the same people around there engine to so called make things right-if yur gonna beat me for 30bucks I dont want u around my engine,house,fridge,kids,lawn,property,plants,dog.----thanks much!

  • Dealers and manufacturers are just as bad. Look at transmission service as part of scheduled maintenance when there are no longer any adjustments in the newer transmissions and the only "service" that can be performed is a fluid and filter change, which should cost less than $100 total instead of the typical $400-500.

As for the damage from the engine flush, I'd think people would be smart enough to shut down their engine when it doesn't sound right long before it seizes.

  • All mechanics are high school flunkies... I wouldn't trust them changing a headlight. They have one of the easiest jobs in the world and still can't handle it.

  • @FloppyBaby ya umm thats not true at all people go to school for mechanics and actually know what they are doing. Most experienced mechanics would not recommend putting chemicals to clean transmissions, fuel injectors, or your engine if your car is older and has alot of miles you will mess up your car. But using the machine to flush your transmission is ok as long as you do not use the chemicals for older cars. oh ya and most shops will charge you for a flush and not do it same with oil changes

  • @FloppyBaby Bull shit. Not only do all mechanics i know (including my self) have a high school diploma, but almost all have 2-4 years of tech school, just to be followed with extensive training at the dealer that hires you. I work for dodge, and have well over 100 hrs of specialized training. Hell, chrysler flys us to orlando for transmission classes. You can;t even work on a certain system until you have become certified in that area. You think it;s easy? try fixing your own car!

  • @FloppyBaby I bet you cant even fix your own car . ^^

  • mass merchandisers are ALL doing this

  • In any FSM its got a manufacturers specification guide to how to take care of the engine and transmission. For example with automatics jiffy lube just drains and then refills the fluid. they forgot a step of going through each gear checking the level from N, OD, D, D1-D3, and reverse while the vehicle is running and foot on the brake peddle.

  • i dont like these reporters, an engine with 250000kms on it would love new injectors (once they're fucked u may as well get new ones, they dont cost much more than having a proper clean. also all associated seals and o rings need replacing) as for oil flushing, when u drain ur old oil add about 1-2 litres of new clean oil and run the engine for 10 seconds. drain this then add the correct amount according to OEM specs. this is a better way of flushing (and cheaper).

  • I always have my trusted garage do everything on my car, from repairs to oil changes. It may cost a little more but they know damn well what they're doing. Never had any trouble with those professionals working on my car.

  • this goes back to the basics. you get what you payfor. you want to cut corners and save a few bucks going somewhere besides the dealer? then go for it. but you take that risk. ill always take my car to the dealer for work

  • If I had a car that didn't go to the dealership... THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH I would go for an oil change is Jiffy Lube or any other instant oil change place. I just recommend getting jack stands... I was not so in tune with safety and changed my oil in a parking lot without using jack stands. Fortunately, I bought jack stands after hearing horror stories of people getting crushed working under thier cars without any jack stands. JUST AVOID THESE LUBE PLACES! THEY ARE TERRIBLE!

  • If you faithfully change your oil and filter every 3,000 - 5,000 miles, there will be no sludge buildup.

  • Jiffy Lube and the like are not the same as full service independent repair shops! The techs are trained to change oil and thats it.

  • It is a shame that there are a lot of bad shops out there. They give us Automotive Technicians a bad name. I used to work at Goodyear and now at Firestone. Everything is done by the book. Everything is checked out and recorded. No service is recommended unless it is by the manufacture. No engine flushes, no power steering flushes, No fuel injection services. Filters only when dirty and brakes when they are at 2mm. Changing oil is not good enough. Fluids do break down.

  • When we find things that are wrong with your car. It is because there is and we will be glad to show you. Not just say it needs to be done. Loose tie rods or wheel bearings are very dangerous. If they were to come apart you would lose control of your car. Brake fluid does break down. It gets contaminated with copper that comes from the lines that in over time can cause your calipers to lock up. Coolant breaks down to basically water and can cause your engine and radiator to rust out internally

  • No manufacture requires you to flush your power steering fluid if it "looks" dirty. But there are test strips for your coolant and your brake fluid that test if the fluids are still protecting the system. As for transmission fluid there is a manufacture recommendation for the fluid. You dont have to flush but it can help it last longer. The fluid does become burnt and turns to a black color which does break down the clutches inside the transmission. Only flush when the fluid gets to this point.

  • Yes the services can seem a little high in between 100 and 200 dollars but think about if your transmission went out.. a few grand at least. If your radiator burst out from clogging, 300-800. Way more cheaper than part failures. Please do not go to Jiffy Lube or any fast oil change or lube spots. They are NOT shops. Go to Real shops. If one doctor told you that you had cancer, you would get a second opinion. Same with your car, Get seconds to make sure and make sure they can prove it!

  • @Streek9585 Ford is notorious for having power steering problems in their earlier cars. The fluid should be flushed every 30K or expect to replace the pump by 100k. They use transmission fluid in their pumps.

IIRC Nissan is every 30K as well.

Ive seen GM's with well over 200K on the original pump and fluid, but its quite black and I personally wouldn't trust it to do its job.

VW, and one or two more German cars are a lifetime mineral PS fluid.

  • Flushing oil engines can fuck them because all that gunk and shit could be filling in worn down parts of the engine so if you clean that out you can lose compression etc.

All that's needed is oil and filter change. Flushes are for chumps.

