  • thanks so much for this video..my grandson will be 1 yr in march and he is being implanted on march 22 2012 and turned on 3 weeks after that...i am so excited and cant wait for the day he can say "mema"...

  • This such a wonderful video. I think every parents decision for their child who is deaf of HH is their own to make. Joshua obviously was very happy with your decision!! And that is what matters. I couldn't imagine not giving your child the gift of hearing if you are given that decision to make, but I am the mother of a child who lost his hearing at age 8 and I am not given that choice to make as he is severely disabled and they won't approve the surgery for him. Good decision mom and dad!

  • PLEASE! can you tell us how is he now, after almost 3 years? thanks and GBY

  • he is soooo freaking adorable! whatever decision you made, you made it with the best of your judgement. :)

  • I love this video, i really almost cried. My favorite part is when he bobs his head to the music & gets mad when it's turned off. You made the right choice in getting the implant. He looked so happy. Thanks for sharing. God bless

  • It is a very cute video. I am an older adult. I got mine when I was 24 years old.... the switch on experience was totally different for me, I hated it. But down the road, I am glad I got it as my brain learned the sounds. Now I just got my 2nd one three days ago, recovering from surgery now.

  • That was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

  • Take That! this is beautiful.

  • I don't see how you could ever have doubted this decision. He now can grow up as normally and not have all the difficulties the deaf face. He is so precious. I have a friend who is deaf from childhood and he has been held back by his deafness. He is very smart and good looking and I know and he knows that he has been passed over for promotions at work just as an example of what your son won't have to deal with. God bless you and your gorgeous son..

  • Never let anyone question your decision. The look on his face should be all you need. What a great looking little guy. I wish you all the best!

  • so heartwarming!

  • Really beautiful! I hope he enjoys it!

  • man , thats the worlds least wriggly baby. I hope he enjoys a world of sound

  • ...I never thought I would cry watching someone listen to Springsteen...

  • Oh what awesome parents to make this very difficult choice for their adored son. He loves the music! This was great. My 19 year old nephew is on utube too having his implant activated and I can tell you your son will thank you for all these years of hearing!!! Don't speed the time!!

  • Shame on the five people who disliked this enchanting film...a whole wonderful new world has opened up to that beautiful little boy.

  • God bless him and you as a family!

  • Great little guy and he seems so satisfied

  • you have a beautiful son :) I'm so happy for you guys

  • Oh my god! God bless this sweet little thing, and of course his family! I started crying happy tears when he nodded his head to the music! ♥

  • How sweet

  • The musis part hd me tearing up =)

  • Yeah it made me tear up to.

  • you know this is something special when a video like this makes a college kid tear up...

  • Thanks for bringing a little joy in my life today.

  • i saw ur video and u have made me smile and cry. we have started the process for a cochlear implant (my son is 6months old) its been so hard for everyone but this video has given me hope for him. thankyou

  • Amazing! When the music turned on, he started nodding his head to it, like dancing! God bless him and your whole family!

  • I am studying to be an audiologist and I can't wait to work with kiddos like Joshua! I think you have done something amazing for your child and you have opened up a whole new world of opportunities for him! I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with being Deaf. I actually have great respect for the Deaf culture. As hearing parents it's very hard to have a child with a hearing loss. You know what all the world has to offer and you just want what is best for your little boy. Kuddos to you!:)

  • congratulations

  • Hello He is freaky handsome he he he... I laughed when he heard the first time about the drum, it was wonderful time... Now I would like to see how he is doing now with cochlear implant...

  • I sobbed. This video is so wonderful.

  • As our 14 month old daughter is going into Crosshouse at the end of November for her double implant a family friend had told me to look at this video of Joshuas switch on. I couldnt believe it was the same little boy we met on the recent WSDCS family day at Inverkip. I know how difficult it is to make that kind of decision for your child but after seeing Joshua now it is such an encouragement that we are making the right decision.

