  • Epic..

  • Jack white made this song popular

  • thumbs up for the white stripes!

  • The white stripes did an awesome job at covering...she just doesnt say conquest right LOL

  • This is awesome!! I have this record for sale the bid is at $18.00 if your intrested email me at handnheart2002@yahoo.com. (Condition: no broken areas, slightly scratched)

  • Thank you, loved this.

Does anyone have the song "Don't read the letter i wrote you" by Patti page??? I would love to hear this song again.

  • It is so wonderful.

  • too bad the white strips had too do this song. i bet the me first and the gimmes would have made a better version of this song

  • This is cool. I just found out a few seconds ago on Wikipedia that 'Conquest' was a remake. I thought it was originally sung by the White Stripes!

  • Jack White F#$% the original!!!

  • I may have written this year a year ago.....(have forgotten) anyway this is not Patti's original charted single release. This was rerecorded for her TV show. This is great but the original recording is much better. The bridge is not overpowered by wordless chorus.

  • @patentpumps I agree. But thought I'd upload it anyway!

  • And I am so happy you did. It was the first time I ever saw this clip. Thanks again.

  • I was privileged to see her in Yuma, AZ 2 years ago. WOW, she was incredible. Her voice and style improved even better over the years. What a great talent.

  • OMG! The white stripes! I feel so bad for not knowing that the stripes cover Patti Page.

  • Conquest by Patti Page

  • Has anyone else covered this song, besides white stripes? Heard a very similar version on the radio, with the COONNQQUUEESSTTTT part lol. May have been a local band though, not sure...

  • I ogt here from her other song, How much is that doggie in the window, which my grand-ma used to sing to me when I was a kid, but is now known because of a video game.

And this one is known because of a cover. I have to say I am glad people are bringing old songs back to the public, we ned to hear these great songs, and not let them disappear.

  • id pound her

  • Well, I like the White Stripes version better, but this is also good, only a bit old...

  • i like the stripes version better, but i prefer all rock covers of...softer...songs

  • Barf. Disagreement.

  • ...miss patti page...very much alive and living in rancho santa fe, ca

  • Is she still alive? and i agree that it would be great to see her and white striped duet together.

  • Man I have to say I just love both versions so much. this one just has a timeless classic feel while The Stripes version has that witty sense of humor that just make me chuckle. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • amazing voice

  • Too bad Miss Page is a bit too old to do a duet with Mr. White. That would be awesome!

  • @CatapultYourMom 82 is the new 67.

  • whites stripes better

  • i agree XD

  • yah i didnt know white stripes was a cover, i thought it was original, my english teacher has this song on a cd she plays in class, but she has the white stripes version

  • The White Stripes or should I say Jack White covers so many awesome old blues songs but I didnt know Conquest was a cover! This is a great song and video by Patti who is very cute. Thumbs up you go girl!

  • lol...wow, I didn't realize this was an older song.

The White Stripes did a great version of this classic

  • Wish I had a waist that small. It's gotta be like 24 in! If it's a girdle or waist cincher I wanna know how she was able to sing? I saw her perform this song on one of the classic movie channels YEARS ago and have been googling it ever since..then I heard it on the ebay commercial..then FINALLY here it is. Thanks god! I love it!

  • The Singing Rage, Miss Patti Page.

    Her music is timeless.

    Thank you for posting this.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • would've been beast if meg did the vocals on their version..

  • White stripes version is better in my opinion but thank god this song was written XD

  • TWS version isnt better, but its just as good, but their both good in their own ways.

  • I like the white stripes version better but this is always great to look to originals are kewl most of the time.

  • lovely patty..beautiful lady with a beautiful voice.

  • awesome old stuff :) but, a white stripes fan as I am, I like the white stripes version, of course the main reason to why I'll play that one more is that I own it, this I don't own. cool to watch this anyway...

  • At the beginning of the song, is Patti smiling about the horse-like sounds being made by the dancers?

  • This song was on an eBay commericial but I am not sure if it was her, it was definetly not the White Stripes though

  • this is much better!

  • Saucy and cutting for the era. Makes me wonder how subordinate the women really were back then.

I don't know how folks can compare the two versions. They are very different and aimed at different crowds.

