Yeah that Impala just wanted to get the snow off his back window :P
But on a more serious note, people seriously need to get a grip when it comes to winter driving, literally. You can't drive like you would in the summer and expect to do the same in the snow, or icy rain conditions. Just slow down, don't think yourself macho and overtake everyone cause you got 4WD etc... we will all overtake you once you're in the ditch.
The second car is the only car I've seen so far on these videos that has any defensive driving skills. Take a frickin' driving course and get your car properly maintained for the winter. Might keep you out of the ditch!
I'm excited about moving to Minnesota.. Judging from this video i'll need Triple A, and a Suv with AWD and brand new snow tires lol on my to do list! I'm very excited!!!
THE MOST DANGEROUS driving maneuver during the winter is simply... changing lanes, this happened to me once, i very slowly tried to change lanes, and being a fwd car i was driving, it didnt have a lot of rear weight, and the ass just slid out. DRIVE SLOW IN WINTER, 4X4 OR NOT!
Driving too fast for conditions will get ya every time. You can't disobey the laws of physics....a body in motion tends to stay in motion. Slow down people!

Each year, the same thing. You out there that winter tires do not sell? You are always ready for winter, which is sad because of your stupidity people are dying.
@KoivuTheHab Lol you sure as hell dont need an 4wd in these conditions. A normal FWD car will do fine in almost all conditions. The only time you really need a 4wd is up icy hills or in deep snow, none of which are present in this video.
@napalm9 You need to use your brain homse. If that car was 4WD it would never have spun like that. Also, sleet can be extremely slippery, this looks like a combination of sleet on ice underneath. It's exactly in conditions like this that 4WD will save you from your mistakes and bad judgement on the road.
@creamyfilling102 Actaully it does to an extent. For example in this case it more than likely would have kept the car on the road. Try it sometime, the difference between 2wd and 4wd in winter is like night and day...
@KoivuTheHab - Drive down a snowy highway any day in the US, 90% of the vehicles in the ditch are 4wd. 4wd doesn't help you slow down, or steer around anything. The car sitll has four tires, same amount of grip. 4wd drivetrain is pretty much irrelevent if you don't know how to use its advantages. These people would have crashed no matter what. A good set of snow tires and a winter driving course is plenty to keep most people on the road in the winter, too bad no one makes that investment.
@uswg01 I'm not talking about the US, americans don't know how to drive in winter conditions. Also I must say you know very little about cars and physics in general if you say things like ''doesn't help you steer around anything. The car sitll has four tires, same amount of grip'' If you think a 2WD has the same amount of grip as a 4WD I'm really not sure if I should ask you to see a doctor or a kindergarten teacher. Btw, a 'winter driving course' is always part of getting a license here...
@KoivuTheHab - Please explain how having 4wd magically allows an individual tire to posses more grip. Unless you are accelerating there is very little difference between the way a 4wd/2wd will handle on public roads, at reasonable speeds. 4wd will help you get out of a ditch, or up a steep hill, but it won't instantly make a car handle better, especially if there is no additional training for the driver. Tires and skill are much more important in my opinion.
@uswg01 There is no magic required, a tiny bit of knowledge of physics or common sense is more than enough. Everyone who has ever driven a car and gone through school knows that if a mass is being pulled by 4 elements it has more grip than 2 elements of this same type. This doesn't mean that the advantage is automatically double (200%) but it does automatically mean that there is more traction. 4WD does not help much when traction is already lost, however it's much less likely to lose traction.
@KoivuTheHab - I'm not disputing the fact that 4wd will accelerate better. When you go to brakes, and especially brake and turn... 4wd offers zero advantage, in fact at that point, 4wd can possibly be disadvantageous. Unless of course, you are familiar with the drivetrain characteristics of 4wd. I prefer my awd impreza, but had no problem driving my 2wd hatchback in weather and on roads where most people DIDN'T make it with their 4wd. IMHO Tires and Training makes a driver, not the vehicle.
@uswg01 There is no disputing tires and training are very importaint, I'm not challenging this fact either. However 4WD is not only an advantage when accelerating, for example when changing lanes on a surface like this, the back end is MUCH less likely to lose traction in the first place. I'm not going to debate if 4WD is more or less importaint than tires and training, as I have not stated an opinion on this in the first place. Also, 4WD can never be a disadvantage compared to 2WD.
was it me or did the second car, at first started fishtailing, he caught it, and then just went "that was fun" and continued to make it fishtail on purpose?
back in 2002 my small airplane from Salt Lake City to John Wayne airport in Orange County couldn't take off because of the Icy run way it just went around and when it stop the plane was facing the opposite direction LOL it wasn't funny though i was a little scared 20 min later the run was was clear
Lesson to take from this? Your FWD/RWD car, mini van, etc... ARE NOT 4X4's. Maybe leave the house earlier so you can take slower backroads instead of the iffy looking highway?
Good background noise, conservative talk radio, that's normally whats playing on mine.
@PtOs He has no idea how to recover a fish tail... It was just dumb luck. You never recover a fish tail by breaking, it only makes it worse... Autos suck in snow cuz you don't have engine breaking....
the driver just after first minute of the video was a really good one, you should notice he DID NOT use breaks after his car started fishtailing! Remember - breaks kill in such situation. FWD cars have to be stabilised with the throttle and here you have a great example! Hope it's a FWD ;) Cheers!
lol you need to forget about brakes, when you suddenly got sideways, everyone hits brakes and that causes them to loose control at alll and fly into ditch :D :D
The second car in the video, I thinks its an impala or malibu, was not a bad driver. Actually he handled that perfectly and got his/her car back under control. Most people hit the brakes when they start to spin, but this guy had it under control and steered back into the drift. Winter driving 101
For the driver of the red Camaro at 1:46. Next time I would ask for a ride home from somebody who has a car that isn't a rear wheel drive. In fact if I lived in Minnesota I wouldn't even own a sports car.
are the american roads the fucking slippest roads in the universe with a bunch of policemen constantly shooting to your tires (cause your imported them from mexico) or are american people so rubbish when driving that they all should have their licences taken away? i should quote @gasitman now: TAKE THE FUCKIN BUS!
Do not use a fcking brakes never on snow, just put in lower gear and put your foot out of clutch and if you need slow down more then again in lower gear and so on.In automatic transmission just use steering and not damn brakes
I hate the salt they put on the roads. true it melts the ice/snow but when that melted water freezes its gets very slippery. and salt on tires are not that fun either to drive on unsalted roads. i prefer warm sand. that melts and gets stuck in the ice and give more grip and controllobility and you wont have to be worried about rust on the car either
@kampfsack2009 salt fucks up cars pretty fast. we use it here in finland and cars turn out to rusty metal craps after couple of years... without damn good rust protections.
Good winter tyres (with spikes or not) is enought!
Mmmmmmm....no I dont think you should try to overtake that car and definately not in that speed...
Then you get a overdimentioned "water planing"....
Summertires are too soft, has too little grip and too small patterns in tires to control as you just saw here, so REMEMBER, IF IT IS SNOWING and you have SUMMER TIRES;
@kowal789 yeah cuz if you hit the breaks youll lock them up then just start sliding.. then its over.. best bet.. keep equal amount of pressure on the gas and just try to recorrect and connect.. but most people panic and slam the breaks lol
It looks like a Summer Tires Enthusiasths' Convention.
Anyway, hitting the brakes when you want to evade the slide is the worst thing you can do.
Another thing I have noticed is that too many drivers leave snow on bonnets and tops of their cars. In Europe if one gets busted by the police patrol with snow on their car, the penalty for something like this is quite expensive.
A simple new tool could prevent vehicles getting in trouble on ice. Just press the switch and you can get enough traction immediately. Snow tires and salting on ice can be an old story.
Fuckin impalas