  • He is so adorable and I love how he dances to the music! He looked so happy!

  • awe, it brought tears to my eyes. i have watched it 3 times and i love how he starts dancing to the music! what a moving video and a beautiful little bot :)

  • smooney357....thank you so much for sharing your story with me. i appreciate it. good luck to you and your family. God Bless all of you.

  • Cheers to you Joshua.. I wish you a nice life!

  • such a hot mom

  • really cool what you guys have done for your child...i wish you all the best =)

  • he likes the music!

  • the baby is soooooooooooooooooooo cute and adorable.May God bless him with good health all through out his life and I wish him all the success..and well done to the family!you have been through alot so wish you all the happiness

  • @smooney357 what the hell Have I done wrong the Guy was saying whoever give the baby his Happiness is evil I am sorry that is just out right wrong i think you should delete that comment because your comment is a reply to someone else I did not know that why don't you reply instead of writing there name in a message people have spam your own comment Because people don't know what your saying they think your saying whoever gave the baby happiness is evil thats why I said that just look

  • @smooney357 when i read that people were leaving negative comments, i have no idea why they would. if you were deaf right now, wouldn't you give anything in the world to hear your family/friends' voices? i don't understand why you wouldn't. this device doesn't hurt the baby at all.. he doesn't have to be in pain everyday. its something that helps him! youtube is full of negative comments left by people who are sad and hate life. IM HAPPY FOR JOSHUA. don't listen to inane negativity.

  • @smooney357 i was looking at videos of youtube of different people hearing for the first time, and it made me so happy that today we have the technology to give people this incredible gift. to be able to hear your parents, siblings, best friends..one day he will be able to hear his wife speak. if joshua could thank you now he would.

  • You definitely made a tough decision and judging by the happy look on your baby's face, it was the right decision. Why would you deny him the joy of hearing the birds sing, the crickets chirping, music, his parents' voices, being sung "happy birthday" to? So many joys ahead for you all. Congratulations and many blessings!

  • To the parents, I wouldn't even bother reading the posts anymore, it just makes you feel like you have to defend your decision. You obviously made a selfless and courageous decision out of deep love and compassion for your child.

  • To the person who said the parents have made the choice, not the child. If your son had a heart defect, would you wait until the child was old enough to make the decision whether to operate or not? What about a cleft palate? Do you fit your child for a prosthetic early on or do you wait until he's old enough to decide if he wants to be disabled in case he needs to have a sense of "community?"

  • OMG! the way he bobs his head to the music! =)

    he's so adorable

  • the next time I hear music it will be different. we take so many things for granted and forget how important is hearing!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just wanted to say I am so proud of you for taking this decision. these people do not see joshua everyday neither they have to deal with all the situations that being deaf carries.

If that was my situation I would have wanted my parents to give me the opportunity of hearing and living a normal life. Life is already tough with people withou disabilities, I can't imagine for people that suffer some kind of condition. This gives Joshua the chance to live a normal life.

  • My younger step-brother has had a CI since he was about this age (he's sixteen now), and it made his life radically easier. There were times when people didn't fully understand why he had it, especially when he was a little kid, but in the last few years he's blossomed amazingly. I certainly don't think my stepmother regrets doing this, and I, for one, am glad to be able to have conversations with him. When I first met the family, I wouldn't have been able to communicate without it.

  • 15 (or 13) years from now will seem like you did fast forward.

  • ahaha when hes in the car hearing the music, you can see his brain going crazy! so beautiful

  • religion child indoctrination thats abuse, this video is the work of human empathy at its best.

  • This is awesome. Congratulations.

  • Wow. My son is 2 years old and one of his favorite thing to do right noe is sing with us. I can't begin to understand how hard it must have been for you ti have to take this decision. But he seems really happy and he is beautiful. Congratulation!

  • What a wonderful video and how wonderful for Joshua! As a drummer... guitarist... and singer... all I can say is, I so want to jam with Joshua someday! I've got a nice big drum kit and he's welcome to come pound on it... FULL FORCE! God be with you!!

