  • Awesome video! I have a few questions.

I have a couple hard drives that I want to share through samba.

I'm a total noob with linux btw.

So i have a sata hdd 100gb for my os (ubuntu)

I have a 2tb hdd for media (movies)

    I have a 1tb hdd for music

How do I add these other hard drives to my samba.

when you do mkdir, im not too sure what to put lol.

    Could u help me out?

  • Hot girl and linux! Please marry me!

  • Why not nfs?Samba is Windows software.

  • @MrKurtdriver Samba is not Windows software.

  • ...u gave me a boner

  • i love sexy girls which wants to learn technical things this is so sexy !!!! :P kiss from Zagreb :O

  • Is the server name absolutely necessary? I mean I dont think I have a servername in my network, just a workgroup.

    Thanks,

    Sachin

  • Thank you for making this video tutorial, works like a charm! Finally somebody who understands what I want and failed to do in the past 2 years. To (re)start samba i had to use "sudo start smbd" though. Probably changed over the years.

  • OMG She's so hot! she's wrong though. Samba doesn't work to share files. :((( I installed samba on Ubuntu 11.10 and it can't access my windows shares. My windows machines can access the windows shares but can't access my Ubuntu shares. Samba kinda sucks.. anyways.. she has a sexy voice :O

  • @Shakeitupyes then ur dumb

  • @novachevyguy This coming from someone who can't even spell "you're" properly. I'm so highly offended by what you said to me, you are clearly so much more superior in knowledge and intellect than myself. Wow.

  • @Shakeitupyes that's right, I am.. There! Did I spell everything all good and nice that time?

  • @Shakeitupyes What happens when you try to access Windows/. What version of Windows? Any error messages? Inbox me if you wish

  • @Shakeitupyes Maybe it's due to your firewall settings? I have successfully done it.

  • you just gave me a happy fun time in my pants

  • I have a linux, which means i get laid as often as i have to reboot my computer...

  • thanks ur helpful and fit :) xx

  • wow, a beautiful woman who uses linux , will you marry me? you are just the same as me except you are a girl, we were made for each other hahahaha we are both very good looking computer nerds lolol there aren't many of those but we are!!!

  • @saggz20

hee hee heee. lol best of luck mate :-)

  • can i have your email id please thank you

  • Samba was originally designed to take advantage of the Windows SMB share, just a little tidbit for you all.

  • ok..i know I'm a noob with linux...but wtf..

    Reading package lists... Done

    Building dependency tree

    Reading state information... Done

samba is already the newest version.

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: linux-headers-2.6.38-8 linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic

Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

What does this mean? Do I have it?

  • @jameszip9yahoocom nvm figured it out. XD!

  • @jameszip9yahoocom

yep. exactly. "samba is already the newest version" everything is written

  • @jameszip9yahoocom If you are using Ubuntu. Just open the file manager (Nautilus), right on the folder containing the files you want to share, click on Sharing Options.

  • or make a shared partition

  • sudo service smbd restart

    sudo service nmbd restart

this is the command you need to use in 11.04

  • You, funny girl!! Keep it a going too!!

  • Nixie Pixel is my Linux Guru

  • Just a heads for anyone that reads the comments. Did (basically) this (using the GUI) in LinuxMint11, there are a few things you'd expect to see (Sharing Options in the right-click menu or a Sharing tab in the properties window)... They're just not there (IME), but the share WILL be working. Finally figured out that it was working when I checked it out of frustration (sharing videos to my xbox running XBMC).

So, yeah. There you go... was frustrating the hell out of me for a while there.

  • Whats up with the big 80's fake lashes

  • Is your day job in IT?

  • She's so pretty.

  • God, you people are horny... You act like you've never seen a female before

I´ve never seen a female using Linux before!

  • @Lovelypovely Too true. Can't argue with that.

  • @ashinms It's nerd candy...

  • @ashinms Well i have never seen one that is a nerd and hot :)

  • @Vortex93 All nerds are hot O_o

  • sudo -i marry | pixie

  • lol everyone keeps asking her to marry them. Don't you guys know that you have to put sudo in front of any request?!?!

  • nixie, your a smart cookie, well done

  • as soon linux is in the game of sharing files, possibilities are endless..

  • sudo chown -R demilord /home/nixie

  • I have a good one for you Nixie... mount a windows share, or any other SMB share, to you linux machine. By default you cannot do this.

  • chmod +X NixiePixel

And this video was awesome. Nice for newbs.

  • Damn you are so good !!!

I thought that only guys like me know those things and not sexy girls like you!

I am smarter than that but still you are above most girls :)

    lol

  • don't you think it would make more sense to zoom in on the shell instead of having this almost-unreadable text and blend in the commands at the bottom?

  • why i would do such low security filesharing on linux? windows right click: share it, done! bring more advanced tuts...this one here is for crap

  • Sexy Geek

  • How do I make it so that every directory I create within this shared one automatically has the same permissions set?

  • The Linux Princess =P

  • @Ohcommyway:how about chown NixiePixel $USERNAME & #or maybe a NFS Share?

  • sudo chown NixiePixel ohcomemyway

    command not found?

  • Hey I'm confused, What was attracted to the tutorial or you..lol

  • what a nerd lol

  • I like Ubuntu 10.10 Server 32-bit for my server (Cause my hardware sucks). I have it setup similar, however i have a headless server and share entire drives (also the USB ports, and the "Computer" directory). Quick and easy to work with (Windows 7 and SSH) One thing to note on setting up a headless server, you will need to edit fstab to mount your drives each boot, and edit the network config for a static IP.