Mmmmmmm....no I dont think you should try to overtake that car and definately not in that speed...
Then you get a overdimentioned "water planing"....
Summertires are too soft, has too little grip and too small patterns in tires to control as you just saw here, so REMEMBER, IF IT IS SNOWING and you have SUMMER TIRES;
LEAVE YOUR CAR AT HOME!!!!!!!!!

when you start to fishtail like at 1:01, do NOT hit the breaks. just try to steer out of it. there is no real way to make it short and painless.
kowal789 6 months ago
@kowal789 yeah cuz if you hit the breaks youll lock them up then just start sliding.. then its over.. best bet.. keep equal amount of pressure on the gas and just try to recorrect and connect.. but most people panic and slam the breaks lol

It looks like a Summer Tires Enthusiasths' Convention.
Anyway, hitting the brakes when you want to evade the slide is the worst thing you can do.
Another thing I have noticed is that too many drivers leave snow on bonnets and tops of their cars. In Europe if one gets busted by the police patrol with snow on their car, the penalty for something like this is quite expensive.

snow tires would def help

A simple new tool could prevent vehicles getting in trouble on ice. Just press the switch and you can get enough traction immediately. Snow tires and salting on ice can be an old story.

I've driven in Minnesota winters for years and it never ceases to amaze me how many other drivers are total idiots.