  • i dont think anyone can really have an opinion to a certain situation until theyve been in it....but based on the look on his face he looks so happy, and hes able to connect with his parents on a level he was never able to before...its hard enough being a kid growing up , just imagine doing it without one of your senses. now granted there are those who function perfectly without hearing but the parents made the decision and its no one elses. and it looks like it turned out to be the right one.

  • TO ALL THE HATERS ON HERE:

You have no clue until you have a child that is hard of hearing/deaf. Don't judge someone for doing something for their child that they believe is in the best interest. If you had a child that was born blind and found out they could have a transplant to make them see, you would do it in a heartbeat.

Not to mention that if you let a child decide when they are older they may reject the implant because the language balloon ends around 5 years old. Think b4 u speak.

  • My son is hard of hearing, and I know how you feel. You want the best for your child. We thought a lot about a Cochlear Implant and after we finally decided on it, we found he didn't qualify. Which is good and bad in many ways. Bad cause I was hoping he would hear better than he is. Good cause it means he can hear better than most children that need one. But it was a hard decision for us, and I know how you felt. I applaud your decision. Praying for you and your family.

  • I think it's ridiculous for people on here to judge this parents and accuse them of abuse. I'm aware of the controversy of the implant, but each family has a unique situation. If this family had relatives or friends in the deaf community, if they had access to and could afford sending their child to a deaf school, then MAYBE it would be better for the child to remain deaf. The point is we can't judge others w/o knowing their situation. This baby is likely going to have a wonderful life.

  • Nice video, too bad there's so much music track and so little information.

Are you trying to make music videos, or communicate?

  • Can i have your email address please?Because my daughter like your son ...:(

  • I am happy for you forever cute baby... I wish your life easy more and happy more everyday ...

  • Fantastic! There are a lot of haters out there who just hate for the sake of hating, but one look at that cute baby hearing the drum beating, you know you did the right thing. By the time he's in his teens, science will have advanced enough to where they can biologically replicate hearing. I was born 50% deaf and would love the chance to hear in stereo instead of mono lol.

  • you did the right thing.

  • technology is amazing. =)

  • @Dinhhhz what is up with you being against the fact that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being Deaf?

  • @kalijasin Your logic is so incredibly flawed that it's nearly impossible to comprehend. So, God gave us feet yet we invented the internal combustion engine to transport us. We invented the telescope to learn more about the stars that surround us. We invented the microscope to learn more about what makes us who we are and to treat disease. Yet people like you who quote scripture to validate yourselves are right? Nobody cursed this child, they allowed him to experience life more fully.

  • @pjconnor74 I dont know where you get that crap from because I never said anything even similar to any of that.

  • What a beautiful little boy!

As a parent, we have to make the best decision that we feel that we can for our children. I chose to get my diabetic son an insulin pump. I chose to have my daughter's feet operated on to correct a minor birth defect. I've chosen their diets, their books (when they were young) and everything else.

In the end, we all do the best that we can. I'm sure that you made the right decision for *your* child. Don't bother with the jerks.

  • SO wonderful!

How on earth can anyone be against this?

    Jesus healed. Why wouldn't we?

  • To think that people can actually think that giving a person the gift of hearing, that this imperfect world has taken from them, is evil or abuse is incomprehensible. Do you think this is what God wanted for them? To be deaf? NO! He created a PERFECT man, unfortunately imperfection has created all of these health problems that surround us, it saddens God to see that us humans have to go through all these physical problems. To the parents your child will thank you for loving them and helping them

  • @luismendezjr If God wanted them hearing then they would not of been born deaf. God likes diversity as he wants to make life interesting for us .. that's why he allows some to be deaf and others to be hearing.

