It is possible that the vapor line is from the rapid heat expansion from the main lightning bolt causing the air to basically flash boil and vaporize.

I think (Dont quote me on this!)it is plasma resulting from the positive charge in the atmosphere. this is usually what resorts to ball lightning....but i must admit...i havent seen it like this before. Excellent!
