I bet the unit cost a lot, plus never mind what the cost of the 3M metal costs, anything from 3M is very costly I know because we sell a lot of 3m product in the marine supplies, and if a product they have is in demand they rase the price, take there fast cure silicon adhesave for marine use, it went up in price in one year by over 50% i asked our supplier why, they told us anything 3M in big demand they rase the price big time, so we went to the same product from Permitex at less then 1/2 cost

I order a wax type paper from Electro Chem Etch in CA. use an old dot matrix printer. Single use, but looks great. I just want to see this silk screen done. Might be worth buying. But not watching it done I have no idea how long it taskes and mess it makes.

I think the type of plastic is called acrylic and you can buy acryic sheets at more D.I.Y stores or art stores.But i don't think im 100% corecct so try surfing the web for ideas...