  • @kalijasin Hardly. If that was the case, then no one should wear glasses, no one should go to the dentist, no one should seek treatment for cancer, set a broken leg, fix a cleft palate. Seems to me Jesus himself healed a deaf man (Mark 7:31-35)

  • @patkashtock The bible says not to curse the Deaf (lev. 19:14) but you've seemed to ignore that suggesting Deaf people are broken.

  • @kalijasin what is up with you being so against the fact this kind of technology gives a child the ability to hear ?

  • Comment removed

  • @kalijasin There's nothing wrong with being deaf morally . Deafness is a disability . His parents didn't want to go through life not being able to hear music, sounds, laughter . They're not mocking deaf people or putting them down, they're giving him a better life . Get your head out of your ass and stop thinking that everyone hates people who are deaf or something .

  • @Dinhhhz You don't need to be deaf to understand music. There have been lots of deaf musicians throughout history. Ever heard of, for example, Beethoven? And since not hearing music is the only example you can give of Deaf people being limited Deaf people are clearly not disabled. One limitation alone is not enough to qualify as being disabled. Disabilities limit you in all aspects of life in one way or another not in only one thing.

  • Damn double strokes at that age...

  • I honestly don't understand why people would think it's a bad thing for a deaf child to be able to hear. I am not part of the deaf community, so I have never heard any reasoning behind not wanting to turn on their hearing. I think that as a parent we want our children to be whole and healthy, inside and out. You have made the decision which you thought best for your son, and I think it's awesome!

  • what a cute kid ..dont worry smooney he is going to be happy ..u did the right thing ..which is what you thought was best for him

  • @kalijasin

Are you deaf and maybe someone made the decision not to give you this gift and you feel jealous and bitter? You should seek help for this as this is not a healthy way to be! I can't understand how you could possibly comment when you know nothing about this boy, (not now a baby) a strong confident happy little boy that if you ever got the pleasure to meet you would realise that 'having this baby implanted' is the best thing that could have ever happened to him.

  • kalijasin, you could at least give some reasons for your thoughts, but we are strong enough as a family to know we have done the correct thing for our son, HE looks for it every morning, HE can talk and hear everything in this wonderful world, your comments are nasty and do not even count as constructive criticism...so no evil from these proud parents..Only joy..

  • @smooney357 The real abuse is the internet anonymity that gives unequal people an equal voice.

  • @smooney357 Burn in hell and I will Personally light the fire

  • @inTHEwrongGENERATION ...What????

  • @nacielynn he is saying that whoever gave this baby happy is evil

  • @smooney357 More power to the both of you as parents...don't let anyone's horrid comments get you down on your decision!

  • @kalijasin

Everyone makes decisions every day for their children. What school they go to, what they watch, what they eat. We do it in our children's best interest. Nothing is wrong with being deaf. I applaud all decisions made in their children's best interest. I find it sad that you don't even know these people/child and are judging them.

All people that are deaf are NOT the same. I have talked to many CI teens & they are happy with their parents tough decisions.

    Think about it.

  • @kalijasin This is not abuse, some people choose to get an implant and that's they're choice not anyone else. If someone does not want an implant that was they're decision.

  • @candycloud19 Your argument is flawed because babies can't choose to be implanted. They are forced implanted by hearing parents.

  • The joy of music, rain on a dark night, people's laughter, food sizzling on a grill, applause, pages turning, footsteps, long summer nights, cheesy christmas musicals, birds in a forest, lots of ice in a glass....all that and more is what this child has been given. :) God bless you.

  • Can I ask why wouldn't you? "older generation feel that they are losing a large part of their community," just doesn't cut it for me sorry. It's about Joshua not the "older generation".

  • He got upset when he couldn't hear the music....amazing...simply profound and amazing.

  • Freakin amazing, you have a beautiful son. He will do amazing things with his life. God bless you and your family.

  • Who could POSSIBLY have a split opinion about this? Seriously. Think about any gift you could give your child, and then increase that a thousandfold and you STILL wouldn't be close to giving your child the gift of hearing. Good for you, and good for your little boy.