Not only is it open source, it's a cool weekend project :D

  • i'M ALWAYS Suck @ Remembering commands

  • thanks! worked like a charm

  • Nixie, you got any ideas on getting Ubuntu 10.10 running on a dell optiplex gx 60 with the crappy intel video chip? I 've tried all kind of things. Maybe If I just set it up to boot in the same safe graphics mode the installer uses.. The Low budget intel chip can't handle the kernel & the whole GUI crashes with 10.10 on this box and others with these intel ( crappy) video chips.

  • @PRM2643 Have you tried the XUbuntu release? It does not require much of the hardware and runs perfectly on slow/old computers.

  • holly shittt, i got a boner from 4:24. lol just kidding, this babe is hotter then lava

  • Hi Nixie: Does this work when using VBox? I have a Mac host with Linux guest

  • hello i tried to share some files today i carefully inserted the files into the small holes on the back of the monitor but they are not appearing on the screen can you please help. i just want to send some files to yogi bear

  • thanks for the video..

  • @tunkusingha007 smooth...

  • How did such a gorgeous woman end up playing with linux. Talented, pretty, and smart.....thanks for sharing this with us! I'm a total newb learning to make this all work....THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! And kubuntu users will want to know that its kate to edit.

  • How did such a gorgeous woman end up playing with linux. Talented, pretty, and smart.....thanks for sharing this with us! I'm a total newb learning to make this all work....THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

  • i have a question. You know you are using ubuntu there? well , can you use any distro? say i wanted to use freedos , is that possible?

because to me it just seems like an unpack job

  • how about sharing internet connection i have vista ultimte in my home computer and linux 10 in my laptop so how i share the internet connection between them with cabels (not wifi)

  • Nixie- I am a SUPER NEWB. Things seemed to be going ok.

    ...start: Job failed to start

    Processing triggers for libc-bin ...

ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

    hsapley@hsapley-T5062:~$ sudo cp /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf_defaulthsapley@hsapley-T5062:~$ sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

    hsapley@hsapley-T5062:~$ sudo mkdir /myshare

    hsapley@hsapley-T5062:~$ sudo chmod 0777 /myshare

    hsapley@hsapley-T5062:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart

    sudo: /etc/init.d/samba: command not found

  • hey hows it going, loved the video. had a bit of trouble though. i am running mint so that might be the problem. the last two command lines did not work. sudo chmod 0777 /myshare and ben@ben-laptop ~ $ sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart. after i hit enter on the chmond line it did not ask me again for a password and after the restart command it told me it was an invalid command line. just wondering if you had any ideas? thanks a bunch!

  • hey there, i did a similar thing with open suse, i would love to get an opinion on it if possible??? as you sound as though u have more experience with samba servers than i do lol,

  • I made my own little file server with some old computers parts and hard drives. Installed Ubuntu 9.10 and used (obviously) samba. I used older IDE hard drives, the largest being 160GB (160, 80, 80, 60, 6<boot), using an IDE/SATA Raid card. Works perfectly. I can stream my entire music collection to iTunes, watch video from it, upload and download files from all my Ubuntu and Windows 7 Computers. Also shares my Printers on the network, which is REALLY nice. It's a great weekend project.

  • how can i make my own distro from files from my hdd to share my current aperance settings etc any ideas? i want it to incude all my updates and apt-gets and compiz fusion etc minus the private files like pics music etc ? help please :d

  • Haha, this is the best humor ever :D

  • 4:22 LOL

  • wow very good video also can u help me with apache on linux mint

i have it installed with mysql but i need to use port 2010 not default 80 as my isp blocks port 80 traffic coming from my apache2 any ideas for how i can do this (iu have edited files but none of it worked even after restarting). plz help you make sense with your videos unlike some other linux geniuses:P

  • Thank you so much Nixie, I tell all my friends about you!

  • Linux chick? Rulez!

  • Maybe you should include a 100% graphical configuration to not scare terminalphobic people off lol. only half serious... it would defeat the purpose of switching to Linux :productivity

  • sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart = command not found??????

  • @spindlegrinder Just set this up and hit the same brick wall needed to do sudo apt-get install samba4 and then using the command whereis samba I changed the path to one of the ones listed ie /usr/sbin/samba restart

    error cleared :-)

  • @OricTosh Thanks, what I'm trying to figure out is how to make an ubuntu home server that shows up in my network connections and I can just click on an icon there and send files to it and retrieve files to it but there is little information on this and the information I do find is very confusing, and too complicated can you help me please my only other option is feenas but I don't understand this either

  • @spindlegrinder I haven't yet be able to share files using Samba, I used the method in amzertech vid which is quite clean; during my time to get some sleep I struck on fundmental thing I belive you need that is a static IP. With this in place amzertech method it should work. I need to try it. Found this about NAS and freenas talks about NAS and has screen shoots showing how to set up freenas

  • does she remind anyone else of Codex?

  • I've seen other Linux videos that people do they aren't nearly as coherent as your videos ... don't misunderstand when i suggest that the fact that you're doing the videos makes the software seem less "threatening" (less anxiety causing) and your voice is just beats Mr. Geekoid Nasal Man ...

  • Thanks!

  • nice voice

  • aint nuthin sexier than a cute computer geek lol

  • there is nothing more sexier than to see a pretty lady like you explaining how to do Samba :)

    Keep up the good work!

  • i will marry her one day. She is so cute and sweet.

  • thank you so much

  • Thank You For Your teachings. Mamacita

I love LINUX . with you. Sexy

  • Hate Linux, but your voice is relaxing.

  • If you do throat fucking you can be my girl

  • @luigginacho

Oooooh, lucky her. Shut up, douche.

  • @raychik40k Now, if you can suck it all the way down your throat you can be my bitch too :D
