I have been watching a lot of your videos, but I have one question: is there a specific way to release the forehand throw? when I release, the disc tends to tap the knuckle of my thumb then wobble in the air a little. It doesn't really affect accuracy, but every now and then the disc dives to the side.
im in the navy seabees stationed in california, a big Florida Gators fan, and play with a bunch of friends out here. i enjoyed your videos and hope to improve my game tremidously. i was wondering how i get some of the Forida Gators Ultimate Frisbee shirts.
IMO the left to right scoober is almost useles. Better to throw a backhand there. What is great though is a right to left scoober, because that is the easiest imaginable break pass if you are forced backhand and the defender is standing on the left of the atacker, so the atacker has a easy time catching.
You say release it vertical for distance, and you may be thinking that, but if you freeze the video right when you release it (3:38), it's most certainly not vertical. I see this a lot: people say one thing and even visualize it that way, but they do another thing. The forward is another great example where people say one thing but, when you look carefully at a video frozen right at the moment of release, it's not how they said. This can be very confusing for people learning it the first time.
@jrdx You really should release it vertically for the most distance, because that lets it cut through the air well and then turns over and not double helix. I imagine because Brodie doesn't toss up the scoober very often during the game he doesn't practice throwing it for distance, and it's very hard to apply a lot of force because it's a very awkward motion. He just defaulted to a motion for his body more like the backhand.
@jrdx actually this is a common thing in teaching most of the sports, and usually tends to help people a lot more than confusing them, even though i understand your point. Usually it only get confusing when you watch a close up, or slow-motion video. In teaching tennis for example we always tell students to "follow through the ball and lead it into the direction we want it in". Obviously thats nonsense, as your movement after contact doesnt affect the ball at all. But it really helps them.
Hi. I have a question. In a Frisbee game, what type of throws do you normally use? I know a couple of throws (flick, hammer, backhand, that's it,) but these other throws I see you demonstrate, do you think I need to learn them to become a pro Frisbee player?
@0gravity1994 The ones I use most are the forehand, backhand, hammer and lefty backhand. If the other team plays a lot of zone I will probably throw a few scoobers here and there.
@DirtRacerProductions Discraft is a great brand for ultimate frisbees. They make the Ultrastar, which is the official disc of the USA Ultimate team. So your best bet is one of those.
I first learned of the scoober when my first coach said its a novelty throw with almost no use. That was the only piece of bad advice i got from him. The scoober is my favorite break mark throw. Even though I've been using this throw for 7 or 8 years I still found this video incredibly helpful. The flight path segment was extremely useful. Thanks Brodie.
i watched this video yesterday. i had a game today and tossed a 20 yard scoober for the game winning goal. everyone was in shock and awe. thanks for teaching me the scoober
@kurodox No there isn't. I think 4 is the optimal with 3 handlers outside the zone (this is how we roll). Any more and there isn't much space to move. Either a) the defender calls for pick or b) two guys charge at the same time thus preventing any passes.
Will you please make a video on how to optimize your throwing face? In most pictures of people in the act of throwing a disc, their facial expressions are laughable. Tips on how to look like a badass when throwing a frisbee so I can look better in pictures would be appreciated.
Great video Brodie....Question for you. Is there any reason an upside-down hammer cannot accomplish everything a scoober can? Apart from the wind up over the head, the hammer seems to be the same throw. And I think I can throw a hammer off quickly with some force off without taking a step, unlike the scoober. I'm not criticizing the scoober...just asking, since I have never learnt this throw.
@bradythestrak Short Distance hammers are much harder than scoobers and they have lower release points. The reason is that hammers need time to turn over and with short distance, there is no time, so it has to be released flatter. Your wrist has limited flexibility so to get it flatter you have to bend your arm more. This results in a lower release. But a scoober can be thrown with a high release quickly and flat because the angle is easier on your wrist.
This definitely shows me the value of a scoober to break a mark...one day I'm sure any handler worth anything will have this down solid even in wind...zone irrelevance(?)..guess I'll go work on it at league; I'm sure Joel can help me refine my technique...and your bro is a bit interesting dude...