  • OMG This made me cry!! What Joy I saw in his eyes when the music came on!!! god bless you little man! And you too mom and dad!

  • the moment that baby started bobbing his head tp the music in the car was magical, made me laugh, grin and tear up all at the same time

  • God Bless you and this beautiful boy!!! Thank God for the doctor who developed this device. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing Joshua dancing to the music!

  • NOW YOU ARE MORE HUMAN LIKE US

  • you made the right choice, dont let anyone tell you otherwise. the role of a parent is to give their child every opportunity possible and if u have the chance to give ur child the opportunity to hear why wouldnt you? its a wonderful gift. and judging by the way his eyes lit up, i would say he agrees with me. good luck joshua, ur such a cuite.

  • I think you guys are making great choices for your son. First you give him the gift of hearing & then for his first time hearing music, you choose a Bruce Springsteen song.

  • I think he will be a musician. He already knows how to follow the rhythm!

  • Cute baby! Thanks to his parents and scientist this guy is hearing our noisy world! The more you listen and the more you understand... the more quiet you remain ;)

  • By the way - I know several CODAs (hearing children of deaf adults) and they are accepted in the deaf community JUST FINE. If Daddy had a leg missing, would you chop baby's off so he can fit in with the amputees? I know many deaf people feel being deaf is not a bad thing; but hearing is like knowing another language and culture. Why deny your child the chance to live in both worlds? To make *you* happier? It should be about what's best for the child, even if it isn't what we parents might like.

  • It's only small-minded people who think a child with an implant can no longer be part of the deaf community. To wait is not letting them choose. Adulthood's too late, they'll never have "baby learning" time again, the only time they can develop normal speech. Adults can choose; babies can't. To parents who decide not to implant, you've denied them the chance at normal speech. If you are *really* convinced they won't understand your community, do the implant then turn it off at the dinner table.

  • his reaction to the music brought tears to my eyes - this little guy will thank his parents when he is old enough to understand. this took courage.

  • What a tough decision for any parent this would be.... These parents gave thier child the gift of sound. That is amazing! ♥

  • I am 15 years old with bilateral profound hearing loss.... Except for the difficult sound for me to spell out ( S's) No one can tell I wear hearing aids... Your child started out younger then me, so you can except even better results. Embrace him. Also, dont forget he is going to struggle at times and you aren't going to know how he feels. Just be as understanding as you can be.

  • I do believe we are born with disabilities for a reason... However, if you could give your child the power of hearing or any one of our senses I think we all would.... I know I would do ANYTHING for my Children....

  • This is lovely; thank you for sharing it!

  • I think you made the right choice! I would've done the same!

  • Whatever choice you make for your son is yours, and your family's. This video is amazing to watch, I hope for nothing but the best!

  • This video is so cute, i love the part where he starts moving his head to the music! I'm surprised people have a negative view on this device, i hate that everyone feels the need to share their opinion when no one asked for it, especially when its negative. But that's the internet for you, everyone hiding behind their computer screen suddenly have balls. Anyways, I'm really happy for you and your son. Love your video :-)

  • Adrino11 what is your point? Trust us we know our son is deaf, but we are trying to give him the best chance of communicating with 90% of the population.. ie orally, and we know for a fact we have made the correct decision.

  • @smooney357 dont worry, i was implanted at age five and guess what :) i am 20 years old and still wear Ci :) Good luck with your wonderful journey with Joshua. You have made a right decision.

  • once CI is off from his ear, who is he? Deaf person. Of course.

  • @adrnino11

if you wear glasses, please take them off.

  • This put a huge smile on my face

  • Thanks for sharing this. It's BEAUTIFUL! :)

  • Some of the older generation feel that they are losing a large part of their community, I can understand it to a certain extent, but we live I a world of technology, so we should use it.

  • @smooney357 So then should people use technology that makes them deaf???