  • Coooooooooooooooonquest

  • Back when this song was recorded Mercury Records wasn't aiming at a Latino audience. They were aiming at Patti Page's huge, loyal following. The song pays tribute to its Latin influence but the record industry back then probably put Latin music on special labels. I think Freddy Fender came along about 10 years later. The record companies started to take notice. They then realized they could make money with this emerging crop of talent. One thing about the music industry: it is always changing.

  • talk about beauty and the beast, my god you can't be serious

  • PATTI PAGE > Jack White

  • JACK WHITE > PATTI PAGE

  • I'm sorry, but the White Stripes cover is better.

  • You don't have to excuse yourself for your great music taste ;)

    Well thsi version isn't bad either :) It's just not...rock ;)

  • Yeah, except that the White Stripes would have never made that song if Patti Page never created it.

  • J'adore cette chanson !

  • Great! When I heard the WS version on XM59, I knew it had to be a cover of something; I was guessing Nancy Sinatra. Thanks for posting this.

  • Wayne, It's such a breath of fresh air to see an eloquent, caring and POSITIVE little review. Thanks

  • great song and the white stripes version is great too!!!

  • the whites stripes version is more fun to listen to but this is cool too

  • hmm.

this song is good, but personally, i find it quite.. boring.

compared to the stripes version.. i mean, jack white is just too amazing for words.

  • The Latinos would find this very bland.Needs a bit more, ooooooooomph.

  • great

  • Wonderful to see this. Patti on her early T.V. shows lip synched to prerecordings because that resulted in the best sound. But here she is singing live. As for her forgetting the record, impossible. She has discussed it many times. It was issued as the other side of her cover of Joni James' "Why Don't You Believe Me" and got a double-sided hit of it. In that time, a three-hour record session involved the singer recording four sides live with the orchestra. That took real professionalism!

  • Patti Page lip-synched to recordings only in her 1955 filmed TV show. This is standard for film including the movies. See the old clip of Patti singing "You Belong to Me" on this site submitted by loc139. This is pre-1955 because Patti was not a blonde then. What may be confusing is that she may have sung live with a pre-recorded music track on early TV shows.

  • Which is what I wrote. But it wasn't a matter of a standard. Jack Rael quickly realized live performances would be far too expensive given the need to shoot parts of performances from several angles and impossible to match in film editing. Plus the sound was lousy. Prerecordings were the solution. In the studio Patti was known as "the perfect technician." She could hit the nail on the head with any song, harmonize with herself impeccably and match takes effortlessly.

  • I love how she performs, she looks so sophisicated and beautiful. Her voice is so wonderful.

  • A classic song, and now because some "popular" band does a cover of it this version is almost forgotten.

  • au contraire, it brings the song back. Many people have never heard of it before they heard the cover...so it makes them want to find the original and listen to it.

  • Yeah, that's what happened with me--I would have never discovered this if it weren't for the White Stripes.

  • omg <3 the strings!!

  • the biggest thing that makes the white stripes better then this is meg's drums. meg is awesome.

  • Don't get me wrong, I love the stripes, but Meg is a mediocre drummer at best.

  • i mean the stripes version of this song in particular is mostly made better by meg. Megs drumming makes the song... better, i dunno.

  • Oh I see. Right on.

  • didnt knew The stripes converd it but this is good to,... i mean it different

i prefer the stripes's cover but nice to see the original :)

  • hahha i had noo idea the stripes did a cover on conquest..it seems so, their style or something..ha, thats awsome

  • this song was used in an ebay commercial.

  • I also didn't know it was a cover.

She is great but still I love Jack White the most ;)

  • omg it was a cover???

how amazing is that? A woman in the 50's made this up, it's soo awesome. Too bad barely anyone knows

  • well 18,000 do now! Very glad I found this footage and put it up!

  • The woman didn't write this song, Corky Robbins did. Patti Page just performed it.

  • @masharocks No, we do know about it, you just didn't.

  • Hmmmm...

  • the white stripes song is def sped up which i like but i like thegirl singing it better.

  • whered u even find this?

    sweet!

  • a friend gave it to me.

  • Holy shit!crazy Original version!Nice post!

  • It's always fun to listen to the old versions ^^

  • i like the white stipes version this kinda slow i think the white stripes sped it up a bit

  • gotta love the classics!

