the thing is more cores is better. Even if these cores are slightly weaker. It simple math really. Suppose one super core that can do 2 instructions per nanosecond and then suppose two smaller cores that can do 1.1 instruction per nanosecond. Obviously the two smaller cores are faster together then the one big core. Big satelittes on earth ar made out of small tiles, not one piece. I saw this on MIT so I think that is pretty solid evidence.

More does not always means better, that's for sure...but some things must be said...

1 - The Intel E8200 is more expensive tham that Phenom X3

2 - The tested apps does not really take advantage of more tham 2 cores

It's like comparing for example, the Intel Quad Q6600 to the Phenom X2 550BE, the 2 cores of the 550BE are faster tham 2 cores of the Q6600, but the app is optimized for 4 cores, the Q6600 will have a better performance tham the 550BE.

It all depends on the CPU quality.

I have to say that I am extremely impressed with my Core 2 Duo as compared to my Phenom II x4. Not being a fan-boy but some-times, having 2 fast cores is better then 4 slow ones. My Core 2 duo @3.6ghz is alot better than my Phenom II quad @2.8ghz. Nothing uses more than 2 cores these days except video encoding/editing programs and some graphic design programs. So having expensive 2 cores FOR ME turned out to be a better option than having 4 cheap cores.

More cores is always better. A lot of new software and games made in the year 2010 are optimized for 4, 6, 8 or as many cores as you can possibly have. More cores will also get you ready for the future because future machines will have 16, 24, 32, 64 and even more cores. Multi-core revolution started about 4 years ago and it's just warming up for what's coming.

1. Technological process has nothing to do with amount of transistors. It has to do with less heat.

2. More transistors does not mean more performance. Its tied to architecture and task.

3. Same goes for cache, core2 and phenom use different cache schemata.

4. Clock speeds are irrelevant, there is always better clocked models. Its a subject of price.

5. Software performance has to do with how compiled the code is.For example on linux x3 8600 works 50% faster than c2d 8600 due to all cores used.

Comparing the prize of AMD and Intel, is that you pay almost 2x - 3x more for Intel by getting almost same "things" (Frames, Speed, etc.). For example, you buy AMD for 100$ (€) and Intel for 250$ (€) and play some games... The fact is, there is NO big diffrences bettwen Intel and AMD's, well maybe A BIT but not A LOT! I bought AMD phenom 2 550 Black Edition for 200€, which Intel Quad Core CPU would cost up too 300€ more. And you would get almost everything same out of it. Hope it helped

@adolf512: That was the case between the Athlon xp's and 64's against intels Pentium 4. Although clock for clock performance, todays cpus, core 2's are faster the the Phenom I's. Phenom II's x2 are a little faster than core 2's. Although price wise, amd better as you could get quad for the same as intel dual cores.

BTW: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ would = intel Pentium 3.2ghz. Numbers at the end of the cpu "3200" means intel p4 equivalent in MHZ.

All these kind of test are very subjective, the cores work acording to the mainboard, the OS and the kind o programs (32 bits, 64 bits, 86 bits) it depends on everything...maybe on an Intel Core 2 Duo runs better because apps are more compatible with it but not because is better than AMD Phenom

Whereas the Phenom II X4 965 is about $196 on Newegg, has a faster clock speed, and lower caches. Now multiply that AMD processor by 5, and they're about the same price.