  • @ke70hibino Incorrect. Flushes are for people that dont change their oil and have a lot of sludge built up. If the engine blows, its because you didn't change the oil, not because you had it flushed. And those manufacturer are LYING!! THEY PERFORM THE SAME SERVICES AT THE DEALERSHIP!

  • @imthejoker4u2 regardless of where or who does it, a flush (poured in 1 location, and drained from 1 location on the engine) is an incorrect way of cleaning out an engine/transmission that is filled with complex channels and and ports. If your engine/trans is in bad enough shape to require a 'flush' then it should be removed, disassembled and cleaned properly. To avoid this lengthy and costly procedure, maintain the engine/trans fluidi properly, and don't abuse it.

  • @angusandleigh Ill agree that a flush is usually a band-aid on a bullet wound. But I have personally seen cars that were very sludged up begin to come clean with stepped up maintenance after a good flush. But yes, preventative maintenance (I.E. changing your fluids regularly) is the best course. One of the best ways to reduce the possibility of sludge is to use synthetic lubricants. They will extend the change intervals as well as the life of the parts.

  • @imthejoker4u2 Yeah back when i was young and foolish I had an engine flush done on a car I was driving and one I was going to replace it with, neither car ran right afterwards. The first car I just wrote off as i was going to replace it, but the 2nd (1991 Chev Tracker w/1.6L 8 valve) I had to take the engine out and re-clean it as the flush had clogged up the EGR chamber and EGR valve. Yes the carbon was gone from the cylinders, but it didn't simply go out the exhaust lol

  • i use engine flush on my own cars, but never on customers cars. i dont know how many oil changes have been skipped, and what deposits may be there. it has killed two cars that i used it on a long time ago but neither had oil changed for at least four years, so neglect was factored.

  • yea I work at an express lube our managers tell us to sell both the engine flushes and the fuel inj services, I hate working there never do either of them at quick lubes

  • I always change my, and my gf's oils, filters, plugs & wires. The only time I use a mechanic is when diagnostic machines & gaskets are needed. Even then, If I leave the shop while the work is being done, afterwards I find they've done sloppy jobs.

  • But there are other shop scam artists too. THey have opinions and make their opinions your car has to suffer, Be careful anywhere you go. One guy told me to use a type of oil. I pointed out that the manufacturer says use none other than another type. To which he responded well I know better. Ok then, fine and if they are right I pay you to replace the engine, give me a break.

  • all these places are the same thing i go to peoples homes and do repairs and all other things and get amazed by what a lot of people think things should be done i just say if you want that its fine i dont mind the extra money for nothing then they see it diffrently work in the los angeles

  • I was told many years ago.....like 35 years ago that engine flushes are potentially bad for an engine

  • so did hyundai and many others issue tsb you can get stuff done at one jiffy lube and then go to another jiffy lube they will tell you at that mileage you need the same stuff done agian

  • PEOPLE NEVER GO TO JIFFY LUBE.

  • More like Iffy Lube

  • I don't like ANY of these fast oil change places. The employees usually seem really stupid and look like ex-cons. I would rather find a local gas station I can trust and PAY MORE MONEY

  • very true

  • It's too bad with all this. Totally illegit to the point you just gotta give up and laught at it. JIPPY LUBE.

  • The other side of the argument is this, if you say I NEVER NEED to do anything to my car besides oil changes, then you are a FUCKING IDIOT! plain and simple. Transmission fluid goes bad, as do other fluids on your car, if you think you never need to do anything, then you end up going to your various repair shops when parts start breaking, i have a 91 vehicle with 525,000K on it, and its in fine condition, all because of routine maintainence, but if you prefer to replace parts instead of fluids.

  • I used to be a jiffy lube customer...the last time I promised myself to never ever go back because of the extreme pressure and the subsequent pouting by the attendant trying to sell me a dozen or so add-ons to my basic oil change...going to Wal-mart where I get gr8 service with no pressure!

  • Now I know saying no to all the car flushing svcs was a good thing although always leaving feeling a little guilty for not getting all the needed svcs & that's where they get ya. Good thing I really don't have the $ & the guilt I felt was for a scam. I knew they were, & have been for a while, purposely ripping my wiper blades & selling me new ones. The last time I went I told them not to touch the wipers & that I am on to their wiper tearing tricks. Who can ya trust? DIY!

  • I got tired of not knowing if my car was really getting new oil at the local jiffy lube so I decided to do it myself. I knew nothing about changing oil. started watching some videos on YT and decided to go for it. it was pretty messy and slow the first 2-3 times, but I got it down now. it doesn't save me THAT much more money, but I get the satisfaction of knowing I'm taking care of my own car.

  • to aznsketcher: good for you. I know what you mean. Also when you do it yourself you can pick good brand oil and filters.

  • Great video! Thank you for posting this video. It is important to know about scams from mechanic shops!

  • please help me with my problom so i blew a driver side tire on my oddessey mini van we got towed to les shawb tires and got the blown tire replaced but then the guy said we have to replace the passenger tire because it had a small kink in it and they would be reliable for later damages did we really have to buy a new passenger side tire one or wore we riped off?

  • you didn't get ripped off , you just got swayed into buying another tire that you probably didn't need , at least not that day. I would have said ok well first lets go to the garage , I wanna see the kink !

  • As an ASE Certified technician myself i can tell you most of this is true BUT they only really give you half an explanation. first off if you change your oil every 2 to 3k miles you should NEVER NEED an engine flush. however if the oil services are severely neglected an engine flush might just save an engine. but Its more involved requiring some removal of parts to dispose of any particles which might have broken loose inside the engine from the solvents.