  • Wow!Awesome!both versions!

  • i like both versions.

  • I like a girl in a nice tight corset, but the Stripes def improved this song a bit. I saw them at MSG, awesome.

  • I don't know about improvement but they definitely met the standard. They are amazing, still have my ticket stub from MSG 11th row!

  • i think that both are great

  • her lisp is awesome

  • Rule of thumb: the cover is NEVER better than the original.

  • not true

  • yes it is.. without to origional theres no cover >.>

  • well obviously, but that doesn't mean the artist who is doing a cover can't have a really good interpretation of the song and change it, or make improvements on it.

  • case in point "Respect" was written and recorded by Otis Redding but will always be thought of as Aretha Franklin's song even though she covered it. The same would go for "All Along the Watchtower" written by Dylan made famous by Hendrix. Lastly, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra's whole careers were spent covering other people's music. I'm sure you could find dozens of songs originally recorded by other artists that will always be recognized by their versions.

  • All Along the Watchtower

  • Soo good. Should have used this in Kill Bill

  • im a stripes fan, but i still like this version better. just the way it was supposed to be. the voice is so great. you can tell she really worked for it, its not like today (this rant isnt about the stripes just randomness) when we can alter it and junk. i just like the old and the magical

  • yes - everything seemed so much more natural back then.

  • littleshoe: That's cause they didn't have all the recording technology they do today. Nothing wrong w/ today's music [for the most part], but when you hear a song on a CD or radio and then hear them sing it the same way ['cause sometimes it sounds different] live in concert or on TV, it seems so much better.

  • yea, i heard this on a ebay comercial and had to hear it again. feal the same as you do.

  • it always amuses me when people think artists can just sing each others songs.

    OF COURSE THEY GOT PERMISSION.

  • dont let the goths get her down? she gave them permission to do the song you dumb fuck.

  • I never knew that. I wonder what she thinks of it.

  • I heard an interview between the lead singer of the Stripes and a guy on the radio. Basically he actually called Patti Page and asked her about the song, and she actually didn't remember it. Because back in Patti's time they'd record for a single or record within hours and crank it out, so she was just in the studio and out. But he talked to her some more and got her blessing.

  • that is interesting, thanks.

  • It's kinda interesting how both versions sound very similar but the Stripes were able to put a modern sound to it, while preserving the core of the song. either way, both versions are cool...kudos to the stripes for covering a song from the 50s

  • I'm glad the White Stripes revived this song - their version gives it a whole new edge, but this is still good

  • MAN !!! This is GREAT. Patti Page was and still is THE RAGE.

  • WOW, Patti Page really had it in 1952, and still has it in 2008. She's AMAZING. YOU GO GIRL. This show is 56 years old. FANTASTIC.

  • Awesome! White stripes dont even get close!

  • No shit! Patti rules

  • we love patti

    go patti go

dont let the goths get you down

  • Hey, great to see a clip of Patti Page actually doing the song she introduced!

  • I had no idea it was a cover until Juile Kramer from WFNX in Boston said it on the radio, Thats really cool that The White Stripes covered it.

  • oh yeah

  • wow. I didn't know patti page made the original. I agree with FUCKYOU.lol nice name.

This DOES sound like the White Stripes's version. missing guitar n drums, but it still kix ass.

  • Naw, it has guitar, just the acoustic kind.

  • This is the reason why The White Stripes are so great, they make younger generations check out videos like this. Same thing when they covered "One more cup of coffee". You think kids did'nt check out Bob Dylan after that song? The White Stripes are the best modern band out there. NO DOUBT. By the way this kicks ass.

  • I'm not a huge fan of the Stripes, but I dig the fact they appreciate Patti etc.

  • your retarded

  • I wouldn't go that far, but he/she is certainly wrong.

  • You know what i mean. I love the white stripes with all my heart, but good music is good music.

  • White Stripes seem to be good at taking mediocre songs and making them kickass by adding a lot of overdriven electric guitar. (and in this case, some mexican horns, too)

  • yeah i agree imp0cat. Think whitestripes put a diff spin with male vocals. i feel theres a different emotion behind it.

  • I think it sounds a lot like the stripes version, excewpt without the guitars and the drums. Love both of them

  • yep

  • this is great

  • Superb!