  • why would anyone be against this? could someone please explain to me. thanks. I'd really appreciate it

  • I am literally in tears. The part where he heard the music and started dancing...oh my gosh. What a beautiful thing for your son. I am so very happy for you. <3

  • This video was amazing!!! I'm so happy for you!!! I'm praying for you!!

  • Very beautiful!! Made me cry when he heard the music for the first time! I hope all is well!

  • he is beautiful..well done to ye all, i wish him every bit of success in the future.

  • I know this will sound so naive and so cheesy...but this is what human beauty is all about .. we CAN do things to make people happier and better and enjoy life. We all CAN...

Money and power, research and development and companies and tax and society and everything we know.... its all worthwhile if we can all work together and allow things like this to happen.

  • Hey, I just wanted to say that you made the right decision for you. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. The gift of hearing is one that a lot of people take advantage of. I hope everythig goes well for your son. My mom works for Cochlear in America, and I can deffinately say that I'm going to show her this vid.

  • @purple1316 thank you for taking the time to view our video....the first song he hear on the radio was land of hope and dreams..i think that says it all......

  • This was awesome! Just got the news yesterday that my 2 1/2 yr old son is FINALLY a candidate for CI. He has a bilateral severe-profound loss. I cant wait to get this process over with. They said by Christmas he will be implanted. What a gift!

  • @TishaLicious420 great news, honestly joshua looks for his CI every mornng when he gets up....so we know we hav emade the correct decision....hope all goes well with son..god bless

  • YaaY! Just remember, he will always need you. My sister who is vey-deaf, lipreader.

I noticed that she misses alot. She won't say it but I know. She's well. Yet I wish I was more "there" as we grew up. My parents were a-1. Yet they to didn't know everything. As we are now older. I didn't say wiser. She is still my sister. I'm glad she lives near. Between you and I, I'm there for her. We've never spoke re it, yet I know she trusts "my reaction." On most things. All you need is Love.

  • Between the way he took to that drum and the way he reacted to the music in the car, I think you have a little rock star on your hands! Glad it's working out so well. He's adorable.

  • forget the music ...just happy for Joshua and hope he has a great future ...thanks for sharing this moment

  • Not about the music, it's about the result....thanks for watching tho.

  • Wonderful...beautiful. Brought tears to my eyes....

  • Complete 100% awesomeness!!!

Now let's just hope he has better taste in music than his parents!!! ;-)

  • Bravo!!!

  • He's totally gonna be a drummer.

  • My three year old son just received bilateral implants almost three weeks ago. You have any advice for us? What should we expect during the activation? Thanks for the positive and inspiring video.

  • i was born hearing but started to go deaf at the age of 4, i had my first implant when i was 14 years old, now, nine years later i am in the process of getting my second one done, hopefully in the new year. i would definately recommend it to anyone as it has greatly improved my life. your little boy is so cute, and the bit where he hears music in the car for the first time brought tears to my eyes :) xx i hope everything continues to go well for him, bless xxxx

  • Thank you so much, Joshua is doing very well and is starting to say a few words like mum and bye, it is amazing, hope all goes well with your 2nd implant. thank you again

  • My neighbors (the mother and father, neither of the children) are deaf. One chose to get an implant, and one did not. I have no opinion on what is "wrong or right" for everyone, but your little boy seems so happy!

  • Mel, sent me this to watch and it made my week, giving me the biggest smile. Love to you all and hope everything continues to go well for wee J. Remember and make sure he listens to some Big Country and The Beatles now! Lots of Love Karen and Bailey xxxxxxxxx

  • Wow, amazing! Erin and Gary just in from school and watched it, can't wait to see him again! Love to you all! xx

  • I'm curious why it was put on his left side?

  • He was supposed to be fitted with two, but they had problems locating the cochlear on the right side, so we had no choice on it being the left.

  • Was that during surgery they couldn't find it?

  • Yes opened the right side up, but cochlear was siitting awkwardly so they did not proceed.

  • Oh I see! Well, best of luck to him and to you!
