yes, you are right! Michelangeli made a mistake! - but I think it is the only one during the perfomance. And the piece is not so easy. Nevertheless, it is remarkable due to michelangeli's extreme perfectionism.
@arturon111 I have copies of Debussy's manuscripts and can say that the B octave is not there! They are there in the previous sequence of measures, but not there.
@kdj24370 gieseking is better than michelangeli, has many colors, great sound (even if its an old recording) but lack of details. And debussy wrote TOO many detils on EACH prelude and sometimes on every note. Arrau plays this prelude EXCEPTIONALLY well, full of details power and clarity
@kdj24370 Ok, me too. Arraus version in my opinion is the overall BEST. Not michelangeli's, Arraus has the right Debussy sound different than any other sound Arrau obtains for any other composer.
@kdj24370 Ok, me too. Arraus version in my opinion is the overall BEST. Not michelangeli's, Arraus has the right Debussy sound different than any other sound Arrau obtains for any other composer. Plus is the only one that brings out the spirtitual side of Debussy's music
@arturon111 yes, here the legato and the sweeps sounds like real wind and the tremolos also the prasing, the eveness, the richness of the sound without being ever harsh.
You're absolutely right. If you know the music, you can tell that maybe 3 chords are missing, and you can also hear the large 'click' where the music was improperly edited together. What is with that?
do you guys know that debussy wrote his first book of preludes in 3 months? 12 pieces of incredible compositional depth in 3 months! amazing - the man was a genius. and this is an incredible performance, possibly my favourite prelude of them all.
But you have to remember, many composers spend years thinking what they want to write through, so the writing period is just jotting down whatever they had developed.
Same with writers. Ariel Dorfman wrote Death and the Maiden in a week or two, but he had the idea in mind for years...
stimmt, er war viel zu "cool", keine Dramatik im Ton. Insbesondere die Stelle mit der Umspielung der trillerartigen Figur - trocken im Klang und in der Emotion
Look how effortless the downward cascade of Bar 56-ish (3.10 in this video) is for Michelangeli. I'm 17 and practicing for Grade 8. I envy and admire this man, a determined and brilliant pianist.
He raped the piano.

Wow, deffinently the most harmonically complex of this triptych of preludes. LOVE the chromatic transtional passages! Gives me chills!

Pollini plays the instrument wonderfully, whereas Michelangeli plays the music wonderfully
Pollini is the athlete, Michelangeli the poet...

I think, at about 2:18 he plays the b in the bass, but unfortunetaly it's wrong
debussy left it out here

that b is correct, it is a pedal point
arturon111 2 years ago 4
@arturon111 Actually, that B is not in the score. While it IS a pedal point, Debussy leaves it out during the second time that theme comes around.

michelangeli's playing is quite leaden and mannered in places imho
pollini isn't the greatest debussy interpreter but he nails this particular prelude better than arturo

What happens around 3:39-3:40? Obviuosly, an entire bar has been cut out.
Good performance, btw. Yuori Egorov does quite good, too.
